Yeah, racist rednecks get kinda touchy when you leave out the drunk and gun toting part.

Let's not forget bitter and clinging to religion.

I've lived in central PA and, as I've said many times, it was the most racist place I've ever lived. It was all hush-hush and not in the presence of the race in question but it was most certainly there and prevalent.

South Carolina was tame in comparison.

I'm in his district and he knows that his most of his constituents see these labels as badges of honor.

Don't forget homophobia and the odd bit of religious persecution either. Even I'm barely white enough to live here.

That said - Murth is a jackhole who deserves to lose. I won't be sad to see him go.

I lived in Central Pa. as well, and I concur. My wife and I were not greeted warmly. I'm glad we moved back to the Philly suburbs to have our twins.

I'm a PA resident also - and Murtha is on my ballot. He's right, and it IS a racist area. Anyone who's trying to deny this is clearly a politician. I don't know of anyone who has been "outraged" by his quote.

I know a lot of people who agree with him.

I can almost respect that.

This guy is an idiot and should have been on his way out long before this because of his comments on Haditha.

That said Pennsylvania is the most racist state in the country, and that is coming from someone who has lived in Florida and Alabama. The most racist people I have ever known have all been from Pennsylvania. It is almost like they regret that their forefathers had not been on the side of the confederacy, and tried to make up for it by being more racist than the southerners.

/And driving through Pennsylvania, I crack myself up seeing all the confederate flags flying.

Murtha is dead-on accurate. I live in southwestern pennsylvania, and when people make redneck jokes about west virginia, they're really talking about this place.

3_Butt_Cheeks 2008-11-02 01:21:51 PM
Murtha's a real winner.

If Obama loses PA, you can thank that asshat.

(Time for someone to post the obligatory electoral vote map or poll).

Last year some of my friends at our college libertarian group were doing outreach on the main path through campus, and some guy came up and asked if they'd ever been to any neo-Nazi rallies. (Obviously they hadn't.) The guy was from the Poconos. Even up here in Ithaca there's a lot of Confederate flags.

I called a guy out on another board for racist comments. We got into a pissing contest which ended up with him wanting to fight me, at which time I put him on my ignore list. Other members there had my back (i.e. agreed with my assessment that his post was racist), but that guy saw absolutely nothing wrong with what he had posted. Denial is apparently just a river in Africa.

The most racist people I have ever met were in Detroit and in Atlanta. Almost all were non-white. Murtha is still a jackass, and Obama guns and religion insult was not much better.

This. I drive through south central PA because there are some nice back roads for my curve loving cars, and it astonishes me to see the Confederate battle flags flying in front of so many houses. I tell my friends in Florida (where I grew up and still go back to visit) and they have a hard time believing me.

It wasn't an insult. It was an accurate observation on what a lot of the people in the middle of Pa base thier voting on. It's fact. People who are too lazy to actually inform themselves on what a candidate stands for fall back on single issues, such as guns and religion.

I live in Northwestern PA and honestly did not know this was viewed as a racist state until Murtha made his comment. I'm sure there are some racists among us up here, but they don't openly display it. It's definitely not viewed as "acceptable".

technicolor-misfit 2008-11-02 03:17:30 PM
Those people aren't typically angry about being called racists and rednecks and gun-totin' Bible-thumpers so much as they're mad about the fact that people make them sound like bad things.

'I ain't no 'racist,' I just don't think no nigras oughta be runnin' our country! and I ain't no Bible-thumpin' holy-roller neither, I just don't think God wants homo's gettin' married!"

The racists, rednecks, and gun-totin' Bible-thumpers further north hate it worse than anybody because they'd like to pretend they're not like the "ignorant hillbillies" in Alabama and Mississippi.

It's upsetting for them to realize there's just not much difference outside of the accent.

HOLY CRAP, I just had the same thought yesterday. While drive to Pittsburgh via 22 I saw confederate flags flying in people's backyard. You freaking live in PENNSYLVANIA, one of the most important states in preserving the union. Huge WTF

I've lived in Alabama my whole life and the racists don't openly display it and it's not viewed as acceptable.

In fact, I've traveled all over the southeast, and that's not the case anywhere as far as I know. No matter where you are, in unknown company even the most aggressive racists will mostly keep quiet to avoid judgement.

That's why so many of them respond so favorably to guys like Limbaugh... He says, right out loud on the radio, the things most of them are afraid of saying at work.

Wow, I never see that even in Alabama... About the most I've ever seen here is a window sticker on a truck or a patch on a cap or something.

Though once, on some back-wood road out in the boonies, I did see a "Bocephus" flag with a confederate sort of design as the backdrop.
