"It's appropriate that Obama's vetting Clinton, but she's one women,"

She embodies a multitude?

...said Amy Siskind, co-founder of The New Agenda, a nonpartisan women rights' group founded by former Clinton supporters.

Cheescake Caucus

"We want to see parity in the representation of women in the Cabinet."

Quality counts as quantity, SoS is the highest cabinet position, dumbass.

I hear there are plenty of openings in the kitchen (kidding -- everyone knows the best chefs are men).

/how about just hiring the best, regardless of sex, race etc.?

damageddude: /how about just hiring the best, regardless of sex, race etc.?

I think that's exactly what is happening. N.O.W. has a very skewed invested interest.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2008-11-15 10:52:08 AM
It's pretty simple what's going on. All the interest groups that even THINK they had a hand in Obama's win are lining up to get the post-election handouts. It will be literally impossible to please all or even most. Usually if one is pleased, anyone else that gets their way does so by sheer blind luck.

Obama's best way out is to just ignore everyone, pick what's best for him and worry about it later.

I used to respect NOW, before they started railing against joint custody laws that would have, you know, put the best interests of children in custody disputes before the narrow interests of either mother or father.

And, in recent years, they have employed this "fire, ready, aim" approach to advocacy. I see that represented in this case.

Jesus Christ...there have been two...TWO...appointments to senior staff positions. There is an entire cabinet to fill and Obama did you the courtesy of asking for recommendations! And your response? Raise the "yellow light" alarm! OMG!

As a staunch supporter of women's rights, abortion rights, equal pay, etc., and a long-time advocate and...yes...community organizer...this is exactly how NOT to do it effectively.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-11-15 11:14:22 AM
I don't suppose it could possibly be that there aren't as many qualified women as there are men? No, that couldn't be it, it must be sexism.

CelesX 2008-11-15 12:00:41 PM
Ugh, as a woman, NOW makes me angry.
I couldn't care less if his administration were all men, as long as they were qualified.

Did anyone see Gandy on the Colbert Report?

baorao 2008-11-15 12:31:07 PM
TFA: The mention of Clinton Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers is seen as particularly problematic. As president of Harvard University, Summers said that innate differences between men and women might be one reason fewer women succeed in science and math careers. The controversial comment led to his ousting as president.

They need to get over that comment. the guy's record shows (new window) that that was just one poorly worded comment.

I don't know what they're biatching about - the article says:

Stoj [TotalFark] 2008-11-15 12:33:10 PM
I'll give him credit - this is how you do it:

The Obama transition team asked NOW to send suggestions of qualified female candidates, according to Gandy.

Instead of just letting people biatch about something, you make them come up with a solution. Propose some candidates.

beechpilot 2008-11-15 12:35:53 PM
Yeah came here to say I don't care what his cabinet and staff look like as long as they are not inept, corrupt, and or just plain farking stupid. I am sick of this we supported you now fill the staff with our people shiat. Thanks for the support now back in your corner.

and from an article (new window) farther up the Politics queue:

The Obama-Biden transition team has just named the staunchly pro-Internet Susan Crawford its co-lead in the review of the powerful FCC.

so maybe NOW should take a step back and STFU for a while.

FTA: "I have been struck by how few women have been mentioned for high-level positions," said former Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin, who worked on the Clinton transition.

"Struck" you say?

But you told them you just walked into a door?

Good girl.

Madelaine Kahn worked on the Clinton transition?

How cool is that?

Didn't vote for Obama, but I would have to side on letting the man fill his cabinet and go from there. I am less concerned about Obama making choices to satisfy a particular ratio than I am about the actual people he picks.

The beauty of the way Obama raised money and kicked complete ass is that he doesn't owe these groups squat. No one can say, "If it wasn't for us you wouldn't be President."

Its beautiful.

Spaztictacular 2008-11-15 12:59:03 PM
See, the problem with many advocacy groups is they don't want the "judged by their merits not their gender or race" equality... they want the "your numbers have to match or be less than my numbers" equality.

Read: Everyone should be on a level playing field for any job in America dammit, even if we have to force people who weren't in the running into those positions!

The rumours swirling around HIllary's "Demands" are a tad disturbing.
If any prove true, it just shows that she still has not accepted that she lost the primaries and feels she has more power than Obama.
It is precisly this attitude that defetaed her run for the presidential nomination.
I really did like the Clintons when Bill was the president but the adopted air of "Entitlement" thay have decided to project is in complete opposition to the initial creation of our democratic republic.
Nobody deserves to be president but is rather chosen b y the electorat based on how their states voted. To feel you deserve the presidency is one step removed from autocratic rule.
Obama has one cohesive job now and that is to appoint, lead and inspire the nation based on his promise of change, representative democracy and hope.
That Hillary might have a desire to take an appointment where she sets the rules, limitations and autonomy is ridiculous. The Secretary of State is the golbal respresentative of the President of the UNited States whose primary function is to deliver the message, intent and diplomacy of the President.
Hillary would be a terrible choice for this position if it is her intent to act as a second government leader, equal to and autonomis of the President.
Bill Richardson would be a finer choice, by far.

I agree with this. I hope all her demands crater her chances. But the whole idea of Obama liking Lincoln's method of putting formal rivals/dissenting voices on the cabinet may be something that drives his selections. I'm all for studying history and putting interesting ideas into practice, but I think Hillary Clinton would be far better as a supreme court justice than as a secretary of state. The supreme court would keep her from grandstanding and it would get her out of the senate, but most importantly, I think she'd be an excellent addition to the court.

I feel that, with the Clintons. there's more personal ambition than there is a desire to do what's best for the country at this time.

I also agree that it doesn't matter who he appoints as well as they're the most capable candidate. I don't want to see quotas filled on the cabinet.

In fairness, Obama has just seen (and benefitted from) a perfect example of what happens when you appoint somebody just because of their sex rather thatn their ability to do the job.

So one assumes that before he makes an appointment of either sex, his prime consideration is going to be "have they got the ability to do the job?" not "Oh hey, I don't have enough ladies on my tema, gotta appoint one quick to keep the chicks happy."

Oh, please.

You know, manufactured outrage insults the validity of the issue that outrage is about. By using sexism as a tool to craft a narrative about Obama for political purposes, you're dismissing the impact and relevance of actual sexism in all its forms. It's like when Dick Morris suddenly became a feminist when Sarah Palin joined the McCain ticket, despite mocking Hillary Clinton's "strident shrillness" and accusing her of "retreating behind the apron strings" throughout the primaries.

It's an issue you crusade for as long as it's useful to your political narrative. Which is very revealing about the character of people who do it.
