You mean beets will give me excessive gas, too?

/Yeah, I did RTFA

This couldn't come at a worse time for beet farmers who are antipating the "Worst Beet sugar beet harvest in decades". "Liberals just don't serve beets as often," said one local. "Their kids rule the roost. There's more of an expectation that it has to "taste good". Heck, when I was growing up, people didn't care if something tasted good as long as it was good for you."

"What does Obama have against the American farmer?" he wondered.

TripSixes 2008-11-23 08:55:50 AM
I'm a liberal and I love beets. Not that I buy them, or eat them, but I love them.

I love how that guy thinks 'liberals' should be forced to eat beets because he farms them. Well, welcome to the free market pal. I'll take my arugula elsewhere.

Marcus Aurelius [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 08:56:49 AM
Pickled beets aren't that bad. You can actually choke them down.

Or, did you just pwn me notmtwain?

Atillathepun [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 09:18:25 AM
I hated beets as a kid. Nasty canned beets. Bleh. But then I found the joys of a perfectly roasted beet drizzled with a balsamic and olive oil vinaigrette. But beets fresh, roast them yourself and enjoy.

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 09:49:13 AM
I am completely in agreement with Obama on this issue. Beets should only be used as animal food, and then only if you really hate the animal.

As Atillathepun said, fresh beets roasted FTW.

Sadly, I don't have any, and didn't read this before I prepared my lunch, spinach and broccoli -- healthy stuff -- with spaghetti, Classico Alfredo sauce, and lotsa fresh-grated Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Nom nom nom.

Yup yup. Try some fresh and don't overcook the hell out of them, and they are pretty good. They are a laxative though that turns your shiat red though, heh.

This is why I voted for him. We both have the same anti-beets philosophy. Every once in a while I will try some beets to see if maybe my tastes have changed, but it takes one bite to remind me that I DO NOT, IN FACT, LIKE BEETS. Ok, Mom?

Washington, DC-
In a major policy speech today, President-Elect Obama characterized his stance on watermelon and grape soda as "Oh Lawdy"

Well, at least that's one thing I have in common with him. It's a thin strand, but something to work with.

I never got him to eat beets again.

FTA: usually begin their meals with tortilla soup and guacamole as starters

Proof the author knows what tortillas are, but not what tortilla soup is. And maybe not even that much.

FTFA: Obama does have a weakness for chips and salsa and tends to put hot sauce on everything. At Dooky Chase's Creole restaurant in New Orleans, he offended longtime owner Leah Chase by pouring hot sauce all over the gumbo she offered to fatten him up.

"I hope this isn't insulting," he said. Chase, sitting at his side, stared straight ahead.

Cooks need to be less self-absorbed. This just in: not everyone has the same taste as you. They have their own preferences, and it's asinine to think that someone should not season their food to fit their tastes just to avoid hurting your feelings.

In Australia, they like to put beets on their hamburgers.

This immediately poses the question, "Seriously, what the fark is wrong with Australians?"

I gave beets a try after watching an episode of Good Eats. Tasted like dirt.

Broccoli, on the other hand, are doubleplus yum so long as they're not cooked.

Cooking is just like making anything for public consumption (books, movies, art). You always want people to like it and it always sucks when someone doesn't.

Freak. Sugar beets aren't the beets you eat. :p

And the harvest was so humongous the sugar company paid farmers to plow their beets under! The sugar co. didn't have the capacity to handle the huge harvest.

/still has red beets in the garden. Yum.

I came to say this. Scared the hell out of me the first time i ate a 1/2 pound cheeseburger and came away with a purple face and t-shirt. What the hell can you expect from people who put vegemite on everything?
