I'd believe Kucinich over any of the pack of liars in the White House, so it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Knight without armor 2008-11-02 12:10:18 PM
A few months ago I would've said the October surprise would've been Iran (the admin has a 5-7 air strike plan, and a phase II 30-45 air strike plan, and then....no plan) but I think that would have been overkill. I believe it about Syria - I haven't heard anything about what was so pressing and certainly it has been universally condemned.

The October surprise really needed to be a national security item. It's McCain's one great strength and even Dems see Republicans as the strong military leaders. Create a military crisis and the nation turns its lonely eyes to QVC McCain. Thank goodness- in this regard- the economic crisis overpowered everything else. Talk about your chickens coming home to roost.

while I certainly wouldn't put it past some of our white house boys to pull something like this to help McCain....that raid looked more like a case of bad directions and mistaken identity than any organized and well prepped election propaganda media event material.

That said, we still have tomorrow for someone to pull off a major surprise. so hang tight and we'll see what happens.

I think six years of Donald Rumsfeld put a serious dent in that perception. Robert Gates is doing a pretty good job so far, but I think Rummy plastering himself on TV every night during the war has hurt the relatively media-shy Gates.

A lot of voters who don't follow defense isues that closely probably couldn't pick him out of a line-up.

There is alot of win in that.

If you were in a position to try and pull something like this, wouldn't that be the cover?

"No, no it wasn't politically motivated, it must just be hostility and tension in the area and some overzealous troops. We'll investigate this potentially inflammatory event happening in a world that requires a president with impeccable foreign policy experience immediately."

I'm not saying it was some kind of political ploy, just that the fact that it doesn't look like a one, isn't evidence enough to dismiss it.

I understand the paranoia the Bush administration has created in Americans who respect the constitution but, mistake or not, regional commanders have been given the go ahead to authorize cross border raids.
This is widely reported information and these are fast moving targets of opportunity.

I think if the US military had been politically compromised to the degree of things like the Gonzales justice department there would have been a big WMD "discovery" by now.

I'm curious, is the tin foil reference because those making the accusations of tin foil don't believe our government is capable of such things?

If it weren't for the filthy lawless tactics the Bush administration has been caught using for the last 8 years, these kinds of questions and doubts wouldn't come up about electronic voting fraud, outing of covert agents, firing of US attorneys, propaganda in the media, lies, damn lies, more lies, politicizing the gao, politicizing government contracts, politicizing of corruption trials, politicizing everything you could lay your greedy claws on.

This is Bush's legacy. You republicans bought it, and now you are paying for it.

Hot wife aside, i find it more than interesting that the politicians that actually do right are considered the craziest. It's an upside down world we live in.

True enough.

I guess I just don't believe career military commanders are doing less than their best for their men and their mission and if the call was made at their level I'm expecting it was a honest one.
Also I don't think it was big deal for domestic politics, people have seen so many "number 2" guys get killed over the last seven years that they have tuned it out.

(not that the #2 nomenclature hasn't been ridiculed away but dead arabs not named Osama Bin Laden create little excitement now)

Agreed. It probably was a smart call, but the timing was suspect. But still, as you say, it had little impact I think so it kind of seems like a non-story.

I also wouldn't put it past Syria to be making up half of it anyways. It's not like there is some big bright line in the sand or big wall or sign saying "now entering another sovereign nation's territory, proceed only if it helps republican presidential candidates."
