who would have guessed "boopie do doopie do doopie diddle de dee", could have come out sounding so good when it was all put together.

Ah, the good old JP-8. One of the most versatile analog synthesizers made.

I knew a guy a few years ago who played in a band and owned one, he'd have to fiddle with the thing between songs because it would invariably go out of tune. But now that they have a software synth for it, no need to lug around this heavy piece of sensitive equipment.

Just need a laptop and a MIDI controller and you're good to go.
What do the rest of you prefer? Analog or digital?

Can't wait for this to come out.

As for the new version in the performance video from the story, it's not really new. 'New' would be the acoustic version arranged by Warren back in the early 90s. That was good.

which is more sad?
a rose which perceives it's bloom as fading?
or the blissful ignorance of such a rose, never
realizing it's sustenance was manure, and though
pleasing to the eye, could never mask the stench
from a true gardener.

/while i pity these old queens, at least they play
real instruments.
//that producer should be shot with a ball of his own
faeces.

I don't care what anyone says. I like heavy metal...Pantera, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, etc., but Duran Duran is awesome. I guess it's true that whatever you listened to in high school never grows old.

Duran Duran. Classic. My head hurts even more than when the local classic rock station started playing REM.

carmody 2008-11-02 09:36:14 AM
Sorry, ZAZ, but REM and Duran Duran both produced some fine pop music during their heyday in the '80s. You think the crapola on the radio today will hold up as well?

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-11-02 09:39:39 AM
They had some good pop. But I don't think they rise to the "classic" rank, and more importantly music that was popular when I was in high school can not be "classic."

"Rio" is a better album than anything released this year.

Growing up in the 80's and having three younger sisters it was impossible escape from these guys. As much crap as I gave my sisters about Duran Duran, they kind of grew on me. John Taylor plays some really nice bass lines on "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio".

Dear haters - I think the fact that we're all commenting on this song 26 years later speaks volumes. We're not exactly seeing Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" get a Classic Albums episode...

/Yes, that was the Billboard #1 single of 1982
// And yes, I'm horrified too.

considering you have an ICP-themed handle, I question your musical taste.

/seriously, get out more.

I wisht he following albums would get the "classic albums" treatment:
"Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield
"Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits
"Aqualung" by Jethro Tull
"Fragile" by Yes
"Selling England...", "the lamb" or "a trick of the tail" by Genesis
"swordfishtrombones" or "rain dogs" by tom waits
"the stone roses" by the stone roses
"Low" or "heroes" by David Bowie

Different generations perceive different things as 'classic'. Rio is definitely 'classic'. As are The Stone Roses, Nevermind, What's the Story Morning Glory, Achtung Baby, The Bends, and several other albums considerably more recent than Rio.

Will this be released in 5.1 Surround or DTS or what-not?

I always find the technical aspects of 80's production fascinating ,as it was the last great era of analog recording.

Elvis Costello as muzak in my hotel elevator. I nearly cried.

Duran Duran has as much edge as Wonderbread

Unhip1 [TotalFark] 2008-11-03 03:06:10 AM
My contenders for "classic" treatment:
There are fascinating stories behind each of the following...

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette
The Jam - All Mod Cons
Neil Young - Trans
The Replacements - Let It Be
The Stone Roses
U2 - War
XTC - Black Sea
Television - Adventure

I disagree. "Classic" implies canonic or timeless. The fact that you've lobbed in The Stone Roses with Oasis shows a lack of scope. And Nirvana? Just because something sells well doesn't make it automatically "classic." I'd say Nevermind and What's The Story Morning Glory are more "dated" than "classic."
Props to Duran Duran...you have to admit, they've endured, and even the younglings know their name and melodies.

/"Save a Prayer" FTW

I'm still pissed that "Hold Back The Rain" got completely bastardized on the remastered version of Rio. Luckily someone made an MP3 off the vinyl. Still a great record though.

How so? HBTR is my favorite song on that record. what did they do to it? I haven't heard it.

Duran Duran is universally awesome.

I only admitted that I liked Duran Duran all along about three years ago hahaha everyone I know was stunned.

"But ... but ... I thought you said ..."

"I lied! I couldn't like anything that was popular!"

I like all those except replace Low with Scary Monsters. That is Bowie's true classic. Unbelievable performances. I still crank Teenage Wildlife and howl like a wolf in a trap.

The Stone Roses first album is sheer brilliance. I could never understand how they did something like that and then faded until I saw them perform live on their second album's tour. A disjointed band with a singer who could simply not stay in tune.

/still love that album

woot! woot! [high five]

hmmm i listened to "scary monsters" once... thought it was alright... kind of like "lodger", some great songs, some not so much...

my real fav. is "heroes", "low" comes close, then "stationtostation".
and i have a greatest hits 1969-1974 that's pretty good.
oh and his two live 70's albums...
i like "stationtostation" live 1978 better than the studio version!

i listened to "stone roses" debut on amazon. it was pretty good.
i shall get it for real soon i shall think. real catchy stuff.... that track that flows into itself backwards that segued into another track is pretty neat.

I also liked Duran Duran alot.
I think I had got all their LPs back then.

bp2.blogger.com

This album just made them cooler at the time plus it restarted Robert Palmer's career.
Duran Duran with a harder edge.

This is also a classic in my book.
