To you, sir.

Glass Lifted. Now, for a change, can we also lift glasses to people who were involved in less photogenic wars, including vietnam and the overall war on poverty? while we certainly should remember the brave sacrifices of all veterans, ww1 and ww2 vets certainly get more than their share.

/ and please don't dishonor vietnam vets by posting that nonsense POW/MIA crap. see www.miafacts.org for more on this.

... Because a medal is cheaper than the whole 'suporting a hero while he dies' kinda thing.

Fascinating story - I wonder how he kept his war heroics secret from his wife and kids, despite suffering in the war from frostbite and other wounds, having his toe amputated and walking with a cane.

There's a new movie about the battle of Passchendale. Cheers to the lads who fought on that ridge. (new window)

WW I was a stupid and unnecessary war fought by legions of young naive nationalists who had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

The mad lib version works too, sadly.

No offense, but I can tell that movie is no Saving Private Ryan or Tora Tora Tora by just the movie poster, alone.

Is the trolling really necessary? Can't we just have a little respect for the people that fought and died for their country? Or are you just mad because you can't hope to compare to their gigantic brass balls?

Screw off.

Well, the two posts are slightly different. As I recalled, you don't always have to have tense agreement!!

Just think, if the Brits had accepted defeat when the Russians dropped out and not dragged the U.S. into WWI, Hitler/WWII/holocaust would not have happened.

Unlike the Americans we don't stand by while our allies have their territory invaded. Wacky idea i understand, probably would've been best waiting a few years untill Britain was attacked herself before coming in, like ww2 eh ?

I'm not sure how you come up with that, Oldiron_79, and to be honest, I don't give a rat's ass how.

You aren't worth Gibbins' amputated big toe.

/Lifts can of Coke. Cheers!

Wow. Fark handle ComicBookGuy who enjoy comic book quality "war" movies. Color me shocked.

I hope that makes it to theaters in the US. Looks very interesting.

/Had three great uncles serve in the Black Watch in WWI, one came home...

I would like to hear more about the coincidence of a movie coming out about the very battle this guy got hurt in and the effort to get him this medal. Just saying, certainly does not take anything away from this mans heroism and sacrifice. But I do sense some sort of shenanigans on the part of the movie studio and/or his family. Just a theory, its early.

WTF? It was quite a large battle, quite a few people involved don't you know. Is it really that remarkable that a film might be made about it and a medal awarded for someone who took part?

A man who went to war, came within sight of his own grave, then made it home, never to brag or boast or squeal for someone to congratulate him. You just don't see that kind of dignity and honor very often, these days. Salut, Mr. Gibbins.

Looks like someone forgot Poland...

Yeah, its not like that's why we declared war or anything.

Wow, bunch of hypocritical, cynical bastards in here.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Carnage brought about by military and governmental incompetence. We lost a generation on the say so of those in power. Sound familiar?

The dead are the innocent.

To a hero. My favorite writing about WWI:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
- Lt.-Col. John McCrae

To women who gives us a reason to fight!
To whiskey that helps us to get through the night!
To all of our comrades who've lived and who've died!
Here's to women and whiskey and war!
