Come on, he's not even in office yet. Ya gotta give him at least a week.

Obama would face too many 2nd amendment hurdles to take away everyone's guns.

He's just going to tax ammunition at $25,000 per round and give the money to poor people.

No one thinks he is going to take them away, the only people I have heard say anything about that are libs who are trying to make second amendment supporters look paranoid and uninformed.

He is going to try to stop future purchases of many types of weapons that are rarely used in crimes.

Back in 1968 I lost two Browning .50 calibers and 1/3 interest in a 105mm howitzer. Why don't you just give me a nice paper cut and pour some lemon juice onto it?

I beg to differ. Come to Texas, go shopping in a sporting goods or hunting equipment store, and listen to the conversations around you. There are definitely people out there that are buying up all the guns they can afford right now so that they can keep them come January. They are very concerned that the new President and Democratic controlled Congress will either find a way to ban guns and ammunition or tax them both out of existence.

And a few Farkers around here are pretty convinced of that eventuality as well.

I'm not so worried about my guns, the NRA is too powerful a lobby. It would be political suicide for any legislator outside of San Francisco, DC, or NYC to try to ban semi-autos or raise a national tax on ammo.

Don't worry. All we need is a well stocked Home Depot. If there's one thing Iraq has taught us, it's not hard to turn a 60 ton tank into a paperweight using a McGuyver technique and a prayer.

So no seizing of guns is because he isn't sworn in yet, but the tanking economy is because he's the president-elect. Sure.

Nuclear powered seacraft are expensive.

Guncotton powered munitions tubes are surprisingly cheap and resilient.

The 105 mm was strictly for target practice. Anything over 15 degrees of elevation would end up more than 5 km downrange, and you'd get a call the next day from the country extension agent about whose milk you'd curdled.

I think you are missing the point.

Of course people are buying guns like crazy right now. It is not because they think Obama is going to send a swat team to their house to take them away, it is because they think that their sales will be outlawed if they wait to get them, so they need to buy them while they still can. Obama and Biden have made no secret of their desire to pass a stricter, permanent ban on "assault weapons", so this surge in buying of those types of guns should be a surprise to no one.

What I was talking about in my OP is the fact that no one who knows anything about the issue thinks that he is going to "take their guns", and the only time I hear somebody talking about guns being taken is coming from the other side, like "no one is going to take your guns you stupid rednecks."

The people who are buying guns right now are informed and are acting as should be expected.

This I agree with. My dad's Civil War re-inactor buddies had a fully functioning wheeled artillery piece that fired #10 cans filled with concrete. Pull the lanyard, cover your ears, and watch the junk-pile go boom.

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm: The people who are buying guns right now are informed and are acting as should be expected.

Most yes, some, no. The informed buyers (I'm one of them) are out there stocking up while we can on cheaper ammo and firearms. Even if the federal government takes no action whatsoever towards limiting or taxing them, the demand is increasing and that drives prices up. Get 'em while they are cheap.

But there are most certainly people who earnestly believe the libs are coming for their guns. I know it's only my own experiences I'm basing this on, but I hear conversations between customers at gun stores and the local bars from these folks. They really are petrified that the day Obama is sworn in, the ATF is coming through their front door with a battering ram to take all their registered weapons.

Anecdotal maybe, but they are out there.

I'm sure that there are people on the other side who think that they can make it happen too. I do think that an assault rifle ban would start us on a slippery slope that could eventually end in confiscation, but Obama won't be the one to do it. Maybe some of his supreme court nominees could have a hand in it though.

I think that if we see a ban it will either be in the first six months of his term, or not until his second term. The problem is it is not up to him it is up to the democratic house and senate to pass something, and he would probably sign whatever came across his desk.

Think of many Senators and Representatives are actually elected by the District of Columbia. They have to report to their constituencies back home once in a while, and this would be a big way to piss off the home base for most congress-critters.

Let's be honest. If the government wants to take your guns, it's going to take them. Unless you have something to stop an M1A2 Abrams tank or three and the infantry supporting them.

Gun hoarding is for morons. You're not really thinking things through.

Same here.

Because I never know when I might have to blow somebody's clean head off, from a mile and a half away, in order to protect my property.

And it goes without saying. No responsible homeowner should be without a 105mm cannon.

Er ... I have heard hundreds of people who think an Obama administration would take non-felons' hunting rifles, shotguns, and home defense oriented weapons. Many of these are otherwise normal, functioning, employed, parents, homeowners and the like.

I think they are wrong, but the fear is there. You can thank the farking NRA for the rhetoric about Obama that wen like this: Silence is not support. Because he has never said so, doesn't mean he doesn't wish to take your guns.

Yup. If it came to resisting a coup or dictatorship, fighting the Army is doing it the hard way, anyway. Despots know this and that's why they really fear handguns, the most effective weapon of political assasination.

He also wants to ban the sale and transfer of ALL semi-automatic weapons.

Can he take away guns you legally own today, not easily, but when asked the question, he didn't say he didn't want to, just that he didn't have the votes to get it done.

Not easily? Not at all. He's not the president yet, and even if he was, I do not believe the executive branch alone has the power to do that.
