If the GOP does adapt and change, will it be known as evolution by means of national election?

I think the death of GOP will be due to intelligent design. The intelligent people have deserted the party in droves.

Democrats have clearly become the party for moderate voters.

This, at least on the national level. I tend to vote Republican in local elections as those politicians are generally for less taxes, less government, don't care what goes on in the bedroom. Of course, since this is NJ, they'd be democrats in most of the country.

The funny thing about NJ though is that when a GOP candidate runs for state office (governor or senate) they still feel they have to suck up to social conservatives, even though they make up a really small minority. Worse, the sucking up comes back to haunt them in the general election when the moderates remember and vote democrat.

The current GOP strategy reminds me of someone convinced that tying cinder blocks to his feet will make him swim faster. With every failure, the cry is "Clearly I just need MORE cinder blocks!"

There have been a lot of suggestions that the Republicans should become Democrats in order to win. I thought they did that by nominating former media-darling centrist McCain. Didn't work.

The pendulum has swung, but it will swing back again.

The reason for this is because the Democrats will end up overreaching and getting arrogant just like the Republicans did. They will piss off their own base. They will get cowardly and not want to rock the boat. They will continue to work for the lobbyists. All of them do this. They are politicians. They will end up being hated and their own will ultimately chew them up.

When Gingrich was there, we heard that the Democratic Party was done. That they were "swept away". It is a cycle of theft that has continued for a long time. Republicans will be back to steal again when people are tired of the Democrats stealing. Its the way it is.

This. The same sort of silliness was said about Democrats. Ultimately, the republican party will not die so long as Christian Fundamentalist, backwaters anti-intellectual hicks, and the exorbitantly wealthy want a party to cater to their interests and the republicans continue to do the catering.

IMO the ideals of the GOP are the shiats but if I were to make a bet I'd say after 4 years of democratic rule people will be fed up and a swing back to republicans will happen.

And what's the first thing you read right after the column?

Trust me, the only reason the Republicans did not win this time was because they allowed the "middle of the road" gang in the party and had no strong candidate for President. John McCain is a fine man, but not Presidential. They will return to their conservative roots where they belong and after 4 years of having a socialist president, the country will have had enough.

A large section of the right-wing base just does not want to hear the message that they are responsible. It's amazing how insular the politics of character assassination have made them. They have convinced themselves they can do no wrong.

Until the GOP realizes that being a conservative also means being a fiscal conservative, they will continue to lose votes to the Blue Dog Democrats...and maybe the Libertarians (if that party can get its act together.)

Meh, just kidding. I know that won't happen.

FTA: Change is hard for conservatives, for obvious definitional reasons. But the truth is, in the kill-or-be-killed world of politics, those who don't evolve - becoming stronger and leaner - die.

So far Republicans are resisting such heresy. Evolution is just a theory, after all.

Every political party evolves over time. The Democratic party of today is not the party of 2004. The Republican party of today is not the party of 1994.

And the evolution isn't just policy ideas. It's the people. Time for a new generation of GOPers to get out there and revitalize the party. We don't need the same old faces.

The party isn't dead, and it's not dying. At this point, there's nowhere to go but up. We're in the same place today the Democrats were in back in 2004.

Honestly, in terms of national politics, I think the Republicans are in an entirely different class than the Democrats when it comes to blaming the opposition.

As soon as they fark up and give us a reason to. As we all know, while the form of treachery varies slightly from case to case, conservatives always manage to take the position that most undermines American security.

We need to execute people like Ann Coulter in order to physically intimidate conservatives, by making them realize that they can be killed too. Otherwise they will turn out to be outright traitors.

That's a bit of wishful thinking, I think. The Democrats weren't nearly as fractured in 2004 as the Republicans are now.

Not to say the Republicans are "dead", but there are some serious problems. I don't remember seeing this level of infighting among Democrats post-2004.

Like pirates taking over a big ship, the insanely religious Christian wing nuts highjacked the GOP and it has been going down the tubes ever since. It was supposed to be about strong security and defense, low taxes, independence, self governance and self responsibility, equality, freedom and independence to pursue happiness causing capitalism to flourish for all.

Now, thanks to the wing nuts, it is all about taking away your rights, controlling women and their bodies, scape goating Mexicans for all of society's ills, supressing alternative lifestyles (gays in particular) that they interpret are not allowed per the Christian bible, and fighting in a war they believe is dictated to them in, your guessed it, the bible.

The GOP is no longer the GOP. It is a shame.

lousydney 2008-11-21 09:39:21 AM
liam76And the Democratic party won't die so long as god hating secularists, flaming anti-straight gay agenda-ists, and welfare mothers want a party to cater to their interests and the democrats continue to do the catering.
But this year the democrats didn't pander to those factions. Obama emphasised his christianity, working middle class, and did not say word one about gay rights (and came back to bite the gays in california) Meanwhile Biden reached out to the blue collar votes and reassured people on gun rights, and even hillary campaigned hard in the appalachias. The dems worked to spread their tent as wide as possible, meanwhile the republicans where disparaging entire regions as anti-american, defined "true america" as a place that the least amount of people lived. McCain complete flipped on his values concerning religion to lock into a vote that was going to vote R anyway, and turned off a lot of moderate christians in the process. Theres a stark difference in how the Republicans handled their base versus the dems this year.

I wonder if the Republicans have driven away most intelligent young people, though. Those new faces you are hoping for might just be nothing but slack-jawed mouth-breathing College Republican types that slurped up every minute of the Bush administration with glee.

All I'm saying is, If you are counting on the youth of the GOP to save the party, don't hold your breath.

You can ignore most of the article because here is the point that matters:

Demographics can become destiny and you're losing badly with key groups like young voters, Asians and Latinos.

This is why, IMO the Democrats are poised to become a permanent majority for a generation or more. If they can retain power, not screw up too badly, until about 2020, the demographic shift of Latinos and other minorities in the country will automatically give them wins from there on out.

The GOP can become either a party of moderates or a party of fundamentalists, but it won't matter. They will still lose as the Latinos will become block voters for the Democrats like black voters.
