When you have to tell people you're the voice of a generation, you aren't.

Well, Lennon is supposed to be the voice of my generation but frankly I prefer Zappa.

/sometimes you just can't write a chord ugly enough to express how you feel so you have to rely on a giraffe filled with whipped cream

If i had to pick someone to represent us I would go with Eugene Hutz from Gogol Bordello. Him or Gene and Dean Ween but i dont think this opinion is shared by many.

I agree Zappa makes a better spokes person.

I really don't know how to express how much I loathe Kanye West. I looked for a good .jpg to post, but nothing really fits. Maybe Fark could help me out here.

That's the baby boomer generation. Our generation are the slackers who just stand around and talk about Star Wars and pussy. Since we're generalizing.

rocknrollpetrol 2008-11-14 09:44:45 AM
Musically speaking, I think history will just try and forget this decade.

OldManDownDRoad: ...Eugene Hutz from Gogol Bordello...Gene and Dean Ween...Zappa...

Jesus, are you serious? The last three or four generations are best represented by novelty acts? That's kind of pessimistic.

What what Kanye West is going to go down on who now?

And Kanye, stop buying so much porn. Your mother died of embarrassment not a plastic surgery disaster. Everyone knew her son was too stupid to find it for free on the internet.

Yea I have always thought of us as a bunch of slackers which sucks. That is not a good thing to be known for. I think artists have separated themselves so much, popular ones at least, that it is hard for their fans to look to them for advise. That and most celebrities would say anything for a buck. Whatever out of all of this crap a revival of emerge. At least that is usually how it works.

I knew something was up with him when he did the Jesus cover.

I can't remember what came first, the "George Bush does not care about black people" thing or the time when he went onstage after he lost video of the year at some european award show and started trashing the band that won, even though he said he had never even seen their video. This is about the time I started to dislike him with a passion.

Now I just enjoy watching him make a fool of himself.

He spent $1 Million on his video. In his mind that means he should win and now he claims to be the voice of an entire generation. Someone needs to gag this fool.

Yukon Cornelius 2008-11-14 10:02:55 AM
Voice of a generation? The guy can't even pinpoint who the president doesn't care about. It's not that George Bush doesn't care about black people, it's that George Bush doesn't care about poor people. If you make Mike Myers look like the intelligent one in the room, you're not the voice of a generation.

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm 2008-11-14 10:05:13 AM
I wonder who IS really the voice of our generation...

Our culture is so fractured that I doubt a consensus could be built.

I think someone will emerge within the next 5 years. There is alot of loose ends that need to be tied together and no one have been able to do it yet. Hopefully will be able to give a clear big picture view of what the fark is going on.

South Park tries to do that. I would consider them our voice after thinking about it. I know this is not an opinion shared by everyone though.

"Don't Eat The Yellow Snow"? "She farks Me"? Every Gogol Bordello song? I'm not saying it's bad music--Zappa was obviously incredibly talented at arrangements and the guitar--but how can bands with relatively superfluous lyrics be voices of their generations? Not that I think that music needs poetic or politically aware lyrics at all, but the ones that try for that and succeed at capturing the spirit of the times in which they create--those are the so-called "voices". They end up being completely clichéd because they are necessarily so: Dylan, Strummer, Cobain, etc. If you asked a hundred people who came of age in the nineties who the "voice of their generation" was, the most popular answer would have to be the right one. It probably wouldn't be the Ween brothers. I suppose, though, that given the general vacuous zeitgeist these days, I wouldn't be surprised by Kanye or Gogol Bordello being that representative--though I'd say Kanye is a bit more legitimate than GB.

Can someone please email this page to Kanye? I don't think he has anyone around him to say, "Dude, you're being a douche right now." Someone has to let him know.

My genration, part two, book three, verse four,
Jackson Five, Nikki Sixx

My old man says the Woodstock generation
Found a way to make this nation
Open up its eyes and take a look around
And he says my generation
Ain't good for nothing
I could think of something
So I thought I'd jot it down

Here's to hair gel
Hanging out at the health spa
Using condom sense
Watching L.A. Law
Here's to drum machines
Stonewashed jeans
Credit cards, fax machines
Big bow-headed chicks and frat guys
Wearing forty dollar tie-dyed t-shirts
And big old paisley ties
Here's to living off dad as long as you can
And blending in with the crowd
Oh, my generation
My generation
My generation should be proud

We were raised up in the hallowed halls
Of half a million shopping malls
And there ain't any price that we're too proud to pay
We'll buy anything from Diet Sprite
To one thousand points of light
Hey, I admit we're not that bright
But I'm proud anyway

Here's to hair gel
Hanging out at the health spa
Using condom sense
Watching Arsenio Hall
Here's to drum machines
Stone-washed jeans
Credit cards, fax machines
Big bow-headed chicks and frat guys
Wearing forty dollar tie-dyed t-shirts
And big, bold paisley ties
Here's to living off dad as long as we can
And blending into the crowd
Oh, my generation
My generation
My generation

God, I hope I die before I get old
Strike a pose--there's nothing to it
My generation
My generation
Oh, my generation should be proud

I came here to say THIS

Gunny Highway 2008-11-14 10:25:01 AM
rocknrollpetrol: -though I'd say Kanye is a bit more legitimate than GB.

I can see where you are coming from completely. Both GB and Ween do a good job of balancing fun songs with songs with a good message. I think Ween could be it because of their evolution from God Ween Satan to La Cucaracha. They have learned to use their music, as well as the lyrics, as a way to express themselves.

I would pick GB over them though. It is probably because I connect with Eugene's lyrics alot. I can understand why people dont though. I am a big fan of the song 'Think Locally, fark Globally' and I think that kind of sentiment could be shared by a generation as a whole. Not that it is realistic or practical but cultural leaders messages are not always applicable.

That is why I wold say South Park is probably a better voice. Whether you agree with them or not they honestly express themselves about the things going on that everyone is thinking about (and sometimes the things we overlook). People will look back on the show and pick up on some subtle events in our culture that will be forgotten by text books. "We wanted to do a punk rock TV show." Punks are usually honest, not always right, but honest. I think alot of people can respect honesty in my generation.

/I could of course be wrong.
