no matter what manner of disgusting garbage you can concoct, somebody somewhere will consider it a delicacy. Just ask some people in my area about scrapple. ick, pass.

Scrapple is just sausage mixed with corn meal, there's nothing nasty in it.

I've had the Norwegian version of these, for the most part I really liked them. There are a number of different flavors, salt levels, and chewiness factors. Out of about 10 kinds I liked all but 2.

A licorice-flavored concoction they can't go on holiday without? Pffft. Call me when you grow a pair and can't get on an airplane without a couple liters of absinthe. That's not alcohol blindness, son. That's flavor country...

On the topic of gross food, what's up with marmite? I almost vomited tasting that stuff.

Then again, here we eat cow intestinal lining in soup so what do I know?

No Such Agency 2008-11-16 09:11:33 AM
Dutch licorice is definitely an acquired taste. I'm not an expert but there are some salty types I like, and others I find repulsive. They're not something you're supposed to eat a whole bag of all at once, either.

Interesting fact: the "salt" is ammonium chloride, which is also the chemical that reportedly makes giant squid flesh inedible. But it makes drop okay for low-sodium diets...

Nick Nostril 2008-11-16 09:12:03 AM
Thought they were talking about caviar. Now that's some nasty shiat.

/and I'm not a picky eater at all

In other news, there's a licorice plant. Next someone will tell me that there's a chocolate plant.

Nick Nostril 2008-11-16 09:13:44 AM
BTW... I'm intrigued and will have to look for some of this shiat to try. I'll inquire with the Dutchman that sits right next to me at work.

/have never seen him eating this stuff

Homer: Are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?

Never had drop, but I *loves* me some licorice, especially if it's fresh.

I've had it before, be warned, most of it is very very salty! You'll take a look at it and think, oh, yum! Licorice! Then - you take a chew, and WHOA - it's just a lump of salt.

But, like the article says, there are many other varieties, it's just the salty stuff is the most common. My favorite drop is made with much less salt, and no sugar. It comes in tiny little tic-tack size chips. Very licoricey.

Our household Buys this in bulk!!! HOW could anyone not like these?!!! my 4 year old daughter devises ways of getting to the jar we keep the mundt drops in! my favorites are the kokindjes... little drops of black sweetness with a hint of salty aftertaste. mmmm at work now- but wish I had some here. Pontfrac cakes are really tasty -from England0- they even have a festival every year... got the munchies now>>>>>>

I explained what black pudding was to a Canadian last night. Some foods should be tried without explaining. It is lovely, it really is.

I had some folks from Netherlands bring this stuff over. Think licorice and take all the sweet out - the part that makes it good. boil it down until it's really strong, then make little gobs out of it and roll it in salt. mmmmm, mmmm!

Might as well call anchovies a type of candy.

Nothing wrong with black pudding either. Meat, blood, don't care if it tastes good.

/Deep fried cow bollocks are good too.

Man, I've only been to the UK twice, but I love black pudding. I was a bit hesitant to try it, but once I did, there was no stopping me. And haggis is actually quite nice, as well.
Also, Amyrenea , Pontefract cakes are one of my favorite candies.
