They build up a lot of tolerance, then they die in their 40s from liver failure. It makes for a productive economy.

Ideological collapse in the early nineties, financial collapse in the late nineties and the population in a death spiral, but a brief spike in oil prices and all of a sudden Russia thought they were the shiat again.

/What do they think their nukes are defending? Who would want to invade that garbage heap? They have nothing worth having except commodities, and those can now be bought cheaply.

Oil prices dive...

* savings help businesses in need
* savings allow businesses to translate lower prices to consumers
* economy is stimulated
* BONUS - pain in the ass nations suffer

I think I like this.

I'm not sure how much more of this stimulation we can take.

Actually the WSJ is a pretty good newspaper, just its editorial page is overflowing with crap and it sometimes spills onto the rest of the paper.

Prices fall, consumers delay major purchases, prices fall further, demand is reduced.
Production contracts, factories idle, business lay off workers.
They have no money, so demand is reduced, and prices fall further.

Rinse, repeat.

russia's loss is not our gain, jerkoffs. eventually we're gonna need them to balance off china. instead they might just ally with them instead of us. yes, they're not really a democracy. have you read a history book? russia isn't europe.

sad tag. when an economy collapses, sad tag. this is old people not getting enough food and civil engineers not being paid to go to work.

\and in case it comes up, Georgia struck first.

5_second_rule 2008-11-22 09:34:02 AM
I submitted a similar article only to point out that Russia is suffering as well as the rest of the world. Some quasi-economist suggested that we should let our economy fail like the Russians did al la late '80s and early '90s and emerge as this strong self substaining economy. Not looking good today and they have and HIV+ epidemic that may further cripple their economy.

//oil isn't enough

Why is it that all the tin-pot European dictators think invading Russia during the middle of winter is a good idea. Let's be honest, Russia is miles and miles of snow-covered fark all in the winter. Sending troops across that sounds like a great idea.

So I have been homebrewing for a while, and want to take the next step by building a still. I figure I can make vodak of equal quality cheaper than I would pay for Grey Goose. I know that there are legal issues, but as long as I am only making it for myself and not to sell for profit I figure I will probably be fine.

Anyone have any experience with this? I have not decided whether I will use a keg, brew kettle, or make my own boiler out of copper sheets. I already have a keg so I could do it that way for cheap, but I want something that will last and will look good too.

Do your research thoroughly and don't cheap out on anything. Unless, of course, you really enjoy blindness and liver/kidney failure.

Moonshining is illegal because people kill themselves and others when they make bad product.

It is harder to get methanol poisoning than you think. Beer and wine still have all the methanol in them and no one goes blind drinking them. The only way to really hurt yourself is to drink nothing but the heads, and even then you would need to drink alot. As long as you throw out the heads and don't use lead solder you should be fine. Even if you kept everything and just mixed it all together so the methanol was not concentrated in one jar you would have to drink enough that you would die of alcohol poisoning before you had anything happen from the methanol.

Not true, see the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791. Wikipedia (new window)

Moonshine is not illegal. Not paying taxes on said moonshine is. In fact, most states prohibit the sale of liquor and beer directly to the consumer to help ensure said taxes are paid.

Setting aside any illegality, you REALLY need to understand how to watch the still top (exit) temperature in order to lose the methanol that comes off first.

I'm sure there'll be instructions on the intertubes somewhere.

Making or possessing it is not illegal I don't think, but selling it is. Especially in a dry county which I believe was the premise in the show.
