12. You bought it off of someone's coat, out of the back of someone's truck, or from an email whose subject line began "LQQK R0L3X!!"

Also, I've been told that Rolexes don't tick off the seconds, they have a smooth-movement second hand.

My dad bought one in China, knew it was fake and bought it just to say he did. He, in fact, searched for someone to buy it from. When he got home, he took it to a jeweler friend who said it's a REALLY good fake. The second hand sweeps like a Rolex, and the fake even has the name on the side of the crystal that sticks up. The jeweler wished Dad had brought one for him. The jeweler's dad had a real one that was the same design as my dad's, and Dad said that side by side it was pretty impressive. He's been wearing it. He paid $17 for it! He also happily tells anyone who asks that it's a fake. We were kind of hoping it was going to be a comical fake, like it had two Ls or something. It's ended up being a pretty funny story that keeps on going.

Incidentally, how much does the real thing cost? $1000? More than that?

Yeah, I thought that was the dead giveaway--is that what the "quartz movement" in reason #9 is?

I was approached by a guy as I was leaving the gym. He offered to sell me a "real" Rolex Submariner for $100. He gave me the whole sales pitch and had concocted a cry me a river story on why he was selling it. I was impressed by how well the so called real Rolex looked. So I offered him $50 and he sold it to me. Make a long story short, a few years later I found out my fake Rolex was indeed a real Submariner. Hotter than hell. So I bought what I thought was a fake watch from a guy who probably just got done sawing somebodies arm off for it.

$5,000 - $6,000 is a pretty good average for their starter models.

Why would someone want to walk around wearing $5-6k on their wrist?

I had a Canal Street one. First, the gold rubbed off, then the hands fell off.

I think I'll go for the Casio and save the rest for hookers and blow. Hell, maybe I'll get the Timex and pick up one more hooker.

I bought one at a flea market in Oradea, Romania for about 50,000 lei (about $1.60 at the time).

My first second clue that it was fake came when I examined the miniature hands for date, moon phases, etc... And found that they were glued on. And one of them was significantly off the center point.

*shrug* At least they spelled Rolecks right.

Having sold these fake POS on the street 20 years ago when I needed a job in college, the second hands on the real ones sweep and on the fakes, they tick. That and the real ones don't turn your wrist green.

It ran, and kept pretty good time, though.

I know mine is fake cuz I wanted one, still have it 20 yrs later and it still works.

I dont wear it much for the simple fact of the type of women that are impressed by it.

With a rolex on your wrist, you no longer need pron to fap. Your own ego turns you on.

My personal ogle-over-the-internet watch: The Old Vianney Halter "Antiqua"

I had a knock off when I was in my teens. It was a good watch, said Rolex, not Bolex or anything. It looked good and worked great, waterproof and everything. My mom still has it attached to her beachbag to watch the time.

/the only problem was the second hand ticked, not rolled

I have a friend who used his not to get arrested. Real Rolexes have their uses . . . one simply has to be creative.

Fake Rolexes are easy to spot. The weight is wrong, it's battery powered, the strap looks cheap and generally the whole finish is shoddy. You'd have to be blind not to be able to tell a real from a fake.

I don't understand why someone would spend thousands of dollars on a watch. I own this one, it's the most expensive watch I've ever owned at $400. It's waterproof to 600', accurate as hell, and light as a feather (titanium band and case). The appeal of several thousand dollars on your wrist never made much sense to me, if you can get the same thing for %10 of the price from a legit company.

Flogster 2008-11-16 06:43:16 PM
I was under the impression that the easiest way to spot a fake rolex was with the second hand. Most watches have a 'ticking' second hand while a Rolex second hand moves smooth.

Eh. Because the guy got bored? Hell if I know. Those are still awesome watches though. He doesn't ship them overseas, which sucks.

A good fax will cost you between 1500 and 3000. At that price you are buying the same watch just made in Japan.

If you think that's pricey, try a Philip Patek.

Actually the crystal on a real Rolex is synthetic sapphire.

I wanted a real bad Rolex knock-off. One that had it misspelled, but all he ones I found were fakes that attempted to look too good. What was the fun in that.
