This joke gets funnier everytime it is repeated. Since this is the third hurricane of the year to hit Cuba, it is the third chance I have had to use it in the last four months.

It makes me feel so superior and pleased with myself that I am almost tempted to leave the basement, if only I could remember where I had left my pants.

It's OK. Lots of Americans think that. That's because they don't actually get to TRAVEL there.

Those of us who have been there have seen for ourselves that - while far from perfect - Cuba is a lot better than it used to be. The Castro regime of the last 10 years is FAR different from the Castro regime of the 60's. I'm not saying he doesn't need to go away, but the idea that Cubans are all living in fear and squalor is simply not true.

No, they don't all have large-screen TVs or SUVs. But they aren't starving and they don't wear burlap sacks for clothes. They have one of the highest literacy rates in the world, and are proud of their country and culture. They have computers in their schools and gas in their tanks.

They freely speak their minds on all issues without fear of reprisal. The newspapers liberally criticize government policy, albeit with an underlying tone of constructive criticism instead of railing against the authorities. Cubans old enough to remember Batista will tell you that they are far better off today than they were under the iron-fisted, pro-American, Mafia-linked dictator Castro overthrew.

Is it all puppies and sunshine? Not by a mile. But it's not death squads and bread lines, either.

America is the classic example of "You're doing it wrong" when it comes to Cuban policy. Ostracizing the nation, combined with a propaganda campaign full of epic fail has simply given the Castro regime the chance to be seen as the heroic defender of the island against American interference and oppression. Heck, they don't even have to miss out on many American products. We Canadians, as their largest trading partner, are happy to sell them pretty much anything. The U.S.' quaint little embargo hasn't cost Cubans a penny...and this year it didn't even help the Republicans hold Florida!

That trade relationship has been very beneficial in terms of encouraging Cuba to distance itself from Russian influence (which is now practically non-existent) and further relax restrictions on its press and people...something which has accelerated greatly in about the last 10 years.

It also means we get the GOOD cigars.

Is it possible to hate Castro (for being both the poster boy for "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" and the fastest example of absolute power corrupting absolutely) and the so-called Cuban refugees (who really were the upper-class white Cubans who were all pissed when they couldn't exploit the hell out of the mulattoes and black Cubans anymore, not to mention weren't part of the Batista kleptocracy anymore) at the same time?

I don't like Castro at all, but you have to admit, other than the whole going communist at a really bad time and not tolerating dissent, he's a lot better for the Cuban people than what was there before, which was as anti-dissent as he was. Their great virtue was keeping the usual Latin American US companies (UFC for example), which is why we went apeshiat after the revolution. Needless to say, I don't cry too many tears when abusive aristocracies get their asses kicked. It's just too bad that Castro was as power-hungry as he was.

Honestly, both "sides" of the Cuba issue are complete assholes, while the good guys are just the ones who go to work everyday down there, and get really nice health care.

Actually, Hurricanes have formed all the way to mid-November. The last time Cuba was struck with a Hurricane was in 1932. Another massive urban renewal project formed (or even reformed) off the Mid-Atlantic coast in 1991. (Perfect Storm anybody?)
