Love this song! Don't understand the video though.

Ha! I just love this song. And one of my brothers was born in Dunfermline, so there's that.

Still gives me a chill.

My absolute favorite band of all time.

His loss was tragic. Listening to his songs afterward it was so obvious.

Ahh I'm just going to go on and probably start crying. Check into them.

I leave you with this one (new window)

This is a great song, but the video is just the goofiest. I get this picture of a video producer trying to tie in activities that they thought would appeal to young, male MTV viewers: ATVs, motorcycles, a cute girl, and some vague hint at intrigue.

Yeah. Even asa kid I never quite got how the two tied together. Stuart did ride mothercycles is about all I ever knew, that's why he isn't on an ATV.

This may be the perfect pop song. And I kinda wanted to see Tony Butler join the Who after John Entwistle died.

Man, the bridges in almost every 80's song is awesome. The guitars sound so cool.

spacermase 2008-11-09 07:50:58 PM
Am I only one who things the opening guitar riff (sadly omitted by the video) is the best part of the song?

I like the song, but I always loved the opening for some reason

That's Corfe Castle in Dorset, where I grew up. There are also scenes in Swanage (my old stomping grounds), and abseiling at Dancing Ledge, where I learned to rock climb.

Yay, Dorset!

The UK, so many cool bands hailed from such a small country.
Led Zep, Queen, Motorhead, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, the Beatles, Stones, Duran Duran (?), Bowie, Cream, Simple Minds, Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, the Jam (yay!), The Clash, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, the Kinks, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Stone Roses, Genesis, Oasis, Radiohead, the Who, BeeGees, Black Sabbath, Happy Mondays, Housemartins, UB40, Madness, Wham!, Adam and the Ants, Chemical Bros, the Shamen, the Damned, Bananarama, Flock of Seagulls, Soft Cell, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Simply Red...

Really.

I just wrote a blog about how overlooked this kickass band was. Their album The Crossing has been on repeat at my house for a month now. Every tune on it is awesome.

RIP, Stuart.

And that's what a "classic" song is, one that sounds as good 25 years down the road as it did when it was new.

In this song, the bridges are done on Scottish Bagpipes.

Uh, Iggy Pop is from Michigan....you wish you could claim him, but he's a Yank through and through.

What ever happened to The Alarm? and Johnny Clegg?

Worst thingg about this song? - it puts a spotlight on just how craptastic the rest of the bands' catalog is.

When the title of your first hit song contains the name of your band, you're basically guaranteed of being a 1-hit wonder (i.e. Living in a Box)

Good first album though.

I have a misheard lyric for this tune: "I never took the smile away from any brace-face"

The Bee Gees are actually from Manchester, UK and emigrated to Australia.
And I assumed the 'greatest band' you're referring to is ACDC? The Young brothers grew up outside of Glasgow, Scotland and also emigrated to Australia.

Both bands were formed in Aussie, granted.

chemical_angel: Stuart Adams killed himself :(

Which is especially "funny", given how often he'd say "Whatever you do, remember, stay alive" in live performances.

Driving to Damascus and the Crossing were great albums.

(have all their studio albums and a lot of live sets)

carmody 2008-11-10 10:30:28 AM
And by the way, folks, there are NO bagpipes on the record. That's all guitar wizardry.

Show me a video from the 80s that wasn't at least a little bit quirky(other than the occasional performance vid). That was SOP back then.

Anywho.. this song is one of my guilty pleasures. I've always liked it.

Regarding the whole band name within the song title thingy:

"Clash City Rockers" anyone?

/Not their first single, I know, but still.

Alas, Fleetwood Mac's song "Fleetwood Mac" appeared on the album "The Original Fleetwood Mac" and not on either of the two albums actually named "Fleetwood Mac".

That would have been cool.

Satanic_Hamster 2008-11-10 07:40:37 PM
I'm pretty sure in the 80's there was a law saying that all bands had to put out a song with their name in it. :0

also 4NSpy - nicely done.

Sorry so late, couldn't pull the vid at work.

tetzy: Worst thingg about this song? - it puts a spotlight on just how craptastic the rest of the bands' catalog is.

There were some weak songs for sure, but more gems than just the eponymously titled track. I've got a dozen or so favorites. And they were great live.

Sigmund: When the title of your first hit song contains the name of your band, you're basically guaranteed of being a 1-hit wonder (i.e. Living in a Box)

In the US, a one-hit wonder (sort of). In the RoW, a pretty big draw and popular for the better part of two decades.

Not my favorite band, but every time Stuart's anniversary comes around or a thread like this, I'll go check out if anything new is on YouTube and go find my Final Fling cd.

Like a cover of Ruby Tuesday or Neil Young or something.

That is one video that is just begging for the literal treatment.

Big Country is my favorite band to put on mix tapes for my oh so jaded friends. They're always saying who did that one song? Was that an import from seminal band x? Nope Big Country. As in In a Big Country. As in my kareoke jam. They sort of shudder and then play along. Farking wanks.
