I watched an episode last weekend with Lita ford, actually quite a good show and enjoyed it.

There was a time when Rush could have been considered metal... like Deep Purple was metal. That time is long gone. They have admitted to being heavily influenced by Cream and Blue Cheer, which were metal in their day.

I thought it was okay, but felt a bit scripted. They need to work on feeling a little more lively and natural and fresh. It also wouldn't hurt to have more music as a part of the show, like in the background and clips and such.

Wait a sec. I recognize that voice! Is this Dennis De Young, lead singer from Styx? Come clean, man.

Caller: "Yeah, yeah, it's me. It's Dennis."

Dennis, you jealous douche, how about I crank a little 'Detroit Rock City' and play 'Come Sail Away' and we can see how they stack up side by side? Huh? You want that, you high-voiced bastard? We'll be right back, after this.

Everyone likes to lump older "heavy metal" with modern bands. That is stupid.

It's all subjective; one man's metal is another man's ABBA.

assegai: I thought "heavy metal" died 20 years ago.

Actually, 20 years ago heavy metal was huge. From the mid-80s to the early-90s, heavy metal was the most popular music on the planet. Then grunge rock and gangsta rap came along and pushed heavy metal into the background, but they did not completely kill metal off. This is because metalheads are some of the most fanatically loyal music fans on the planet. Even when metal is all but forgotten by the mainstream, metalheads will still buy metal albums and attend metal concerts in droves.

In recent years, metal has been making its way back to the mainstream. New bands like Wolfmother, Dragonforce, and Mastodon have been selling a lot of albums. While classic metal acts like Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and Metallica have been releasing new albums after years on hiatus (even Slayer is working on a new album).

Part of metal's recent resurgence in popularity can be credited to games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, which have exposed today's youth to hard rock and heavy metal from the 70s, 80s, and 90s and shown them that there's more music out there than just hip-hop and whiny emo.

I remember that some farker once commented that there are only three forms of popular music that have never completely died out since their inception: country, R&B, and heavy metal. It's true, too. Heavy metal has never completely dropped off the radar since its birth, and metal now has more sub-genres than any other type of music.

i think, more accurately, alternative and hip hop killed hair metal. Granted, I would argue that bands like Nickelback are more or less hair metal post-grunge, but you have to admit the popularity of hair metal came to a near grinding halt when Nevermind and Ten hit.

I also think metal is getting a bit of resurgence due to metal getting a bit more interesting to otherwise non-metal fans. I'll probably never buy a Judas Priest album, but I listen to plenty of Boris, Godflesh, Isis, etc. albums.

In the true sense of the music, Rush is metal.

Many people are image oriented. So, they think you have to dress up in a Halloween outfit, and growl lyrics about being evil, to be metal.

Thrash killed hair metal. Why spend more on hair care than tickets when what you really want to hear is fast'n'heavy music?

I love Thomas Haake. I have no idea how hard it must be to play in one particular time signature when the rest of the band are playing in (at least one) other time signatures.

If you want to see this metal god go completely off the chain, watch this video (new window) This is not a rickroll. This is the most brilliant video ever.

That is a rather flawed list. Martin Popoff made that list, and while I admire much of his writing, that list had too many mistakes on it to lend itself credibility. I never understood why Sam Dunn used that list, weakest part of his film right there.

I would like to think metal and hard rock will have more of a resurgence because people are tired of listening to the crap that's foisted on us now.
I understand the emotional content of rap and hip-hop (i think!?!?)
but how much musical talent does it take to have an engineer press the play button on a drum machine so you can talk over it?
That does not qualify as music to me.
But then again, one man's garbage is another man's gold.

Maybe popular culture will relearn how to enjoy music made by actual musicians.
Nah, probably not.

Cream is metal now? Uriah Heep? What's next?

The term "heavy metal" has evolved considerably over the years. I have a compilation album from the early '70s that's something along the line of "heavy metal hits" and it has everything from The Grateful Dead to T. Rex to Cream & Uriah Heep. I also remember seeing a friend's parents' 8-track with a similar theme and similar artists. That family tree does plot out how the term has evolved and changed along with the music, i.e. yesterday's heavy metal is today's hard rock is tomorrow's classic rock, etc.

Oh, and as for the "Is Rush metal?" question....I've noticed that anyone who's not into much metal will say so, but those that are don't. Same goes for prog. Hardcore prog fans won't claim them, but everyone else will usually lump them in. Also, see above. In the mid-70s Rush probably would've been considered metal, today not so much.

/It's all just music

I am a pretty big Rush fan, and while I own all their records, see them every time I can, and have a lame song reference in my username, I wouldn't say I worship them. I have a Rush-related RSS feed on my Google Reader just to see what's going on with the band, and it's pretty clear they will only be touring one more time, in 2011, since they don't want to hit the road past the age of 60. Kudos to them, in my opinion. But I have to say that some of the desolate comments left by fans made me laugh my ass off.

Rush is not metal, they're a hard rock band. I can't really think of one song of theirs that I'd consider to be a metal song, certainly nothing past Caress of Steel--"Bastille Day" is kind of like an Iron Maiden song, if only due to its historical lyrics, hehe.
