He's facing his second bid for the presidency failing, what might be the end of the Republican party as we know it, and his own death in a few years. He might as well be remembered for having a sense of humor.

BearToy: He might as well be remembered for having a sense of humor.

His sense of humor was very evident in his speech at the Al Smith dinner in NYC.

/I L'd OL several times during his speech

Did he just show Palin the bus?

Joe Piscopo is still funnier

LOL @ Palin 2012 T-Shirts.

Well, I will LOL until 2012. Then I will probably cry.

NewportBarGuy [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 01:30:13 AM
I laughed, a lot. You can see the old McCain deep inside as he wanted to smile broadly at the Palin stuff.

Such a shame. Goodnight, funnyman.

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 01:33:37 AM
I watched the second part. Anyone else get the feeling that was a concession?

Sum Dum Gai 2008-11-02 01:34:35 AM
Definitely a great show. And yeah, McCain has a great sense of humor. The Al Smith dinner was fantastic as well.

It surprises me to no end when people say McCain has a great sense of humor.

He's a politician. He knows how to BS people.

And you do know that he didn't write the jokes for the Al Smith dinner? Those jokes are just read and even on paper they're funny because they are topical.

just sayin'

NO REALLY!?!?!?!?!

Christ, you really think people need to be told this still? The difference is the delivery.

Obama had better writers, but I thought McCain's delivery was better at the Al Smith dinner.

And I had to lol at the commemorative plates bit in the first video in the link. That was good.

That being said, Gobama.

screechingbitermonkey [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 02:22:27 AM
McCain does have a good sense of humor, I will admit.

Good for him.

I still want nothing to do with a McCain-Palin administration.

GOBAMA.

Every time Tina Fey does her thing he loses votes. I wonder what Sarah Palin thinks of that skit.

The best part of that video: Free Starbucks Coffee on Tuesday just by telling them you voted.

No mention of Cindy McCain?

That woman freaks me out. I instinctively cringe and my genitals recede.

But then again, she looks a lot like their daughter, who I would ride hard and loud, like I was being chased by wild Indians.

seventypercent [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 03:48:44 AM
The McCain bits on SNL were well-balanced and funny. He did a good job.

I'll never vote for him, of course, but he certainly did himself no harm.

bobbette [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 04:02:04 AM
Funny! I almost liked McCain a little better for it. But I couldn't shake the impression that this is a sad place for his campaign to be in.

Repeating right out loud those rumours about Palin going rogue and sabotaging his campaign to launch her 2012 bid - oof. It was funny, but it sort of confirms that his running mate is trying to use him to run in four years at this point. And McCain appearing on the same stage as Tina Fey just reinforces how much of a joke his campaign is.

The writers gave him good lines - that whole QVC thing was very funny - and he came off as good natured, but the basis of every single joke was "Wow, it's really come to this."

Is this the way for a serious candidate who actually thinks he has a shot at the White House to go out? No, it's not. It's more of a return to the old McCain. And in doing a self-deprecatory, funny little sketch, and in taking a swipe at Palin at the same time, I think it's an admission that his internal polling and his ground organization might be even weaker than the signs already point to them being.

That, or the friendly side of Mac is a desperate attempt to get swing voters and soft Republicans to feel good enough about him in the next few days to turn out without much of a GOTV effort. Could be a bit of both.

Well, no matter who you support, Go vote.org (All the info on where to vote and what ID to bring.) Plus with free doughnuts, ice cream AND coffee I don't see how you can say no. That's like a $7 value. And, you know, democracy liberty freedom. blah blah blah. 1000 calories of delicious fat, maybe more if you put cream and sugar in the coffee. That's what I'm talking about.

/Canada would have like 95% turnout if there were bribes from Tim Hortons or Starbucks. Next election, I want bribes!

Actually, I like the Smith dinner routine better than his SNL routine. Probably because the Smith dinner was written by his speechwriters to his voice, while in the opening, he's reading a bit that doesn't cater to his style or delivery.

Out of all those who made appearances, Palin actually had the best delivery.

After watching the WU clip, I take it back. McCain's delivery and timing were great there.

That was darn funny.

My hope is that after the election, we can all get behind whomever is the president and give them our support - and give them heck - making sure they do what's best for our country. I know it's a pipe dream, but let's not forget we are the United States of America.

/McCain supporter, but will give Obama my support if he wins

They're not on stage making jokes about it. But I am curious, are they on a comparable level of "democracy"?

Ratbert42 2008-11-02 07:20:15 AM
The sad thing is that he did a better job delivering the lines than Affleck.

Unobtanium 2008-11-02 07:22:24 AM
What's sadder than all of these skits is the choice we face: A worn-out veteran who would probably be better as SecNav than President, a socialist rock-star who has no idea what he's in for, a former Republican Federal prosecutor who's now on the Lunatic Fringe of even the Libertarian Party, or my (thankfully) former Congresswoman who's even more a lunatic the other way.

I hate having to vote AGAINST something, which has pretty much been the case for the last several Federal elections.

I still crack up everytime I see McCain in Wedding Crashers.

Glad to hear it. I am voting for Obama, but if McCain wins, I will support him. I just wished he hadn't picked Palin. I find that to be troublesome, to say the least.

And it was good to watch the McCain I used to like.

suebhoney 2008-11-02 07:25:01 AM
I only saw the "news" skit and didn't quite get where there was concession in what he said. What specifically gives some that idea? Not that it couldn't be true, I just didn't see it nor hear it.

I'm sure he sees the writing on the wall, there really isn't much he can do in two days to turn his campaign around. If he had had control over his campaign and run it in the fashion that has kept him in the Senate all these years, he'd have had a shot, but embracing the slimy part of the GOP did him in and I, for one, am glad.

The only thing that could've been funnier, was SNL having him do a skit of Marlon Brando, ala, "I could've been a contender, I could've been somebody."

falseidols 2008-11-02 07:26:02 AM
"I'm a maverick: a Republican without money" had me rolling.

There are a few of us voting for McCain that are not your typical right wing nut jobs.

/I know at least four

msannomalley [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 07:29:03 AM
Why couldn't McCain be funny like this during the campaign???? Maybe if he would have been himself and not sold out to the neo-con and Bushies in charge of his campaign, he might not be down in the polls.

I think that John McCain would actually do more good and serve his country better if he stayed in the Senate. The neo-con wing of the party who run it now, don't like him and don't want him running the show. Unfortunately, he let the wrong people run his campaign. If he were elected President, *gasp* the Republican party might draw in more moderates!

I'm not much into conspiracies, but it makes you wonder.

Softens_hands_while_you_do_the_dishes 2008-11-02 07:30:49 AM
Curious how the Republicans can come out and face the music. Where's O-shiathead? Why so serious?

DementedPants 2008-11-02 07:31:54 AM
I laughed hysterically at both clips.

Still wouldn't vote for him, even if I hadn't already voted, but it's nice to see him basically being coherent, which he wasn't in the debates.
