I love Billy's response.

Saw their free concert in the Twin Cities back in the late 90's (in an empty lot that is now the dreaded Block E). Awesome experience.

Billy is an egomaniac douche who never left 1995.

I saw the Pumpkins open for Pearl Jam and the RHCP in '91. GOD, did they suck. Listening to BC sing is akin to hearing someone step on a cat. Rhythmically.

Jimmy C. owns, however.

Guess what? Ronights show will suck too, and tomorrows and the next day and the next and....

That whole scene in music pretty much just sucked.
Vocally, in the 40's you had crooners, 50's gave us doowop, 60's and 70's were soulful, late 80's we screamed and in the 90's rock and roll became a bunch of whiners.

craigdamage 2008-11-08 11:49:30 AM
Their set list should simply be the entire "Gish" record and NOTHING else.

...only addition of maybe "Cherub Rock" or "Rocket" or possibly something from "Pisces Iscariot" would be OK.

btw--why aren't D'Arcy and Iha involved in this? Did they ask Billy to pay them or something?

Wow, hard to imagine it's been 20 years since they ripped their name from an online forum running joke game title. Some coder actually throw together a working version. It was spawned during the often delayed wait for the first release of Doom. IIRC

Oddly enough, If you listen to the track "Where Boys Fear to Tread" (from MCIS, disc 2, track 1), an explosion from Doom is used over the song's riff at one point.

There were online forums in 1988? Yeah, I suppose I had Prodigy in 1990. Someday I'll force kids to listen to stories about how email was $.25 per message. Got a lot less spam then though.

Ah, the good old days of hacking the Big Three for free time online so you wouldn't have to pay by the minute.

I wish. The stuff from the early/mid-90s was spectacular. It has been a sad downhill slide after the Mellon Collie/Aeroplane timeframe.

You know, I kind of relish the fact that Corgan is really pissing people off by playing a show not consisting of just the hits. Whether it's good or not is one thing, whether it's intriguing or not is another. Yes, I'm a fan......they're a group that's difficult to love at times, but I still love 'em.

awfulperson [TotalFark] 2008-11-08 02:15:27 PM
What I want to know is, how can you sing like that for 20 years and still have a voice?

Have you ever tried singing like Billy Corgan? It'll f*ck up your voice box in less than a minute. Make you sound like you just smoked a box of cheap cigars.

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2008-11-08 02:18:37 PM
I like the Pumpkin. but yeah, Billy cant sing and play at the same time, apparently. Live, His voice makes me cringe

DontBeSoDigital 2008-11-08 03:24:52 PM
Meh. Zeitgeist has some very solid tracks, and the American Gothic EP is very good.

Marla Singer's Laundry [TotalFark] 2008-11-08 03:45:02 PM
His singing voice reminds me of one of the wussier Muppets.

I thought D'Arcy split a while back. She wasd replaced by Melissa Auf Der Maur, no?

I dig the song they used for Batman and Robin that they're using again for Watchman in what I assume is some sort of attempt at irony.

Those setlists are pretty lame. Hits and crappy post MCIS stuff mix with the terribly new stuff. It's cool that they threw in Landslide, but there's a ton of stuff pre-Adore that would have been awesome to hear. Thank god I didn't get tickets.

After seeing them at the Bridge School show this year I'm through with SP...Josh farking Groban. Sigh.

schpaetzle 2008-11-08 06:56:03 PM
I don't know about now but I saw them on the Mellon Collie tour and they were very good.

With the exception of the Groban thing, I really liked the Bridge School stuff.

Personally, I'm happy they're not really playing the hits.

Ya know, before Jimmy OD'd and the Melvoin died I would argue about how great they were. I saw them about a week before that happened and it really was one of the best shows of my life.
Everything after that has been a landslide into badness. I saw them back in August and regretted making the 20 minute drive. The guy they pulled up on stage at the NYC show in the article may not have written a big song but Billy hasn't either in the past decade.
It's just one of those things that makes me feel so disappointed that a band I used to just love so much and listen to all the time has fallen so far and been replaced by another band that sucks so much. Going toYoutube and watching some old clips from back in the day honestly does make me feel so sad, and not in a good grunge rocking way either.

ringah814 2008-11-09 09:34:40 AM
I'm listening to 'As Rome Burns' right now, so, you know...

I'm seeing them in Boston for the first time next week. Billy's voice is sometimes cringe-worthy, but the guy can shred. And there always Ginger, too!!

No, and I know this because this is one of my favorite all time zingers from him:

"To my utter shock at times, I am completely hetero."

Fat_Bongo 2008-11-10 10:33:00 AM
Billy Corgan's hair was a much better songwriter than Billy himself. It's no coincidence, that Gish and Siamese Dream owned MCIS, and MCIS was better than Adore, Machina and all the other tripe that followed.

HIS HAIR USED TO WRITE THE farkING MUSIC.

I would go if he was going to get onstage, play Starla, then leave.
