A Hammond is being abused whenever anyone other than Jon Lord is playing it.

Don't click, it's a Rick Roll.

I saw Keith Emerson stab his keyboard in concert. I felt sort of like those 1950s kids in Back to the Future when Michael J. Fox does a 1980s style guitar solo. WTF? You were playing music just a minute ago.

(I almost wrote "modern" guitar solo. Was that movie really over 20 years ago?)

I have asked to be permabanned if I ever do such a childish thing...Once funny and all. That being said, here is some more of her abusing her Hammond.

I prefer Hammond eggs.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-11-15 05:50:12 PM
just from looking at the headline on the music page, i KNEW the video was of Keith Emerson stabbing his hammond organ with a knife to hold down a selection of keys.
how sad is that? lol

/hangs head in shame
// did he do that so he could free up both his hands, [as opposed to just one] to play other stuff? or showmanship? or both?

Zoinks! [TotalFark] 2008-11-15 05:50:39 PM
That wasn't very Nice.

Same here.

// did he do that so he could free up both his hands, [as opposed to just one] to play other stuff? or showmanship? or both?

From what I understand--and I'm no keyboardist--it had something to do with holding the drawbars down. I think I read that somewhere.

/could be completely wrong

Too bad that it doesn't include the typical maneuver of him lying on his back, Hammond flipped over backwards on his stomach like he does here, and then

he plays Bach's Toccata (the first few bars of it) freakin backwards on the keys with the Hammond lying on him and the band playing at full force.

I still remember the day in 1974 when I heard "Toccata" from Brain Salad come over the radio on KLOL in Houston and the light bulb went on over my head about music. Scales fell from my eyes.

And, Emerson ended up sleeping on friends' couches after he lost everything after the Works tour, a bad divorce, and ulnar nerve surgery. That shouldn't happen to artists, really.

phlegmography 2008-11-16 12:49:02 AM
This clip does little for me, but darn it if Keith Emerson isn't the best rock keyboardist who ever lived. He is simply astonishing.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-11-16 02:28:00 AM
oh, and the "rotating/flipping grand piano" from around 1973/74 was/is pretty neat too...

Graham Bond was the original Hammond abuser. Check out Harry Shapiro's book The Mighty Shadow for proof of where Emerson got many of his ideas.
