They must have hired a new bass player

Sharch [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 04:02:28 PM
Well, I'm looking forward to the album. And the tour.

The band always talks up every one of their albums. And if they set out to reinvent rock 'n roll, and come up sort with just a really good album, then I'm happy.

timujin [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 04:08:44 PM
Unless it's different from anything they've released in the last 21 years, they've "reinvented" rock 'n' roll as a bag of suck.

Uchiha_Cycliste [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 04:13:18 PM
We now call it 'Suck'n pole.'
We expect you to bend over to pay for it too, it's really a full body experience.

Watchman [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 04:13:46 PM
I like Daniel Lanois. There. I said it.

Damn it, I liked guitars.

true. every album has been "we've found a brand new sound", and it was true up until 2004's "Atomic Bomb" was essentially "All that You Can't Leave Behind v2.0", or as I call each album, "How to Dismantle All the Atomic Bombs You Cant' Leave Behind".

and dammit, for a band that waits 4 years between albums, would more than 10 songs and 43 minutes of "album" be too much to ask?

I love U2 but they frustrate me sometimes.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 05:12:12 PM
When has U2 ever been considered "rock n roll"?

STRYPERSWINE 2008-11-17 05:40:35 PM
Let me know when they master regular rock & roll. All that time spent with the blues guys.....wasted.

swahnhennessy 2008-11-17 05:40:58 PM
I like U2 and I like Daniel Lanois, but that's just hype.

FunkOut [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 05:44:11 PM
I'm sorry, but Bono has too much of the creepy old man vibe going on now. I can't handle that on top of the earnest crusading musician persona, the jaded rocker with cool glasses mask and the Irishman talking out his arse syndrome.

irockalot 2008-11-17 05:44:20 PM
Would he go as far as to say it sounds "Edge-y"?

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 05:49:50 PM
Turned it into a steaming pile?

Yeah, them and Creed.

Hey, is this one of those Fark U2 threads where we all pile on and bash the band and whine about everything since Joshua Tree being tripe?

In other words, EVERY Fark U2 thread.

They make great music. They have held up well. They're more popular than your favorite band.

And it's killing you.

the dizzle 2008-11-17 06:04:33 PM
Like their last album reinvented counting?

Glenechocreek 2008-11-17 06:09:54 PM
U-2? You mean, they made an album after Joshua Tree?

chevydeuce 2008-11-17 06:11:30 PM
The band I like is so cool, they haven't even been formed yet, but as soon as you hear it, they'll suck, as I'll have moved on to something even cooler and more obscure than anything ever invented...

douchebags, the lot of you....

/seen U2 three times, and I'll go see them again....and again
//well said Disgruntled Goat

Sherjo311 2008-11-17 06:11:49 PM
never understood what made people like these guys sooo much... bono has a good voice and that's about as far as the talent pool goes... too bad a polished turd is still a turd

Yeah...and some shameless fanboy comes in and says "Bono? Yeah, I'd do him."

I guess you're right.

a turd that weighs over 80 Courics.

Montrose 2008-11-17 06:19:06 PM
Well, a more (hopefully) realistic version of this quote says that U2 are in the process of recapturing the shift that took them from The Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby.

So what to expect isn't a reinvention of Rock, but hopefully a re-imaging of the band's sound that results in a collection of novel work.

If Bono was hyping the album, I expect hyperbole. When it's Eno and Lanois, considering their other collaborations, I tend to have more faith that the hype and my expectations will more or less align.

EvilElecBlanket [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 06:19:37 PM
After this many years, and the number of albums they've sold, resorting to hype like this just cheapens the band.

You have your fans, and they will be buying your album as soon as it's released.

/can't wait to download it
/legally

meteorite 2008-11-17 06:19:47 PM
Hey, I'll be happy to go see them again next year if/when they tour!!! It'll be my fifth show. Granted, I doubt it'll be as good as Popmart was but not quite as good U2 still means way better than everything else.

Robert1966 [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 06:20:00 PM
Yeah, U2 must really suck to still be doing it succesfully and freshly after all these years. And that guy who co-wrote all those classic songs? Just a good voice and nothing more.

/Though Lanois is over-hyping this one. At best it will be a reinvention of U2, which should be worth looking into.

bigbadideasinaction 2008-11-17 06:21:39 PM
Lanois does some pretty awesome stuff, but I'll beleive it when I hear it.

TheDaymoose 2008-11-17 06:23:37 PM
Never liked U2, but I highly doubt they'll be putting out anything I haven't heard before.

I'll be ready to eat my shoe just in case.

For me, not since this Link (new window)

I still like them, but I miss this U2

Son of Thunder 2008-11-17 06:54:59 PM
I believe, well, rock 'n' roll has been reinvented one more time.

Henceforth, "rock 'n' roll" will be known as "Kevin."

/so let it be written
//so let it be done

I dunno, most of my favorite bands aren't popular, so I'm not sure how that's "killing me."

/loves death metal

Weisenheimer 2008-11-17 07:10:06 PM
Those are the guys who ape Coldplay's sound, right?

DontBeSoDigital 2008-11-17 07:19:30 PM
I'm looking forward to this.

I haven't fully liked a U2 album since Achtung Baby. I hope they can blow me away on this. They showed glimpses of greatness on the last two records but they were not consistent enough for me.

/adores "Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own" though

priestrape 2008-11-17 07:20:22 PM
the ratio of U2's quality versus the amount of hate they generate is way out of whack. I'm not a huge fan, particularly of their recent albums, but they're largely a damn fine band with more than their fair share of iconic, truly great songs. And that Bono guy does a shiatload for charity, which is kinda nice, considering that most would gladly sit around and count their money all day.

So what's the hate all about? Overexposure?

GonzoNihilist 2008-11-17 07:26:14 PM
Between Daniel Lanois and Bob Ezra is their anything Canadian producers can't do for European/GB bands?

Hype is still hype, regardless of the source.

I still like 'Achtung, Baby', though...

Dear Bono,

STFU about Africa and make another Joshua Tree.

Thanks,

The Management.

fark all y'all...you are either

1) a basement dwelling farktard who only likes shiat like Ween or Coldplay (who "borrowed" U2's style and sound)
2) a jealous, petty individual who is upset that U2 gets all the ladies
3) a person with no sense of harmony or spiritual experience through music
4) someone who has never seen U2 live
5) soul-less
6) all of the above

/fark yes I'd hit it
//from behind, forward, and every possible position
///with The Edge
////with Larry Mullen Jr.
//Adam Clayton can come too!

STRYPERSWINE: Well played sir, well played... 80 courics, just lovely.

Zooropa is my least favorite album, but even that album had some good stuff.

I don't understand the hate thrown at Bono, the guy has talent, passion for more than what pays his bills and is willing to work his arse off to help those less fortunate. Add on top of that, he isn't a douche about promoting his charities. Many "famous" people could learn a thing or three from Bono and how he promotes his causes.

Mateorocks 2008-11-17 07:52:46 PM
I don't get the hate either...U2 is an all-time great band. Like The Who, each member plays their instruments to maximum effect and it usually works. Not every song is good, but every album has something fresh.

If you want to hear the same noise over and over again, go buy the new AC/DC album.
