I remember picking up a circle mini-pizza once to have the inside fall out on me. The dough was still that raw.

Oddly enough, we liked the cookies partly raw.

mmmm.... school-sanctioned cookie dough.

My mom packed our lunches all but a couple of days we ran out of bread and she panicked, so it was a rare treat.

I use the word "treat" loosely.

There was a National Geographic article once that compared school lunches in different countries... damn, I wished I grew up in Japan when I read that...

School lunched were practically inedible through my entire K-12 experience. Yet, dorm food was absolutely fantastic. I never really understood why school lunches were so awful in an era dominated by the meat and dairy industries.

Look at it this way, from the programs I've watched on TV, usually sponsored by some news crew begging for ratings, the majority of the restaurants you go to eat are filthier than the city dump.

It cracked me up when the crew showed up at a roach infested place the day after it was sprayed -- and triumphantly found a few live roaches. Those were German roaches, which are about the hardest ones to kill and short of burning the place down, not all of them will fall over in 24 hours after a spray. Of course, no one bothered to explain that.

You can't have a sterile kitchen in a restaurant. It's impossible and even trying to get close to it can be hideously expensive. Aside from the obvious stuff, like crews not properly washing their hands, dropping and picking up food, sneezing in the salad, coughing all over the rolls, leaving defrosting meat by the fly infested trash at the back door, some things are just going to happen.

After all, these kitchens, unlike your own, have to handle a major amount of orders in a limited amount of time.

I used to occasionally deliver to a small factory when I was a courier. Actually, they rented the entire kitchen of an old, unused hospital and churned out takeout meals by the hundreds. It always smelled delicious in there, but the production lines were mainly staffed by workers and not automatic machines and the floors were not exactly all that clean. The huge pots and pans they used must have been a biatch to clean. Since gravy was ladled out by hand, I'm quite sure drippage was a problem by the end of the day.

Still, I'd have eaten the food.

Even meticulously cleaning up after the run is going to leave enough little traces of food for roaches and ants. Florida is about 50% roaches anyhow, of almost all varieties. (People used to buy special poisons to put in their house paint for use in interior rooms to kill bugs after they were painted. They still had to call in exterminators.)

You pay some guy $6.00 an hour to mop and clean up after closing and he's not going to change the dirty water in his bucket too often or use too much of the antibacterial floor soap -- which his boss has to pay for.

Now, there is absolutely no excuse for some kitchen food handler to not wash after using the can or scratching their arse and balls and then fingering someone's food. Nor is there any excuse for them to swing a mop and clean up and then not wash before going back on the line.

However, people are people. Most kitchen crews make minimum wage. Most don't like working in hot, cramped places. They're going to slack off. If you pay them better, then you're going to have to increase the price of the food, which is going to pi$$ off the customers and you'll loose business.

Sometimes, it's best not to know too much about the food industry, unless you're in it.

OscarTamerz 2008-11-16 09:41:34 PM
The FDA's recommended ratio of licensed food inspectors to restaurants and other establishments serving food is one per 150. Utah's most current ratio for 2007, according to the State Health Department, is one licensed food inspector per 231.
"It's one of those balancing acts," Larsen said. "We think of all we could do given more money, but we always end up prioritizing."

After all, which is more important saving money for the bureaucrat's salaries which are double the private sector or keeping people healthy? The only good restaurant in Salt Lake is The Cheesecake Factory and it's jammed from opening to closing despite the fact that it's over at the shopping mall on I-15 and 215.

So, so true. All my jobs through high school and college were food-industry-related, and though I have no actual horror stories per se, plenty of stuff went on "in the back" that your average lady would freak about.

I don't know of too many food service workers who would deliberately let things get contaminated, but it's food--it's going to get germs sometimes.

The world is full of germs and bacteria. Most of us don't die from them, even if we don't wash our hands after using the toilet.

/Or most of the less "civilized" world would have died out long ago.

I always oddly enjoyed (it was a love-hate relationship) the bags of Doritos cut in half with taco meat and nacho cheese stuffed inside. I always avoided the "taco meat" though. It was too suspicious. I can't think of any clever reason they were called Walking Tacos...

In Lunch Lady Land, your dreams come true.
Clouds made of carrots and peas.
Mountains built of shepherd's pie
And rivers made of macaroni and cheese.
But don't forget to return your trays
And try to ignore my gum disease.
No student can escape
The magic of Lunch Lady Land.
