I wouldn't be so sure. It's certainly a possibility, but Obama may enact some much needed reforms. He still needs to get re-elected in 2012 ;)

As for Castro, so what? He's an old dude. Once he dies, Raul will be easier to deal with. If not, then he's pretty old as well.

What are you talking about?? The dems in Congress have been in control since January 2007. The pork is/was and has been frying for all since before then.

Say what you want, you got to give the old dude credit for surviving so many attempts on his life by the U.S. intelligence agencies.

Why do you suppose it is, that there's no other single world leader that they have tried so hard to secretly depose?

They got Saddam, but they never got Fidel. If he's so evil, why didn't they just go get him? Heck, they have a military base right there on the island, don't they?

Like trying to be elected President of Cuba?

When Castro's Cuba exports something besides refugees seeking freedom (who all seem to come to the US); when it offers its citizenry a fraction of the opportunity we take for granted here - then maybe I'll think that Castro has something relevant to say. As long as dissent is met with prison sentences, as long as most of Cuba lives in abject poverty, as long as Cuba has nothing to offer the world other than a bellicose "leader", I think I'll disregard that "leader's" opinion.

The opportunity to lose your job, lose your home, have your savings wiped out, be forced to pay for bailout for the rest of your life, all with the guarantee of nothing better in the future, only that which you already had...

They were doing pretty well until US sanctions put an end to their thriving economy... education, health, welfare, jobs, all going very nicely until then. Of course, there's still the whole Commie dictator thing, but the Cubans didn't flee to the US so much until the sanctions tanked their economy.

Actually they were doing pretty well until the Communist takeover of the country and the nationalization of privately owned business.

Just because the US doesn't trade with Cuba doesn't mean no one else can.

The opportunity to lose your job get an education and a good paying job, lose buy your home (making a smart financial decision), have your savings wiped out - and then make it back again, be forced to pay for bailout for the rest of your life, all with the guarantee of nothing better in the future, only that which you already had...

Fixed part of it...most of it was too stupid to fix. Check and get back to me...how many millionaires have made their money in Cuba in the last 50 years? Now the US? And how many jobs and opportunities have been created by those millionaires? How many technological advancements that the world uses everyday? Compare with Cuba again.

/no one ever said capitalism and democracy doesn't have risks or comes with a guarantee of health and wealth. Thinking it does is too stupid to even be considered naive. But capitalism and democracy ofers far more rewards than communism, socialism and totalitarianism. Rewards come with risks.

Agreed.

That sed, Obama represents at least a chance for a much needed change while the rethugs represent an odious status quo and the further entrenching of the social, political and financial divides that keep half the nations hands around the other half's throats and vice versa (and thus off their own).

If Obama actually tried to seriously dismantle the more egregious aspects of the American economic hegemony he would get JFK'd faster than you could say "lone gunman".

Castro speaks a truth here that the American corporate MSM exist to avoid and distract from.

Once you realise that Cuba does export things (try Google), and that wealth isn't meassured in how many USD's the average person has, then I'll thinking of you as an ignorant republican.

FarkingUpTheWrongTree 2008-11-15 12:42:56 PM
From TFA: "Castro... ... suggested that American racism would keep the Democrat from winning the White House."

Hahahaha wow - this puts the F in Fail
/Yeah, extol your people's island paradise all you want, that doesn't change the fact that people are still risking their very lives to get the fark away from you and your failed government

spawn73: Once you realise that Cuba does export things (try Google), and that wealth isn't meassured in how many USD's the average person has

How are exports any better a measure of wealth than how much money the average person has?
By what standard, exactly, could the average Cuban person be considered at all "wealthy"?

Yes.

SuperCatBarf: "Learn your headline punctuation rules, CANADIAN"
Read it again. Starsrift was not saying that it was missing a period at the end (which is what you inferred, and would indeed go against Fark tradition), but rather that it would be funnier is it was "us" instead of "U.S".
Furthermore, what does being Cdn. have to do with anything? Spiteful much?
I trust an apology is forthcoming. It behooves you as a TFer to take the high road.

Of course he won't. Yet, he promised to do all sorts of things. I have a list bookmarked on my computer.

Democrats will go apeshiat when he fails to do most of them, because they hate being lied to. We Republicans aren't so naive. We know we'll get lied to, but it's for a good reason.

No they won't. They will point the finger at someone else. And in some cases they'll be right and in a lot of cases they'll be wrong. Obama's math doesn't make sense... no more than NeoCon math does. You can't make something out of nothing. It's like this B.S. with bailing out the auto industry. They're hurting b/c no one wants to buy their sh*tty cars and the Unions have them bent over a barrel. The dem's can't make them build better cars (although GM's hybrid stuff seems a step in the right direction) and their is not a chance in hell that a democrat from Chicago is going to tell the Unions they have to back off.

Unions had their place back in the time of the "The Jungle" and strike busters... but if any company tried that now they'd be all over youtube in a heart beat. Unions were formed at a time when you couldn't tell your boss you weren't working a 14 hour day. Now we're to the point where we a company can't even fire someone for gross negligence or sexual harassment without out a trail of paper work (and I speak from experience).

If you need anymore proof that the US system is flawed... look at the Toyota, BMW and other plants in the south that aren't unionized and turn out quality products, have happy employees and aren't asking for handouts.

/rant off

The new president won't bring change to the US, Castro? Well, duh. He's a Democrat/Republican. You'd have to be blind to think a Democrat/Republican would be interested in anything but maintaining the status quo.
