Wait I thought Republicans were all for stricter border control and the Democrats were for letting everybody stay? The Bush Administration seemed to be pushing for amnesty but I didn't see a whole lot of Republican support for it.

If he says no, he's going to be made out to be a bastard by the GOP and their mouthbreather keyboard whoriors for being soft on crime or supporting special exceptions for his family.

So, in conclusion, I'd just like to say: Eat a bowl of dicks.

oh bullcrap. There is no way Obama is going to have her deported and keep it that way. The most that he will do is send her on vacation and while she is gone make sure she gets citizenship. That or just pardon her when he is elected and grant her asylum for some reason.

NO politician, regardless of party, would let a relative get deported if they could do something to stop it, regardless of their party. If they did, then they are pretty damned heartless. He's just saying what has to be said to get past this - playing politics, just like everyone else in DC.

So is it your position that there is no position Obama could take that would satisfy you on this issue?

It seems to me that you and others will insist on holding Obama accountable for the actions of another person with whom he has very little contact. It further seems that regardless of the position he takes on that issue or the actions he takes, people will insist that he is wrong.

If he:

1. Says the law must be followed, he's throwing her under the bus.
2. Tries to get her help, he's soft on immigration and/or supports unequal treatment, or special treatment for those connected to the powerful.
3. Says the law must be followed, then later uses legal means (a pardon?) to resolve the problem, is still subject to the accusations in 2 above.
4. Says the law must be followed, then refuses to intervene on her behalf, is "heartless" and can therefore be attacked for throwing her under the bus.

Is it your position that you will make hay with this NO MATTER WHAT Obama says or does?

It's OK to admit it.

But Sarah Palin has already proven Katie Couric is a gotcha journalist.

So obviously Obama is in the clear here no matter what he says.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 09:02:08 PM
Bad, insane laws that Obama apparently doesn't really want to change.

Though the fact that she's a barely-known relative of his shouldn't matter. It's not like Obama could realistically be expected to say otherwise.

I have to say, even though I think it should be of no consideration in the election, I do find Obama's bizzare, international, and apparently almost totally estranged family to be amusing/interesting. There's the illegal immigrant aunt, the brother in the slums of Kenya, and then the other brother who's Chinese. I predict we'll see all kinds of interesting relatives popping up all over the globe throughout his presidency. It'd be like Billy Carter times a thousand. I guarantee at least one of them gets a reality show, and that at some point they'll all be brought to the White House for a sappy, staged photo op "reunion". Probably the first time Obama's approval rating drops below 50%.

Psychotropic 2008-11-02 09:12:41 PM
Here's how Obama can get her in the country legally.

1. Pay for her flight back to Kenya before she's officially deported. (it's almost impossible to ever get back in once you've been deported)

2. Hire her as a housekeeper. File the appropriate paperwork to get her a work visa as a sponsored employee. This isn't that difficult. Millions of foreigners come here every year on work visas.

3. Bring her back to America and move her into his house as housekeeper and caretaker. (the Obama family isn't going to be there much for the next 8 years, it would be nice to have someone keeping an eye on things)

4. While she's here help her with the requirements and paperwork for obtaining citizenship.

No special treatment necessary.
No throwing her under the bus necessary.

I really don't care who it is. I'm also not saying any action he may choose is right or wrong. I'm just saying that he's full of crap if he expects the public to believe that he's not going to help out a relative. Wouldn't you help out? I would. He's human, and stuck in a tough spot, but to simply say "Oh well, tough shiat for her!" seems to easy and cold an answer to seem believable.

Yeah, that's a good one. The guy is probably one of the most powerful people in the US (today, anyway) and he can't reach auntie. When was the last time he tried, I wonder.

Michelle & Obama are selfish pigs. They have destitute relatives that they could help & they spend more money on lunch than they do to help any of their family.

People should obey the law.
People should also take care of their own. Legality aside, it speaks volumes about Obama that while he's busy lecturing the rest of us about Hope, Change, spreading wealth around, social justice, economic justice, blah blah blah, his own flesh and blood lives in sub-human conditions (by American standards) in public housing.

It says a lot about where Obama's heart is. In fact, it tells you just about everything you need to know about the man.

Obama has a few odd "tells" in his speech patterns, when he's lying, at least when he's lying about family members. Referring to his deathly ill grandmother, he said: "I don't know that she makes it to the election." Neither sentence is normal, conversational speech. He's having to think hard about what he's saying, and it doesn't sound quite right as a result.
