Why do people think that guns need to be "registered"? This isn't the UK - with very few exceptions you don't have to register a gun anyplace in the country. Nor would most gun owners be willing to do so, even if "required" by some agency.

Klippoklondike 2008-11-21 02:06:28 PM
They also ask for every résumé or biographical statement you've ever used.

So, good luck getting a job with them if you've ever had a job?

They're trying to figure out what the odds are that you'll shoot someone in the face.

"Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage."

It's more of an "are you on record being a dumbass ?" kind of question, and it's a prudent question. Also, it's #59 of 63 similarly worded questions on a wide range of topics, not the #1 question on a three-question application, so let's keep some perspective here.

You need a license to own a dog - in case the dog ever bites someone the government can know if the person bitten is at risk of illness

You need to register your car - so if your car is stolen police can bring it back to you and if you run someone over in it they can try to find you.

You have to have a license to sell food on the street corner - because the government has a vested interest in prevent outbreaks of food bourne illness.

So why is it such a big deal to register a gun in case it gets stolen or used in a crime again?

Blues_X [TotalFark] 2008-11-21 02:29:51 PM
They just want to make sure that no appointees have ever Cheneyed anyone in the face.

Dog ownership and car ownership are not specifically enumerated rights in the Constitution. That said, I have no problem registering my firearms whatsoever.

Yeah. This is much more of an Obama CYA question than anything else.

Any applicants to his administration are going to be under a HUGE microscope - details about their lives are going to be under more scrutiny than any previous administration, and even the slightest impropriety (either real or imagined) will be blown up for the entire nation to see.

False, you only need to register your car if you are going to use it on public roads. You can can have as many cars as you like without registering them as long as they aren't driven on public roads.

Every car by law is required to have a VIN number regardless of whether it is driven on the road or not. The VIN is on your Pink slip and it's what proves you own the damn thing.

Or parked where anyone can see them. If you have a car with no/lapsed registration sticker in your driveway, visible from the street/sidewalk you can get ticketed if a cop has nothing better to do.

Yes. [rather long list of registration numbers]. No. I hunt and they've killed a fair number of lesser creatures. All were consumed. Most were not human.

NuttierThanEver: So why is it such a big deal to register a gun in case it gets stolen or used in a crime again?

The theory, if I understand my redneck relatives goes thus: "If I register my gun, the government will have me on a list which would be used to round up resistance when the New World Order occurs." (Oh yeah, that's still around). In their minds, gun ownership equates with the ability to resist tyranny.

And 200 years ago, when there was a parity with the Brown Bess over the mantel with the Brown Bess carried by Federal Troops, it was correct. When I point out to my rabid 2nd Amendment relative that their rifles, shotguns and pistol will do Jack and shiat against the attack helicopters, armored personnel carriers and high capacity, long ranged automatic weapons used by this supposed authoritarian regime their eyes glaze over and they return to watching Nascar.

Moral: Arguing reality with retards is, in itself, retarded.

I think that's the real problem. Most people just don't want to have to go through all their weapons. That and they might have one that will soon be considered restricted and they don't want to give it up.

Not required in Texas. There is a paper trail on the 4 that I bought(background checks) and on the ones dad bought new.

So no registered guns, but nice choice in FN, love my PS90.

Every gun has a serial number. My point still stands, you only have to resister your car if you are going to use it on public streets. You don't have to have a pink slip to a car either, my uncle buys junked cars and other vehicles where there is no title/pink slip.

serpent_sky: Or parked where anyone can see them. If you have a car with no/lapsed registration sticker in your driveway, visible from the street/sidewalk you can get ticketed if a cop has nothing better to do.

I don't leave my guns in the front yard and my uncle keeps his junked cars in the back.

Because those lists have been used to seize weapons that were one legal and were later banned. It happened in New York, California, England, and Australia. (Probably more I can't think of.)

It is not paranoid, it has happened many times in the past.

You only need the pink slip/title when you go to register your car. If you only drive it on private property, you don't need registration, insurance or a driver's license. However, if you ever intend to drive it on a public road, you'll need the car registered and insured and the driver needs to be licensed.

Yes, because being a law-abiding citizen owning a firearm is turrrble.
