KISS sucks.

That being said, if Madonna and other non-rock garbage acts are in there, I don't know why KISS isn't in the Pop Music Hall of Fame either.

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2008-11-21 01:39:32 PM

Oh wait, that can't be a reason, Madonna is in.

\\ I will not godwin this thread

I've never been a Kiss fan, but the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame does seem to induct some strange folks now and again. Rod Stewart and the Kinks made it...

Harvey Birdman 2008-11-21 01:41:10 PM
couldn't be "because they suck" could it?

They arent in the already because Gene Simmons is probably charging the Hall to use KISS' likenesses. That arrogant twat....

SpinStopper [TotalFark] 2008-11-21 01:44:53 PM
Maybe because Gene Simmons is a pompous douchebag with delusions of grandeur? Just a thought ;)

I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the fact that they ripped off the New York Dolls, but made it safe for 10-year-old suburban boys?

Sure, and they deserve to get in based on that album alone, but just saying being a douche can't preclude entry to that group.

I mean they let in Neal Young.

Mr. Coffee Nerves [TotalFark] 2008-11-21 02:09:16 PM
Having been to the Hall a few times and having watched the inductees video far too many times, at least half of the acts -- especially the one-hit-wonders from the 50's -- need to be booted out.

GreenAdder [TotalFark] 2008-11-21 02:09:23 PM
KISS doesn't play rock and roll. All of their songs are actually just pop songs. But since they wear funny outfits and makeup, and since they have explosions and pyrotechnics on stage, a lot of tweens were convinced that they were actually "metal." Shockingly, they started believing this yourselves after a while.

Then again, the Bee Gees are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as is Madonna. So, yeah. KISS should fit right in.

I am thinking as musical artists, the Bee Gees are surpassed by very few. Not a big Bee Gees fan and probably prefer KISS even, but please. Comparing the two is like saying...

Well Joe Montana got in...so why not Jeff Garcia.

If you guys can't recognize the sophisticated songwriting genius that was "Christine Sixteen" and "Calling Dr. Love", then I can't help you. Those anthems spoke powerfully and gave direction to an entirely new generation, as Dylan did before them.

I suspect that at the heart of the matter is that KISS made it possible for people to take a bunch of idiots prancing around in stupid makup and clothes to be taken seriously. Movies, comic books, toys, etc, all based on giant platform shoes and forgettable songs.

This provided the environment that led to glam rock, hair metal, and eventually people like the Insane Clown Posse. That's what the Hall is punishing them for.

Think about it. If you were around in the 80's, I'm sure you thought to yourself, "Well, those guys have hair that displace at least a cubic meter, wear eye shadow and lipstick, are wearing skin-tight spandex whilst jumping around like idiots. Why do I accept them? Oh, well, at least they aren't painted like cats. Cinderella rocks!"

What would it be like without them? Would hair metal have been laughed away? Think about what it would mean to base your act on shock value and not have KISS as a model-- Marilyn Manson could not have gained popularity by dressing like a moron. Rather, following the tradition of shock value through self-mutilation instead of costuming started by Iggy Pop, the entire band would have had to run themselves through with pikes to get any attention.

So without KISS 80's bands would have had to look like human beings, the Insane Clown Posse would be off bagging groceries somewhere, and people like Marilyn Manson would have long since offed themselves to sell more albums. Even more importantly, we would not have had to listen to "Rock and Roll all Night" or whatever it's called every half an hour on every rock station every year since the mid 90's. I hate that stupid farking song, and have probably heard it more times than I've heard myself belch.

A KISS-less world would be a beautiful world, and seeing that is why the Hall does not admit them.

Also, they suck.

Look, I don't know how old you are, but Appetite for Destruction was important in so many different ways. Even if you don't like them, you'd be displaying some serious cognitive dissonance to imply that record wasn't amazing in it's own right.

Once again, you're giving too much credit to KISS. This is the exact kind of thing that Gene Simmons goes on about. He loves to say how many things he's "invented." Now let's all just back out of this thread. If we ignore Gene, he'll go away.

I remember the day when I first heard them. My mind was blown. All I could think was "how do these guys know me so well? I DO want to rock n' roll all night AND party everyday!!! They must be the most profound musicians since Dylan!" Sensing this overwhelming excitement and the damage that might come of it, my mom started jiggling her car keys at me so that I would roll around on the floor trying to get them until I was too tired to break anything.

This.

You don't have to like every band out there. You may hate KISS but the fact that everyone knows who they are and what they did means that they have a place in music history. Every single band/artist out there has people who hate them and people who love them, that's just the way it is.

Like it or not Kiss was huge and they still sell albums and concert tickets today.

True, true. I was pointing out their negative influence, and perhaps exaggerating a bit for the sake of my point.

I'm sure that's also one of the reasons that the Hall isn't letting them in-- Gene Simmons is an enormous tool whose ego is so vast that is has created a universe all unto itself.

Had to work. Lunchtime was a good place to get in. I can't believe the number of KISS threads lately, what the hell is going on?

Believe it or not, I am a "to each his own" kind of guy and do understand the subjective nature of music taste, but I just can't find anything interesting about these guys beyond their makeup and pyrotechnics schtick. So many other bands from their era provide the testosterone driven rock their fans seem to love but do so with really amazing songwriting and profound lyrics. It's a phenomenon that has always escaped me.

jchic: Like it or not Kiss was huge and they still sell albums and concert tickets today.

Speaking to an audience of primarily concert promoters, venue officials and booking agents, Simmons warned those in the live entertainment industry that it wouldn't be wise to lower concert ticket prices. "Don't do that, you're training an entire generation of people to pay less for something and then more for something else," he said. "They won't know what the value is and they'd rather pay less every time."

Bee Gees = "Soft Rock"

Which in the end is still Rock. Not all Rock is loud and hard hitting stuff.
