could be a couple dozen, from the far off camera view it looks like a bunch of bonfires, on closeup you can see that they are individual homes all ablaze and spread out making it virtually impossible for the firefighters to create a containment zone. The ocean is only a mile or so to the west of the fire but due to the terrain and high winds it is dangerous for any aircraft to fly.

They are also asking for any and all available firefighting units throughout the area and state to be sent there. It's most likely the case that entire neighborhoods may be wiped out.

I moved here in June and it only rained here 2 times so far.
Every day it's the same... a little cloudy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. At night it gets down to the upper 50's.
I've seen the humidity down to 6%... yes 6%.
So one "idiot" flicking a butt out of the window on the interstate and causing a fire would not surprise me... :(

Earlier tonight, I walked out of my apartment in Goleta and saw a line of fire in the hills that I wasn't expecting because it wasn't there an hour before. It spread FAST.

/It looks cool from here.

It is fall now ... Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work-and life.

/obscure?

It is a VERY bad area for a fire. There are lots of houses and none of them are easily accessible. All the roads in that area are single-lane and can barely fit an SUV, let alone a fire truck.

This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

You can see at least 20 homes burning on KCAL-9 - looks like way more in fact.

They're still organizing a response. Very scary.

Take care, Santa Barbarans.

Well, it's not near the highway (fortunately -- the 101 is pretty much the only way to get around in these parts), but... Yeah. It gets dry out here.

MY friend and I rode up to Elings Park and watched from 7 to 8:30.

The fire moved from Sycamore Canyon to Gibralter road in that time and up almost to Camino Cielo.

We could see fire truck going up Old San Marcos also.

Congrats. I wasn't expecting to see it on Fark.

I just moved from Carpinteria to Goleta (family student housing at UCSB came through, after a two-year wait). We cleared everything out of Carp on Tuesday, so I'm no longer making the daily commute through Montecito. Just in time.

Anyone close enough to hear exploding cars? People are talking about that on the KEYT forum.

Wunderground says 50 mph winds - really? Seems like really localized winds.

Can hear planes and helicopters going over now, from L.A.

Took everyone by surprise, still moving fast.

So, thanks to this website I've been watching natural disasters in this country from afar (I'm in Michigan, we shovel our weather problems). My overall impression is as follows.

New Orleans gets hit by hurricane, shiat seems to have hit fan, to this day little is corrected. During evacuations, most weren't even allowed to bring dogs.

California catches on fire, everyone shrugs, moves about as necessary. Not only are there places noted for small animal evacuation, there's places were you can take large animals. This happens so often in California, they have places for you to take your HORSES.

No real point in this observation I guess, but it is interesting. Of course, CA catches fire every year so I guess they've had a lot of practice.

scruffy1 [TotalFark] 2008-11-14 12:57:43 AM
Gilligann: This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

I believe you, I haven't been in that area in a couple of years but even then you could see how limited access was. I can only imagine that come daylight whole tracts of homes will be completely gone. Sad and tragic as it really is a nice area.

To be fair, it's the fairgrounds where they have horse shows and rodeos and such.

The fire is over Mission Ridge.

We're getting some KEYT feed via KCAL - they're showing what it looks like on the ground.

Insane.

It's heading pretty fast toward the Old Mission area - so many houses in the way.

I wondered about that, I heard that there was a fire and all of a sudden it went beyond what one would think was a run of the mill fire to virtual apocalypse

The area where the fire started last burned in 67. Mission Canyon hasn't burned in a looooooong time. If (when) it gets there the shiat is really going to hit the fan.

It's amazing how far apart the houses are, how few eucalyptus seem to be burning, but how many houses are on fire. What people must have thought of as "landscaping" is now a brushfire.

Hmm, yea my place in Santa Barbara just got evacuated. Everything north of APS, mandatory evacuations...at first I didn't take it seriously, it was 5 acres but now it's made fark, must be a real fire huh.

There are very few eucalyptus trees up on the mountainside. It's all oak and manzanita up there with sycamores and such near the creeks.

Reminders of 1990. I never thought so many lanes of freeway wouldnt stop a fire.

There is a fire somewhere in the state at least once a month if not more often. The natural flora requires fire in order to germinate and thrive, however due to more recent and increased construction in the hills, valleys, mountains and other areas that are natural fire areas there is more damage and they are more noticeable. It also doesn't help that non native plants thrive too well here and grow closer together than the native vegetation making for far more fuel than in the past.

Atypical Person Reading Fark [TotalFark] 2008-11-14 01:07:53 AM
Well, I have to say that in the past two or three years, we've had winds of an intensity and heat here in coastal SoCal that I do not remember in all my decades of living here.

Remember that intense microburst of fire in Malibu - had only a brief trip to the ocean, and it cut a narrow swath, wasn't near this big or intense - but the humidity dropped so low and it was so hot, the whole place just kind of combusted at once.

These burning houses have tile roofs too, back in the sixties I seem to remember lots more composite and even shingle roofs.
