"He forgets that we were labeled bitter and hanging on to our guns and our Bibles," Mr. Munchak said. "I don't believe the polls. I honestly don't believe the polls. I think a lot of people, when asked, are afraid to say they're voting against Obama because people will put that (racist) label on them ... I think it's a lot closer than Mr. McNulty thinks."

For every person who is claiming to be Obama to avoid being called a racist, there is a person who is claiming to vote for McCain to avoid being called a liberal.

No subby, that's an hero. As farked up as it is, that is part of McCains strategy, and there are undeniably supporters of McCain who are just that.

SVX [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 08:41:47 PM
Got news for you, people. Racism is about the only thing keeping McCain in this race - nationwide. With this kind of election tide for the Democrats, the presidential race should have been over two months ago. Even John Freaking Kerry would be up 12-15 points this year. Obama may be a stronger candidate than Kerry ever would have been, but he is still a black man running for the nation's highest office. There are a lot of people in this country who will vote for anybody but the schvatrze. Obama will probably still win, but it's going to wind up being around four points, instead of the massacre that this election cycle should have produced.

yes. That is the case. The polls say Penn is solid blue. McCain thinks they can win because they think whites are saying they'll vote Obama when they actually are going to go vote McCain.

SVX: Got news for you, people. Racism is about the only thing keeping McCain in this race - nationwide.

Nah, what's keeping him in the race is a long history of service marked by an exceptionally moderate tone.

Basically, people are figuring (probably correctly) that the "new McCain" with the racism and the hard-line GOP bull is just empty campaign pandering, a la Clinton, Bush, etc. They're banking on him returning to normal once he's in office.

Of course, the racism might give him a chance to win, but that's different from not being in the race at all. He's a solid candidate in his own right. If he hadn't chosen Palin as a running mate, I would have considered giving him a shot.

Today is diversity day and someone's going to come in and talk to us about diversity. It's something that I've been pushing, that I've been wanting to push, for a long time and Corporate mandated it. And I never actually talked to Corporate about it. They kind of beat me to the punch, the bastards. But I was going to. And I think it's very important that we have this. I'm very, very excited.

/Slow night if I'm first with these.

Thanks. I call it the "Palin Effect"

I'm guessing that there are hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of people out there who on the surface still support the GOP ticket, but when they are in the privacy of the voting booth, they will vote for Obama or a third party. Especially in some conservative parts of the country where admitting you're voting for a Democrat would be like saying you hate Jesus.

Of course the McCain camp can't just go and stop campaigning simply because the odds are not in their favor, but it is quite likely that any optimism they have to offer one another at this point would be a sense of faith in the Bradley Effect. So this mayor is just calling them out on it. Seems simple enough to me.

FredaDeStilleto [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 09:06:34 PM
I live in northeastern PA and have to say that, at least in this part of the state, McNulty is correct.

The Democrats have a stranglehold in this area. There is a disproportionate amount of over 65's in this region then nearly anywhere else in the US and they vote straight party ticket. Things were fine when Hillary was a possible candidate but once it became clear that Obama would represent the party, things changed.

There's a local talk radio host that just demonizes Obama and Casey every single show. I can't say that the guy is racist, but the callers-in are doing everything but burning crosses at the station. There's another local race going on that is pitting a standing Congressman against the mayor of Hazelton, Lou Barletta.

Barletta came to national attention when he decided that any one with brown skin should have to show their papers before they rented a home or applied for a job. The sad part is, he will probably win the election.

This place is pathetic.

ZachF81 2008-11-02 09:06:39 PM
Now it's time for someone to tell me why whites who won't vote for Obama because he's black are worse than blacks who are going to vote for Obama because he's black.

There still hasn't been a convincing argument for this.

Racism is alive and well in this election, trust me, and that's why Obama has the slight lead in the polls.

jjorsett 2008-11-02 09:06:45 PM

Kanjorski has skeletons in his closet but I'd rather have one more term with him than have that pandering-to-racist vote getter, Lou Barletta in office.

I think there's a difference between choosing to vote for someone based on race and saying "I'll never vote for that ni**er." I'm not seeing they get a blank check but being white I can't put myself in the shoes of someone who has to look back on a history that includes slavery, civil rights abuses, and second class citizen status and not feel a little bit of pride at finally getting "one of ours".

I agree though it's a double standard, but as 80-85% of blacks vote Dem anyway, it's not too much of a stretch to make that 90%. I think what's changed this election is enthusiasm for a candidate, the drive to get out and vote because it feels like you really are making a difference. Don't let McCain's "celebrity" bullshiat trick you, he'd love to fill a park with 100,000 people, even if the Secret Service wouldn't.

DarnoKonrad 2008-11-02 09:13:42 PM
Let's put this in context. There's a skin head from Pennsylvania running around saying Obama doesn't love America with offical sanction from the McCain Palin campaign.

Sure, Ill explain it to you:

BLACKS ARE NOT VOTING FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.

FACTS:

THe Black vote is about 4% HIGHER for OBAMA then Kerry..

the WHITE vote is about 4% HIGHER for OBAMA then Kerry!!

DO you understand I will explain this to you 100 times more.

No is this your "shut up" lie?

I explained it to you.

Bill Frist 2008-11-02 09:17:08 PM
jjorsett: ZachF81: Now it's time for someone to tell me why whites who won't vote for Obama because he's black are worse than blacks who are going to vote for Obama because he's black.

Blacks aren't voting for him because they are black.

HIs race certainly excites blacks and no doubt causes them to donate more money and canvas for him, but blacks already vote for the Democratic party at rates over 90%. Obama is not causing any real shift in black voters.

Do you honestly believe that if this wasn't Barack Obama but Alan Keyes running for president he would be getting 90% of the vote?

Of course not, because blacks aren't voting based on race.

On the flip side though, are there some white racist voters who would be voting democratic if the candidate was white? Yes, likely.

Would these voters vote for any black candidate? No, not likely.
