I'd agree with you except for the fact that the KKK essentially took over Oklahoma in the 1920's, to the point where martial law had to be declared to get them under control. See Linky (new window) from your own university's library. This week's vote doesn't do much to dispel such attitudes.

On the blue state side, I think the Bronx in NY is the bluest county - 88% Obama to 11% McCain, 1% other. Manhattan might be the second-bluest, at 85% Obama to 15% McCain. Apparently New York, home to the largest Jewish community in the world, was not well-enough informed that Obama is going to sell out Israel because he's a Muslim pal of terrorists. If only there were newspapers or other media outlets in New York!

Anyway, I am too lazy to actually do a county-by-county search to see if there were any greater extremes, so if anyone recalls seeing a red or blue county that broke the 90% barrier, please post.

That was 85 years ago. No southern state can claim that the klan was not an active force in the 20's. I've lived all my 44 years in Oklahoma and can say that I have NEVER encountered anyone claiming membership in the klan or the AN. In fact when I was in high school the klan had a "membership drive" at our school and it was rebuked by whites, blacks, Native Americans, and Hispanics alike. My point is that just because OK voted overwhelming for McCain that is not an indication of racism.

I think King County in TX went 92 or 94% McCain, but it has a population of about 350. There was one other county right around it that went about the same.

I drove cross-country once. Oklahoma vied with New Mexico for biggest dump. At least NM had a beautiful landscape.

But stereotypes make life so much simpler--don't confuse us with your "facts."

I can attest to this. I live in the heart of Little Dixie. There are almost no registered Republicans here. Almost all local candidates are Democrats, so everyone registers Democrat to be able to vote in local elections. They vote Republican in presidential elections, though. The town I live in has only had black people living in it for less than 10 years. Before that, they weren't welcome here.

I have only been to Oklahoma once.

I was much younger and was driving through with a few friends, headed west. I pulled into a gas station that could be fairly described as "In the middle of nowhere." I had a ponytail but wa travelling in a group of 3. Two looked very conservative and we were in a borrowed Suburban with USMC stickers. We pulled in and were waved at but when I exitted the vehicle the owners said " Nuh-uh. Not here. Go on!" and pointed down the road.

I said "We, uh, just need gas." The man said "Not here, you piece of shiat. Go!"

We left on fumes and were eventually able to find a gas station a 30 mmiles drive and 4 miles walk later.

Scary.
