Wow.

David Thomas had possibly the best stage never ever with Rocket from the Tombs: Crocus Behemoth.

You can see where he got it watching that clip.

I was waiting for him to go into cardiac arrest.

What would be the best Pere Ubu album to start with?

pipco 2008-11-16 08:19:21 AM
not only that, but it was produced by John Head!
His brother Richard was unavailable for comment at the time of this posting.

Eddie Hazel: What would be the best Pere Ubu album to start with?

Terminal Tower. It's their first handful of singles.

Eddie Hazel What would be the best Pere Ubu album to start with?

Dub Housing and/or Terminal Tower.

Some of their later stuff is pretty good too.
The Tenement Year and Story of My Life are not bad but I listen to Dub and Terminal far more often.

Pere Ubu are another one of those tragic bands whose influence far FAR surpasses their own success.

Funny,I remember seeing Peter Murphy do a Pere Ubu cover of "Final Solution" on MTV but I never once saw Pere Ubu on MTV. Even the "super hip" alternative show 120 Minutes never showed any Ubu.

Thanks, I'll check it out!

I have this whole episode on VHS somewhere. I love Night Music and I love Pere Ubu! Seeing the late Jim Jones joyfully playing guitar made me well up with emotion. And I'm pretty sure house band guitarist Hiram Bullock was lusting after Debbie Harry - did you see the way he was looking at her? (Not that I blame him.)

Night Music was a wonderful, brilliant music show with no musical boundaries and an amazing house band. No wonder it didn't last very long. They had a knack for putting together the most unlikely combinations of artists, the weirdest of which has to be Conway Twitty and The Residents. (pops)

Thanks for the blast, subby. And God Bless Jimmy Jones!

Sad.
You just basically summed up the entire music industry in that.(or mainstream media the USA at least)

Things that are original and creative are always the first to disappear.

Sam Shepard once said of the film industry:

"Hollywood is geared toward teenage idiocy."

I think this also applies to music industry just the same.

Oh well,Pere Ubu on FARK....I am happy.

Great clip and yeah, Night Music had some excellent moments.

This might have been one of them for the shear diversity of the people on stage.

Wainwright and Mansfield I can see on stage together. Even Sanborn and Glass.

But Sanborn, Glass, Wainwright, Mansfield, Debby Harry and PERE UBU at the same time?

Pretty damned cool.

The Art of Walking

That was amazing!!
I don't know what the best Pere Ubu album would be to start with...I'm a huge fan of the early singles collection, Terminal Tower. The album that they were promoting with this clip, Clouds, is a really really good pop album. David Thomas' recent cover of "Surf's Up" is amazing, by the way.

Night Music was awesome. Thank Hal Willner for that. At least Jools Holland is still around to carry the torch.

Christian Bale 2008-11-16 01:55:26 PM
Debby Harry was 45 at the time. Pretty impressive.

Thank you, Subby, I have never thought to look for Pere Ubu videos.

For people who wanna buy records, may I also recommend the totally awesome The Day the Earth Met The Rocket From The Tombs (pops amazon). Pere Ubu came from Rocket from the Tombs (pop), and I like a lot of the song versions on this record a lot. (Cleveland Rocks, BTW.)

He was a Jehovah's Witness by that point, so probably not. Just a spazz.

Note: NONE of the songs you will hear on Terminal Tower or Dub Housing are in ANY way similar to "Waiting for Mary."

Try before you buy: http://detailedtwang.blogspot.com/ and then search for pere ubu.

And I am a big, BIG Pere Ubu fan. The Modern Dance for the win. "Street Waves," personally. (The Mud Honey covers bear little resemblance to the original.)

The Modern Dance has been re-mastered in 5.1 surround sound. The idea is that you can move your head around in the space and hear the different parts better. Surprisingly, this is actually a good idea.

Glenechocreek 2008-11-16 09:21:25 PM
Crocus Behemoth used to write for an underground Cleveland music paper called The Scene. The stories about him are legend.

The Living Colour live cover of Final Solution is pretty amazing too. That is how I got into Pere Ubu originally.

Came here to say that.

I enjoyed the night that they had Pat Metheney, Lyle Mays, Todd Rundgren, Taj Mahal, and a couple of others on - and they did Gilbert & Sullivan.

NakedReporta [TotalFark] 2008-11-17 03:59:52 AM
I'd start with The Modern Dance.

I always loved this song.

I miss Night Music. And Night Flight. And 120 Minutes.

Eddie Hazel: What would be the best Pere Ubu album to start with?

My vote would be "The Modern Dance", "Dub Housing", or "Ray Gun Suitcase", or "Cloudland". The last two are probably the most "accessible" of their albums, but still chock full of the Ubu weirdness we've grown to know & love.

Any Ubu is good Ubu, though. I have 'em all. Needless to say, I'm a big fan.

XTeacher 2008-11-17 11:38:41 AM
I saw Pere Ubu open for TMBG at Trax in Charlottesville sometime in the early 90s ('93?). Good times.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I prefer their more "accessible" stuff (Cloudland), but it is all good.
