I went down to Captain Tony's
To get out of the heat
I heard a voice call out to me
Son come have a seat
I had to search my memories
As I looked into those eyes
Our lives change like the weather
But a legend never dies
Chorus:
He said I ate the last mango in Paris
Took the last plane out of Saigon
I took the first fast boat to China
And Jimmy there's still so much to be done

I had a third world girl in Buzios
With a pistol in each hand
She always kept me covered
As we moved from land to land

I had a damn good run on Wall Street
With my high fashion model wife
Woke up dry beneath the African sky
Just me and my Swiss Army knife

Chorus:
I ate the last mango in Paris
Took the last plane out of Saigon
I took the first fast boat to China
And Jimmy there's still so much to be done

We shot the breeze for hours
As the sun fell from the sky
And like the sun he disappeared
Before my very eyes

It was somewhere past dark-thirty
As we went back to the head
I read upon the dingy wall
The words the old man said

He said I ate the last mango in Paris
Took the last plane out of Saigon
I took the first fast boat to China
And Jimmy there's still so much to be done

I ate the last mango in Paris
Took the last plane out of Saigon
I took the first fast boat to China
And Jimmy there's still so much to be done

That's why we wander and follow La Vie Dansante

So those of you that don't get it now get the reference.

Son of gun had a life didn't he.

Good night Pirate man.

We had a big party for him on Thursday (it had been planned for a long time), lots of local muscians, food, and most especially BOOZE. He was supposed to be there, but unfortunatly he took a turn and went back in the hospital. He is the last of the really colorful Key Westers, Mel Fisher, Wilhelmina Harvey, and now Captain Tony...all gone. What a life he had...13 children and soooo many stories. Quite a man, he never met a stranger.

I will never forget getting my picture taken with my two girlfriends and Capt. Tony. Soon after the click of the camera, he flicked off our husbands with both of his skinny hands. Two nights later, he shut down the bar so that he and all of the bartenders could see Chesty Love perform at the Garden of Eden. Bless his heart.

RIP Tony. We loved ya, you old perv.

I had the pleasure to live in Key West back in the late 80's, and it was a wild time. Spent many a night in Capt. Tony's. He was a living legend.

RIP, Tony, and may there be strippers in Heaven.

I'll miss him as well - had not seen him the last ten years, but he certainly was "quite the character" as my then GF said. I was there the day after he lost 1/2 the bar in a poker game. (yeah - get off of my lawn).

I only passed through a few times in those days--during summers I sometimes helped run boats from Maine south, and Key West an infrequent destination, but damn Captain Tony's was always a stop.

RIP

I've been to several Buffett concerts, own every album he's put out, and I've been to Capt Tony's to get out of the heat. This news is unfortunate.

Great place down there.

Captain Tony was a charter boat captain, gambler and a gun runner for Cuban mercenaries during the Bay of Pigs invasion. He served as mayor of Key West from 1989 to 1991.

I will never be as cool as this man was.

Seemed interesting until the article mentioned Jimmy Buffet. I knew it was downhill from there

I'll be in Key West next week, so I'm really getting a kick out of these responses.

/Will have to stop by his old bar and raise a beer in his honor.

Every tropical backwater used to have at least one of these guys. I fear they may be a dying breed - unless somehow a new generation of bullshiat artists can somehow amass enough ready capital to buy themselves a corner of paradise in which to drink themselves to death while proving local color for the tourists.

Maybe someday...

You were a legend in your own right, Tony, you'll be sorely missed.

Damn it Buffet sucks. It takes a particular breed of asshole to be into his music.

What breed? The breed that turned Key West from the things that made it famous to what it is today.

The only Buffet that rocks is Warren Buffet. He's cool.

Dear Buffett haters,

Please remember that his last name is spelled with two t's, not one. The same rule applies to Jimmy's distant cousin Warren.

Sincerely,

A Jimmy Buffett Fan

Not to be confused with that movie of a similar title.

I always made a point of stopping for a beer or twelve at Captain Tony's Bar, which is about a block down the road from the "New" Sloppy Joes (1933-present).

The "Old" Sloppy Joe's (during Prohibition) was where Capt. Tony's is now. It was there Hemingway did most of his Key West drinking.

Farewell Tony. So long, it's been good to know ya.
