Obligatory.

And good luck to British Libertarians. From what I've read of them, they seem to have a lot less problems with conspiracy theorists and similar nutters that plague the American LP. They seem to be more intellectual than emotional, which is a good sign.

The UKLP website, if you're curious. Looks much more sensible as far as presenting a message that's palatable to outsiders than anything I've ever seen come out of the USLP, with a few notable single-candidate exceptions. Hell, even their site design is better and more professional.

Though of course the party is still extremely small. It wast just founded earlier this year. The British libertarian movement has in the past consistently rejected the idea of forming a distinct political party, often negatively citing the example of the USLP. The idea's still controversial in British libertarian circles.

I'm related to Guy Fawkes, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about. But trust me.... You don't. I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don't know what you are talking about. This is how bad info gets passed around. If you don't know about the topic....Don't make yourself sound like you do. Cos some people believe anything they hear.

It's a Fark meme. I don't have the original bookmarked, but someone came into a thread (about no-bid contracts in Iraq, I think) and posted that, except with "I work for Halliburton" instead of "I'm related to Guy Fawkes"...

Mostly annoyed at the Labour party tendency to claim that "a lot of constituents contact me asking me to do exactly what I'm currently doing" which is a blatantly obvious - but completely unprovable - lie. Newsflash, butthead - People who don't like what you're doing don't contact you to complain because they probably didn't vote for you, so you most likely won't listen to them.

Huh. I didn't even realise we had a libertarian party. They haven't made much impact yet then. Looking through their website, I'm fairly sure I wouldn't vote for them, mostly because of their economics and isolationism, but it's good to know they're out there.

We need more people tackling the government on issues of civil liberties.

Labour are turning into authoritarians, the Tories are (with a couple of exceptions) wetting themselves with delight at the idea of that much control when they get into power, and the Lib Dems have their hearts in the right place but are, frankly, pussies.

I might grow to be able to swallow the LP's neoliberal economics if they represent the only party that's seriously opposed to the encroaching authoratarianism.

Cheers for the link.

I recall initially seeing it in a discussion regarding Tom DeLay's arrest. If that was not the origin of the meme, it was an early use of it as no one else in the discussion recognized it as a play upon a previous posting.

Instagodwin. You can tell that a political party has no ideas when the best thing they can come up with is being anti-1984. I mean sure, Orwell'S distopia is not a Good Thing, etc, but that's a no-brainer isn't it? Anyone have any non-no-brainer arguments they can trot out? No? Well never mind.

I don't think that sending out the book and advocating against "1984" is the central tenet of their party platform. This was a publicity stunt... sort of like when the Republicans pledge smaller government and the democrats say they'll bring about peace and prosperity. It has nothing to do with reality, it just makes people pay attention to them.

Yeah, but a publicity stunt which underlines the party's probable inability to differentiate -- to find a market segment that will go their way on real-world issues.

Guy Fawkes always reminds me of the Charles Addams cartoon of the man reading a "we're all wondering what you are up to" letter from his graduating class association in front of a scale model of the Capitol building on a table--underneath is a little model of barrels of explosives.

He's just a Guy, living the American Dream, although I don't think the Class of 19** would approve.

That reminds me. I forgot to send John McCain a copy of Animal Farm inscribed: "This book is a political satire. Not a beauty manual."

Some animals are still more equal than others.

We learned these truths at seventeen
That life is meant for beauty queens...
Something, something, something....

That's a sad song, but it's hard to forget those two lines.

It used to be easy to track down the original thread, but I can't seem to find it now. It was in fact a thread about the US Mint, and the new $10 bill if I remember correctly. The Microsoft, Tom Cruise, etc. threads all came immediately afterward as a result.
