This, of course is a cover a tune by Joe Jackson. I didn't know that there is a website dedicated to comparing covers vs. originals. This one looks like a runaway for today's SHMHC submission. (new window)

If you listen closely, you can hear a distinct similarity between Joey Belladonna and Joe Jackson's voice. Come to think of it, I've never seen them in the same place at the same time.

Hmmm... you might be on to something.

On this tour they opened for Iron Maiden on their "No Prayer for the Dying" tour. Metal nirvana I tell you. It was at the height of Gulf War I.

ahh yes, from when Scott's hair was in its in between phase. not quite fully shaved, but not the big hair he had in the 80's.
and also before Charlie got his buzzcut.

Joey Belladonna ruined Anthrax for me. Thrash metal with a hair-band singer

John Bush-era Anthrax is the only Anthrax acceptable.

Anthrax was the first band that got me into Metal. Sadly, Anthrax is the last band I would buy anything from ever again. After John Bush left or got kicked out, it just wasn't the same. It became the Scott Ian and his never ending attention whooring, promote my wife's new band, look I am on VH-1, show.

I almost agree but having seen them a few times Joey's voice really holds up well live. For that he garnered a fair amount of respect.

persistence of time is my favorite anthrax album, but I almost always skip this song, It just never worked for me.

These guys are still awesome though.

Seconded. Its not a bad song but Persistence of Time has this dark tension throughout the album, except for this song. It really would have fit better on one of their previous albums.

Fun band, bad singer (in retrospect), really really forgettable lead guitarist (Dan Spitz?), amazingly good drummer.

Charlie rocks.

Well, if you sing badly you can sing badly anywhere.

Joking.

Sort of.

Not really.

Love Anthrax anyway.

I started a temp gig at the publisher of this song recently and heard it playing at a colleague's desk. It took me back to the early 90s. I threw it on repeat for the next couple of hours. Was never a big Anthrax fan, but this song farking rocks. Easily one of the best covers evar. In other news, Joe Jackson is heavily underrated. That is all.

I had no idea it was a cover song. MusicMatch's alarm clock feature has played the Anthrax version to wake me on many occasions.

Thank you subby! I had completely forgotten about that song and that album.

It's going back into the car where it belongs.

And I'm grateful for the reminder that I should listen to much more Joe Jackson than I currently do. The guy has talent to spare, and more musical skill in one hand than I could muster on my best day.

Yeah, We've Come For You All gets a lot of play in my car. But I grew up during the Belladonna era so I'll always have a place in my metal heart for him.

I loved playing rythm guitar along with Among The Living in high school. Skeletons in the Closet, I Am The Law, Indians ... fast/fun tunes
John Bush is a strong singer, but he changed the vibe of the band alot. I found more humor and speed with Belladona era stuff... so i like some of those riffs better. I liked how unusual his voice was.
Frail. Non-threatening.
Saw em open for Iron Maiden on thier "Persistance Of Time" tour. Frank Bello (bass player) was all over the place... he was fun to watch.

I thought it was the 'Can I Play With Madness Tour" But anyways I still have my ticket stub from the show in Pittsburgh (A.J. Palumbo Center/Duquesne University) dated January 31st 1991.

poxic: And I'm grateful for the reminder that I should listen to much more Joe Jackson than I currently do. The guy has talent to spare

Agreed. I've seen him live several times, and he was always mixing it up, bringing something new. Once he did a quieter, "clockwork" sounding arrangement of this tune, and it was good but a little disappointing. "Got the Time" is one of those tunes that sounds best when you hit it with everything you've got. Which is why I love this cover.

Anthrax was my first concert at 15! (w/ Megadeth, Slayer and Alice in Chains)

I've had the fortunate opportunity to see Joe Jackson two times. One was as a trio and the other was on the Night and Day II tour which was like an orchestra of aural orgasms. Joe Jackson is highly underrated!
