Man, that was painful. From "Renegade" to this? I'm ashamed to call myself a product of the 80's.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 07:25:07 AM
I watched 30 seconds. I'd never seen it. I'm kind of glad I stopped watching MTV before it was released. Up through Paradise Theater -- very good. After that, Styx sucked but at least DeYoung and Shaw had some good solo music.

Sir Cumference the Flatulent [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 07:27:35 AM
Good God that was horrible..I also need to fire up "Renegade" as ear bleach.

No, I believe you were meaning to reference THIS Billy Squier video.

I had never spelled his name "Billy's Quier" before watching this.
If you've never seen it before, give it more than the first 30 seconds. It's mesmerizing.

msannomalley [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 08:57:15 AM
Yes, but it's still better than all the lame ass reality shows that make up MTV these days.

TripSixes: Almost as gay as THIS Billy Squier video. (new window)

The song is pretty gay. The video isn't as gay as the Styx video. If you want a gay Billy Squier video as a benchmark to measure 80's video gayness against, you should use this one instead. (new window).

However, there is nothing that compares to the lameness of this little cheese curd. Behold! The Power of 80's Video Cheese! (new window)

Styx is the worst popular rock band in American history. The only reason they're not the worst in all of North America is because the members of Rush also live on this continent.

The Styx Behind The Music is the best episode ever. Oh, sure, there's no stories of being clinically dead after an OD like in the Motley Crue episode, but it's better because it features Dennis DeYoung's pathological self-regard. He seems to truly believe that he is the transcendent musical genius of our time, and up there with Mozart and Bach all time.

And it all bottomed out with him forcing the band to do the full "Kilroy Was Here" production, featuring dialogue, costumes, and sets (yes, it was a full musical theatre production) at a Texas butt-rock festival in the '70s, headlined by Sammy Hagar. Yeah, musical theatre in front of 25,000 drunk Hagar fans in Texas doesn't work out too well.

Riche [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 12:05:57 PM
Wow, that video brings me back. Thanks, Subby.

That video was just some super cheesy fun. Without the video the song sucked.

Either way, it probably isn't fair to compare it to Styx's other work.

Hobodeluxe [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 12:21:04 PM
Queen of Spades,Blue Collar Man,Renegade,Come Sail Away these are the Styx songs that I remember. Anything before Paradise Theater.

Good farking god, that was AWFUL.

I'll take Renegade or Snowblind any time, though. Always preferred the Tommy Shaw songs, anyway.

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2008-11-23 12:34:53 PM
My stars, that's terrible. I'm grateful that I grew up at a time when Styx was no longer played on the radio. Yeesh.

My first concert ever was Styx for the "Paradise Theater" tour...I was 11 years old, and it was the greatest moment of my life up to that point.

"Music Time" = meh.

SUITE MADAM BLUE FTW!

MadSkillz 2008-11-23 01:51:17 PM
I saw Styx perform at The Gorge ampitheatre with Kansas as opening act. Was fun.

I was still a Styx fan at that point (I own all of their albums except the out of print stuff from Wooden Nickle Records)

Gangway Fathead 2008-11-23 01:54:25 PM
Funny, I lived though that and I don't remember when Styx decided to become a horrible, watered down Oingo Boingo knock off.

Somehow Boingo could have made that same song work, though.

Wasnt rock me tonight the video people cite that ended his career? Any popular music is gonna suck as time goes by.

But the guy who laid out troll bait equating styx to rush is just crazy.

Farkomatic 2008-11-23 03:31:18 PM
I hate to admit it, but I saw Styx with the guy who Tommy Shaw replaced. I thought they were mind-blowing - very tight with amazing vocals.

Dennis DeYoung is hard to take, but since he didn't dominate the band, Styx was OK for a while. Then "Babe" was a monster hit, DeYoung became the dictator, and Styx became a complete joke. What a cheese ass band.

I was very disturbed by the singer's free-balling in his own pants and the fact that he was wearing knee pads.

Before telling the youth of today to get off my lawn, and complaining that MTV doesn't play videos anymore like they did when I was a teen.....these are the videos I conveniently forget that they did show.

OMG I love Styx.

I have seen them like 7 times. And man this song is bad. The video is horrible...

Tommy Shaw shows up only at the end of this... the band had pretty much broken up by this time in 1984.

SardonicAvenger 2008-11-23 07:31:06 PM
I remember thinking this video was the bee's knees. In like, sixth grade.

Not surprisingly, a few years later I found David Lee Roth's "Yankee Rose" to be the height of artistic achievement.

/I have no shame.

Well... They went Dennis' way yes. He pushed for it, and nobody else had a better overall idea. He did inspire and plan a lot of their albums but they all worked together to bring each album a reality.

Kilroy Was Here ws 1983, so it's well past the 70's. The show was expensive and not too great (long videos and acting)

I saw Dennis live this year and I loved it. I honestly wish he were still with the band because their final album was Cyclorama and it was crap (I think Big Bang Theory was covers??) Anyway, Styx is great.

Kudos subby!

When STYX went insane it was a shock. I loved Grand Illusion with a passion, then Mr. Roboto showed up ... a true WTF moment. My second concert of all time was the Paradise Theater tour of STYX in ( undelievably ) Billings, Montana.

The best part of the Styx Behind The Music was hearing Tommy Shaw talk about playing at the Texas Jam during the Kilroy Was Here tour...

"We're going on after Ted Nugent, in front of 120,000 people, and playing dinner theater."

The Wooden Nickel stuff is out on a two disc set now. Interesting and good stuff from the early days. I recommended it.
