Ronnie was the start of all of this fincial mess and ending a major research program into energy!

I pointed this exact hypocrisy to a very conservative friend of mine a few months back. He basically admitted that Hannity fell off his rocker after it became apparent that Obama would win the nomination.

My very conservative friend hasn't spoken to me since the election. Leading up to the election itself, he kept trying to convince me to vote for McCain on the basis that he's a war hero. When I pointed out that John Kerry received medals and commendations for bravery in 'Nam, he said "Anyone can get those."

Cognitive dissonance means nothing to these people. If anyone can find an excuse for hypocrisy, it's conservatives.

Regan can't be the Messiah. He has not risen from the dead yet.

Both have turned into cults of personality and that is bad. Not every Repub/Conservative thinks Reagan was coke on a hooker's ass, same goes for Dems/Liberals and Obama.

/Ronald Reagan? The actor?
//Then who's VICE-President? Jerry Lewis?

What Would Reagan do?
1) Raise Taxes 6 times in 8 years.
2) Pull the troops out of a war zone.
3) Sell Arms to Anti-Israeli terrorists.
4) Increase Domestic Spending.
5) Negotiate with the Evil Empire.

Threadjack alert:

WTF is up with selling McCain Tshirts after he lost (see banner ad that occasionally pops up above)? I get the Obama shirts, the Reagan shirts (I could even understand a Newt G. shirt), etc...but McCain? Has anyone even purchase one? If so....why?!?!

phenn 2008-11-16 09:26:58 AM
I think Reagan probably started out with solid, conservative principles. But, like so many others, he lost his way.

What would Reagan Do?

If I remember the 80's correctly, the correct answer is "call in an airstrike, then take a nap."

I love how this website talks about "visionary solutions". The Republican party hasn't been about either vision or solutions since, well, ever.

I'm pretty conservative, but besides the whole downfall of the Soviet Union, why is Reagan so revered?

I dunno, but my favorite time to wear my old Howard Dean shirt was after Kerry lost. Maybe something similar...

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-11-16 09:35:45 AM
Well, here's the thing: I think a lot of the aim of Rovian-style attack politics is to demoralize a big chunk of the electorate. You fire up the base with attacks on "moral" issues, and a large portion of the voting base gets turned off by how sleazy and unseemly the whole thing has become. One part of the electorate becomes fanatical, the other becomes apathetic. That's the plan.

So you're not supposed to believe in a candidate who's not a Republican. What are you, a fanatic?

I'm still trying to figure out exactly when during his reworking into demigod, Reagan was revised into a fiscal conservative. I guess you *can* fool some of the people all of the time.

Cache 2008-11-16 09:40:03 AM
What would Reagan do?

First he would give massive tax breaks to the rich while deregulating the banking industry. Then he would authorize borrowing from Social Security to pay government debts. Then he would make a heroic gesture by sending the marines to Lebanon, only to silently withdraw them after hundreds get blown away.

But then he would follow it up with some GREAT SPEECHES! So it's all good.

it's called a Pyrrhic victory

sunlion 2008-11-16 09:49:10 AM
...why is Reagan so revered?

His usefulness as a leader has been greatly exaggerated. A century from now, the fundies will be worshipping Reagan as a second Jesus, taking communion by drinking milk and calling it his semen. Kinda like how they do already with the ritual cannibalism/vampirism of someone pacifist whose murder they try to justify.

Shvetz: With the exception of outspending the Commies, causing the USSR to collapse, he didn't do all that much to benefit anybody.

He didn't even do that. The collapse of the soviet economy was inevitable.

Shvetz: With the exception of outspending the Commies, causing the USSR to collapse, he didn't do all that much to benefit anybody.

Reagan also told the Commies to Tear down the Wall. The saying became a world wide anti-commie battle cry that culminated in the Pink Floyd song. The pressure one the USSR became so great that they fell.

What, that's not what happened?

It is questionable whether anything Reagan did had anything to do with the fall of the USSR.

No, NO! Complete socialism can work successfully long-term! So say Republicans, anyways. It was only Reagan that caused it to not be successful.

Um, Hannity, I seem to recall a great large chunk of republican thinking a president was messiah. His name was George W. Bush.

sunlion 2008-11-16 10:03:53 AM
It is questionable whether anything Reagan did had anything to do with the fall of the USSR.

Next, some genius will quote some commie pinko tyrant downfallen leader as a reliable source for this claim. Kinda like how Xians love quoting serial killers who speak out against pr0n and stuff.

A guy I used to work with grew up in the USSR, and he said mainstream American political attitudes aren't that much different from those that prevailed in the USSR's darkest years. He said that they really believed that if you just support your leader strongly enough, and are "united," you can confront anything.

On a funny side note, he was surprised to learn that The Beatles were popular in The West. He said he had no idea that they were a big phenomenon world-wide.

This must be a tough time to be an objective historian doing research.

There are those who love Reagan so much, the would eat his poo.

There are those who feel he's the reason for 99.9% of the US's problems right now.

Then there are those (like me) that really hopes he remains dead.

He blew a lot of money, but the Russians didn't. So they were the fiscal conservatives. And look where it got them.
