That will change once the Obama's decide upon which type of dog they're adopting.

I originally thought this was a story about grandmothers adopting a grandkid.

I think it's wonderful that couples decide to adopt special needs children.

If they don't have non-disabled children at home at the same time. It's terribly unfair to them when parents do that. Essentially saying "we wanted to get a child that we can spend MUCH more time and money on than you".

Personally I hope they go for a mutt in a shelter. It would do wonders for all the unwanted pets in shelters with that sort of publicity and influence.

I can agree with the gesture in principle, but in practice those two little girls are going to have a hell of a ride for at least the next four years. If they want a pure breed albino flame-spitting Bhutanese yakhound they should get it.

I fear the day another movie with Guinea Pigs in it comes out.

Every shelter I know that takes small animals is full.

/Guinea Pigs can live 10 years with good food and veggies and a proper cage.

Farking hilarious.

The Curtises, Barbara, 60, and Tripp, 54, attribute their desire for such a large family, in part, to their own unhappy childhoods. Barbara grew up without a father, and Tripp's father left when he was 12. Both came of age in the 1970s counterculture in Northern California.

Barbara had two daughters, Samantha Sunshine and Jasmine Moonbeam, before she met Tripp in 1982 at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

Two months after their first date, she learned she was pregnant.

For a moment, I stopped reading and wondered if this was satire... Ex-hippies who met in AA and got pregnant essentially on the first date (assuming she found out around 6-8 weeks in?). EPIC.

phlegmmo 2008-11-09 11:02:53 PM
Looking ahead, Barbara and Tripp Curtis worried that Jonny, who has Down syndrome, would be alone as his siblings grew up and left home.

Please make a note of it: The correct term now is Up Syndrome. No one should feel down.

Are there different degrees of Down Syndrome? Every time I saw Trig on TV in the last couple of months he was so totally inert I could have sworn he was a doll. Sometimes Mom seemed to be carrying him like a sack of flour. It all seemed surreal. I'm not making a judgment really, but a woman in her mid 40's who gets pregnant has an enormous risk of bearing a DS child.

They're just little girls. They'd love any dog just fine, as long it's kind of like the one they like.

But it's highly unlikely the President is going to have a mutt. Too bad.

However, I do have the option, and I exercise it regularly, of putting the cats to sleep. These people need their own hero tag...

You're seriously the most awesome person I've (sorta) met in a long long time. I could never do what you're doing though. I get attached to animals way to fast

For adopting special needs children, I say either adopt once your child/ren is/are old enough to understand, or after your child/ren has/have moved out. When my brother was in scouts, there was a man there who was a Vietnam vet and had adopted like 6 children over the years, all special needs. He and his wife loved each child as much as their own blood children, and they each had good enough jobs that they could provide the children with the care they needed.

Spaztictacular 2008-11-09 11:06:55 PM
Growing up with a chronic medical condition (not Down Syndrome)I really like stories like this. Oddly enough I would argue any child forced to deal with a medical condition (that isn't a mental deficiency) is probably better at adapting and succeeding when they grow up due to the enormous amount of pressure put on them to deal with their disability.

/Am 23 and in grad school in a shared house and pays (almost) all of my bills
//Sister, with no medical issues, is 21 in her fourth choice for a major and has hopped back and forth with parents over the past 3 years and still has them paying all of her bills
///not bitter
////...okay maybe a little

As the President-elect explained it, they want to adopt from a shelter, but most shelter dogs are mutts and most mutts are allergenic, which would cause problems for one of the girls. But when you're one of the most famous people in the world, maybe a shelter somewhere can find the right dog.

Spend time with both at the same time. Teach the normie how to help take care of a special needs kid, instill a sense of responsibility and empathy toward their fellow human beings while giving a loving home to a kid who needs one. I helped out taking care of a very close family friend's disabled son from the time I was 5.

I'd never do it because I'm a selfish prick. But I think more overall good would come from adopting the kid into a home where they'd have some siblings.

It's actually funny you should mention that, as I just finished looking over some notes that discussed signs of Down's syndrome. Infants with Down's Syndrome tend to have weaker muscles and poor coordination, so they frequently appear "floppier" than normal infants.

Here's hoping that after this weekend the national media will have gotten Sarah Palin out of their system.

She was funny while she was still somewhat relevant. Now, not so much.

Though, hey, if the republitards want to hang on to her as the future of their party, go for it!!

nashBridges: I adopt special needs cats (see profile). I agree a little with the people in this story.

Translation: Cat rescuer" takes in dying/sick/special-needs cats from shelters and turns them loose outside, where they die of exposure or kill off wildlife. In the meantime, this rescuer does not provide medical care nor make any effort to keep the cats on their property. Instead, they're collared and tagged so their poor neighbors can cart the cat back to where it belongs. One of the more problematic cats, nicknamed "Coont Cat", was found dead in a ditch 10 miles from the house.

Thanks, but I'd rather die in a shelter, indoors and medicated.

Having babies at Sarah Palin's age is genetically unwise. The older you get, the more errors there are in the genetic code carried by your gametes. It isn't God's Special Miracle, it's biology. She shouldn't be reproducing at that age in the first place.
