Led Zeppelin has always been one of those bands that I'm perfectly content to listen to in small doses. A few of their songs actually manage to transcend being songs and become something else, something beyond music. Something more like a perfect encapsulation of a moment or a mood. But these are few, and their fans then take those few truly great songs and attempt to paint the rest of their repertoire, which ranges from somewhat OK to blandly average to soul-crushingly bad, with the same level of worth and therefore elevate the band to something godlike and untouchable and worthy of endless whining and pining and ruminating over future reunion tours that will never, ever happen and never, ever should.

The problem with Zeppelin was their last 2 or 3 albums. Their early sound is what I really think of as "Zeppelin". Hard, hard rock and blues, raw studio mixes, pounding drums, shredding guitar riffs.

Once they started integrating Lord of the Rings into their songs, I start to get a little weirded out. Their transcendental music is completely wimpy. IMO, they started to lose it around Zeppelin IV.

darkhorse23 [TotalFark] 2008-11-05 01:33:16 PM
swinginjohn: IMO, they started to lose it around Zeppelin IV.

I agree. I was a teeniebopp when Led Zep's first album came out, and was already over them by IV. They, like other bands (hack, hack coughROLLINGSTONES) needed to stop putting out music when they were at their peak and go on to other things. The Rolling Stones today embarrass the shiat out of me, and I'm proud of Robert Plant saying that he wouldn't do a Zep reunion because, well, he's moved on.

This is half-right in my opinion. Playing live Cream was the better band but song-wise Led Zeppelin was much better. The weird thing is that Led Zeppelin used to be a bit weird even on their album recordings. Listen to Misty Mountain Hop. The timing of the song is off from what it's supposed to be and it's quite noticeable.

I'm with ya. I respect Zeppelin for their stature and contributions, but they've just never really grabbed me on an emotional level. I'd never go so far as to be insulting or say they "suck," or anything juvenile like that...They were very good at what they did. It's just that what they did wasn't what I was into.

But their fans, like Pink Floyd's, are obsessive. If you're not into their band, they feel like it's just because you haven't given them a CHANCE. Like you haven't heard enough of their stuff to hav e an informed opinion. And when you tell them you've heard them plenty, but just decided they weren't your bag, they look at you like you have two heads. They literally can't wrap their brain around the fact that someone is just "meh." And they always try to get you to sit down and listen to Dark Side of the Moon / Houses of the Holy, and actually get irritated when you tell them you HAVE heard it, and while there's nothing WRONG with it, you just didn't particularly care for it.

People have different tastes, and this is as it should be.

While I agree with the basic sentiment, that LZ is overrated in many aspects, and falls short of deserving some of the adulation they have received over the years, the fact is, Cream isn't exactly Teh GodBand Supreme, either. Mr. Bruce needs to lay off the 40 year old hallucinigenics, and just accept the fact that nobody gives two Keith Moon turds what he thinks these days.

And, yes, if I were to pick a GodBand Supreme, my vote would be split between pink Floyd and The Who, with The Beatles trailing a distand 15th, somewhere after Primus and the Trans siberian Orchestra.

Zep's been my fave since I was a wee one. I never get tired of them even as my tastes change and expand. But I know just the kind of douchebag you mean, and they annoy me, too. All bands have fans like that, the bigger bands just have more, and you encounter them more often.

That said, just fkn retire the band Page/Jones. Not that there's anything wrong with playing a gig now and then, or doing a few Zep tunes, but Led Zeppelin died 28 years ago. And if Plant isn't on board, you can't even pretend to be Zeppelin. Just...STOP

Robert Plant is a slimy fark
John Bonham man, he really sucked
Those greedy farkers, those phoney shiats

"Stairway to Heaven" makes me see red
Bonzo's buried, only three more left

This reminds me of the "feuds" between the Beatles and the Stones in 1964 and 65.

i watched some clips of the cream reunion tour on youtube...
they weren't very good... Ginger baker just sounds like an average drummer now... the tempos were slower... clapton was just as average as he has been for the past 20 years... [imho his last good playing was on "pros and cons of hitch hiking" by roger waters]
and jack bruce's bass was too low/soft in volume.

vintage cream, especially 'live' cream was great.
the power and virtuosity and talent those three had in that group live was beyond wicked cool.
Clapton's solo career was great up until 1979, that "one more night" was his last good record, in my opinion. I haven't heard any Bruce solo stuff.

i haven't seen any clips of the led zep reunion concert last year, but it is probably 5x better than the Cream one from a few years ago.

oh and imho, Led Zep's peak was from 1971-1976.
it ended as soon as the first track off of "presence" ["achillies last stand"] ended. "In thru the out door" was ok.... parts of it sounded like a Plant solo album lol

zappaisfrank [TotalFark] 2008-11-05 04:49:33 PM
Led Zep is one of those bands that I am totally sick of hearing. Every rock radio station plays their songs to frickin' death! How many times can you hear the same tunes and have them not sound stale.

I agree with whomever said that Cream was a better live band. Zep sucked live..they were sloppy as hell.

jj325 [TotalFark] 2008-11-05 04:56:48 PM
Music aside I think a lot of bands from the 60's were jealous of Zeppelin taking the concept of "Rock Stardom" to the next level when it came to money and fame.

Musically---I'll take The Who on a bad night in 68-69 over Cream or Zeppelin on their best night same time frame

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-11-05 04:57:46 PM
Bruce was a great bassist... one of my fav's...
along with John Wetton, Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, etc.

Never was a Cream or Zep fan, but calling them crap? John Paul Jones and Bonham were a killer rhythm section, Jesus Jack ditch the bitterness. A player as good as Bruce should at least recognize JPJ as the motherfarker player he is.

/I am sure just about anyone who plays bass, even if you don't like Zep, would agree

And I would have to add The Beatles.

I'll listen to their songs if they come on the radio and I like many of them, and I respect their place in music history. I just don't dig them and don't own any of their albums and don't make a point of listening to them.

Love me some Black Sabbath, Kinks, and Hendrix if I want to hit that era.

It can't be denied--

1966-1968, CREAM was the sh*t.

Jimi Hendrix sure thought so as they were his favorite ROCK band.

I would say that if Clapton,Baker and Bruce weren't such major bickering assholes and had kept going into the 70s they would have done some pretty astonishing work right along with Zeppelin's best and most epic rock masterpieces.

i read about Cream in my rock encyclopedia as a teen
and dutifully sought them out

only to discover they really kinda sucked
whether clapton was playing guitar or not.

Zeppelin is ten times the band Cream was
and Jack bruce has passed his best before date

Led Zeppelin's fans just can't stand that other people aren't big fans along with them. Just look at some of the hate mail that this guy got for posting a list of his favorite albums that don't include any Led Zep:

You are an idiot, your taste in music is pathetic. To even include the clash, a wannabe zeppelin, or the birds who had one good song is retarded. You are clearly a top 40 fan, who is trying to seem like he knows what he is talking about when it comes to music. The crap you listed has no place in the top 50 of anything except albums not to buy. You are a waste of a home page, geek.
--Kevin W.

It's obvious that you have no idea what good music is. How could you say that albums by groups like The Clash and The Feelies are better than albums like Physical Graffiti? You are a moron.
--Rob

heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, i guess u like crap rock and roll (punk) actually its not rock and roll// the best band in the world is not on it at least 2, led zeppelin. Their best albums are physical graffiti, led zeppelin 4, and houses of the holy. i actually would put them all up there. physical graffiti is the absolute best came out right in their peak year, 1975. why dont u listen to the albums all the songs and then rewrite youre list. i'd recommend that kashmir is their truly greatest song better than stairway to heaven to monstrous epics. better than some 2 minute freken punk song.
-- Unsigned

the greatest band that has ever made an album. NO OFFENSE BUT YOUR SENSE OF Hey man...uhhh I dont know what to say other than I was expecting some Zeppelin or maybe Pink Floyd CMON whats the deal? Im not a critic on music but this music sux unless your a chic. I would of had Stone Temple Pilots up on this top 50 before i would have The Clash. THE CLASH????? COME ON MAN!! Anyone with musical taste would know Led Zeppelin is MUSIC SUCKS!

Zep was definitely a very good band, but realistically it was about 75 percent cock-rock. Some of the best cock-rock ever done, but I'm kinda sick of the attitude that every time they took a shiat it was pure genius.
