MacEnvy: Headline references their only good song.

That whole album was pretty good. And let's not forget Damon Albarn's other act:

I understand that Blur is considered hallowed music by those who make a living by incessantly reminding us of what's important. But I never "got" it. I'm not saying that they suck (they don't). But man, talk about an overemphasis on some so-called britpop revolution.

I should have ditched that entire paragraph by typing the catch-all, "meh." That's really what it comes down to.

/meh

Awesome. Second best band of the 90s after Pulp.

I'm going to be the obligatory Blur fan who after someone makes a "Song 2" reference makes sure to point out that "Song 2" is completely unrepresentative of their overall catalog and was in fact a satire of American alternative rock music at the time.

/still a great band
//agree with MikoSquiz about the Pulp comment, with Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - a virtually unloved but constantly brilliant Welsh folk band - running a close third.

That song is the perfect sunday morning song. Honestly I hate song 2 and hate even more that it's the only song people know.

good news everybody!

i fell in love with this band, when i saw them back in 91 on the leisure tour @ city gardens (trenton nj). they have always been one of my favorite bands, and have been able to see them many times over the years. the last show i saw was @ the wiltern in la for the think tank tour. even without graham, it was a great show. think it is time to fire up itunes, for a little blur retrospective.

/you should cut down on your pork loins mate, get some exercise!

or was it 92? damn this faulty memory! checking good old wikipedia, it must have been 92.

yeah, and they'll only tour in nyc and la, woefully out of my loop.

I like song 2 even if my liking it and none of their other songs makes me a dumb yank. Woo-hoo!

/Likes Gorillaz (and most other primatez)

So the rest of the band was a little burnt out on park life?

I love Blur's self titled release (altho I have a love/hate relationship with Song 2, when it was big I couldn't stand, but now it's not too bad) as well as Think Tank and The Great Escape. Think Tank especially I can listen to from begining to end without ever feeling like skipping a track. Hopefully anything new from them will be a continuation of their growth and maturation as artists, and not just parroting of their older works as happens to so many great bands when they get a little long in the tooth.

I saw a video with Damon singing with Ray Davies of The Kinks, and outta nowhere Ray starts playing Park Life and Damon starts blushing like crazy. It was awesome. Blur always reminded me of a 90's Kinks, crazy as it sounds.

i would love to see one last proper blur album and tour with all four members in tow. i suppose i'm the only one who didn't care for 'think tank'. sadly, the tour wouldn't come to the states, and even if it did, wouldn't come down here to dallas.

i remember those mogwai shirts. i was in blur f.c. (fan club) at the time, and we wanted to print our own shirts that said, "who the fark: are mogwai?". i still wear my fan club shirt with damon's "artwork" on it.

now i'm psyched for my DJ gig tonight (shameless plug, see profile for details). i'm going heavy on the britpop. cheers for the gorky's mention Doc Strange! i think we'll be "poodle rockin" a bit tonight.

TrevorValentine: Blur always reminded me of a 90's Kinks, crazy as it sounds.

Not crazy at all considering Blur themselves credit the Kinks with being a major influence. Although I'd guess that was the concept-era 60s-70s Kinks, not so much the early rockers or later arena-rock versions.

/hopes one day to hear Gorillaz cover "Ducks On the Wall"

I think that Blur circa Modern Life is Rubbish up until The Great Escape, has heavy bits of very early Pink Floyd (when they were The Pink Floyd)in it. I mean, check it out:

Arnold Layne -- sounds like a Blur tune.

The title even rhymes with Ernold Same, a tune of the Great Escape. And this here song, Arnold Layne, has that 'story vibe' that many Blur songs have.

I've always thought that. Good call.
