They mimic vocalizations well, but I'm fairly certain the researchers were looking at the animals ability to be cognizant of the meaning of their vocalizations.

Which is a great thing to study, ignorant subby.

My folks have a couple of African Gray parrots that are pretty damn smart. Obviously, parrots pick up on words all the time, but these guys pick up the meaning of a lot of those words. They know what corn is, cheese, "fresh water," the names of the dogs - stuff like that.

One of the funniest damn things I've ever seen one do: He fell off his perch somehow, and when he hit the bottom of the cage, in a voice that sounded exactly like my father, he yelled, "GODDAMNIT."

Which sounds like "ability to be cognizant of the meaning of their vocalizations" isn't out of the question.

National Geo has a GREAT story on this...

http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/03/animal-minds/virginia-morell-text

After reading this, There is no question in my mind that some animals have sentience.

I promise, that if you read this you will never look at your Dog, or Bird the same way again.

Of course they can talk. They should have spent the money trying to figure out why we can't understand.

mrh 2008-11-09 10:21:48 PM
Scientific discovery does not start with the words "Eureka", it typically starts with the words "That's odd".

A lot of these studies sound ridiculous when all you know about it is one line like this. But if taken in context, knowing the full scope and reason behind it, and if you realize that a LOT of technological/medical/science breakthroughs have happened because of thousands of studies like this that sounded every bit as ridiculous on the surface, then maybe one wouldn't be so quick to call something "stupid"

tonesskin [TotalFark] 2008-11-09 10:22:09 PM
Dear lord, the only people that are more scientifically retarded than journalists are the people who think the journalists' accounts of research tell the full story. I mean, the journalists' audiences are the same people who think that the earth was "created" but gay people "chose" to be gay. Those people can't comprehend an undergraduate thesis, much less real science.

deltabourne: DAMN LIBERAL SCIENCE! Taking away our hard earned dollars that could be used for blowin' up Eye-Raqis and wastin' it on fancy elitist book learnin'!

THIS. Really, $6 million to uncover the secrets of the animal kingdom is immensely cheap, considering that we could apply that knowledge in other areas.

$6 million dollars is what, a few hours of the Iraq occupation?

tonesskin: Dear lord, the only people that are more scientifically retarded than journalists are the people who think the journalists' accounts of research tell the full story.

Indeed.
I have been quoted by a few reports (mostly local papers) and it almost never comes out right. None of it has been malicious, but they definitely don't capture the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Whoopa Fadoopa 2008-11-09 10:31:32 PM
Sounds reasonable, at least as the beginning, after all, _what_ if they do talk? Wouldn't we want to know what they're saying?

Ravens, yes, and it was settled decades ago by a Nobel Prize winning ethologist.

Damn scientists are so farking IGNORANT of even the most recent history. Bugger! to think I read Lorenz in a humanities class, but nobody in the sciences even know who he is. Now this crap faking-a-question-for-grant-money pseudoscience. More proof that the real genius in today's universities is in humanities instead of those self-righteous snowflakes in natural science.
