Oddly enough that is probably untrue. You would be shocked to learn how much some of those guys make.

Anyway, it's the locals that are on strike.

/IA and not particularly proud.

No he's not. I'd bet he has to join because he essentially does some of their work, moving equipment and the like. Union probably wouldn't let him move the mic around the stage if he wasn't a member.

I understand your point for most artists but Neil Young can do whatever he likes to any piece of gear at any time. If he asked they would allow him to load out the entire show single hand, take the keys from a Teamster and drive the truck to the next gig and load the gear right back in.

And it has nothing to do with having a card.

His crew love him more than any I have ever seen and the locals worship him like the god he is.

(but he would be far to stoned to do any of that so it's a moot point)

I've loved Neil Young for most of my life.

That ended a few weeks ago when I saw that tickets for his current tour are $250 for the good seats. Yeah, who needs corporate sponsorship when you can rape your fans, right Neil? Keep up that "man of the people" act.

Maybe he's saving for a vacation with the Eagles and the rest of the greedy old bastards.

What a shame.

At the end of the article, they mention a new release- Neil live acoustic in 1968. That's going to be something.

When Neil was young, he had the magic.

I understand the sentiment, but $250 isn't exactly an insane ticket price. I don't know what venue that is at and where the seat is, but what were the cheapest tickets available for that show?

There are so many factors that aren't fair to place 100% at the artists feet. If they want to play small venues mostly, I'm not going to complain...good for them. If there is greater demand for tickets, they get to choose between charging a higher price up front or just letting scalpers do that...I know I'd rather pay a bunch for a ticket from an artist than a scalper.

The other thing I've noticed is that these factors tend to depend on age and wealth of the fan base. My parents go see some pop geezers and pay more for a pair of tickets than I'll pay to see a dozen big name acts.

I get a lot more pissed at the ticketmaster insanity than the face price of tickets...

I have a lot of respect for Neil Young. He makes no apologies for what he does, for who he is. He is incredibly talented and has made some of the best, and some of my favorite, music ever. Hearing about things like this just reinforces my opinion.

As for 250.00 ticket prices...I would gladly pay that to spend a couple hours watching Neil perform.

wildcardjack 2008-10-31 12:36:57 AM
I wonder how many members of his audience wouldn't cross a picket line.

As it is they can refund or reschedule, but he could have screwed a bunch of people out of their ticket money. I guess it's echos of my grandfather, but I wouldn't cross a picket line unless I was management in that company.

If they weren't that much, someone arsehole would just snap them all up and make them cost that much anyway.

It's the ticketing system that needs an overhaul, you can't really blame the artist for the promoters' greed. Too much.

Lyrics from a Neil song on Hawks and Doves (circa 1982?)

Im proud to a union man
I make those meetings when I can, yeah
I pay my dues ahead of time
When the benefits come Im last in line, yeah.

Im proud to be a union man.

Every fourth friday at 10 am
Theres a local meeting of the a f of m, yeah!

This meeting will now come to order
Is there any new business?

Yeah, I think live music are better
Bumper stickers should be issued.

What was that?

live music is better bumper stickers
Should be issued

The gentleman says
live music is better bumper stickers
Should be issued
All in favor of what he said
Signify by sayin ay

Ay!

If, however, you are opposed
Signify by saying no.

Im proud to be a union man.

I didn't start listening to Neil Young until later in life. After I turned 30 (born in 71). I still listen to more Garcia than anything, but Neil Young is 100% rock-n-roll!

Classic albums that should be in every music lovers collection, in no particular order (impossible to rank).

The thing with Neil is that even his crappy stuff is multitudes better than most other artists.

Addressing Trans, one of the main motivating factors for this experimental album was because of his son, who has cerebral palsy. Neil found that his son responded to him better when he was using the vocoder. So really, I think Neil made this more for his son (and himself) than he did for the general public. It must be awesome to be such a badass that you can be that experimental and not even take a hit......at all.

$75 for floor tickets a couple of weeks ago. unbelievable show. I was more of a casual fan before then, he has now risen to diety status.

I was fortunate enough to see Neil Young solo - just a chair, a guitar, and a harmonica. In a real turn of century theater (think old guys from Muppets). Let me tell you, it takes some amazing talent for a single performer to make the hair on your neck stand on end. I was only a casual fan of his work with CSN (Deja Vu) and maybe some of the commercial high notes from his solo output. But that night made me a true believer. Only his erratic 80's output isn't worth worshiping.

/tickets were like $40. 1999 or so.
//bar tab was three times that and a hell of lot less fulfilling.

Henry Holland 2008-10-31 09:21:33 PM
I had tickets for the canceled show, GA floor. Very bummed he canceled, but WTF was up with his booking agent? FWIU, the union has been on strike for years at the Forum against the church that owns it now, it only became an issue yesterday?!? I know people are desperate to play places not owned by Clear Channel and all that, but a little due diligence from Neil's people would have been nice. The setlist looked great but by the time he comes around for the "makeup" gig(s), it'll have changed again.

Why is everybody mentioning all his mellow crap? What about Cortez the Killer, Down By The River, Cowgirl In The Sand, Rockin' In The Free World, Like A Hurricane etc. etc.? Like my friend e-mailed me "Damn! I was hoping for some intense guitar jams...", that's so true.

/Keep on rockin' Neil

Yes actually. I guess you could say that I liked it in the same vein as The Honeydrippers, although I like Led Zeppelin much more. I prefer Neil's rock stuff the most, but I can enjoy most of what he has put out.

Henry Holland

I too like his rock jams the most, but I love his more mellow efforts. I saw him in a theater setting (Fox Theater in St. Louis) and I got the best of both worlds. He did an 1.5 hour acoustic set, took a short break, then did a freakin' awesome electric set for another 1.5 hours. It was 3 hours of constant goosebumps. I could hardly contain myself.

For some odd reason Trans was a fave of mine in HS when it came out. I was a big Young fan already but dug the new sound.

With Everybody's Rockin I gave up and never payed much attention to him for the next 24 years....Untill a good buddy of mine (the Lighting Designer for the tour) invited me to see him in NYC last year. I have to admit he killed. Really killed.

Seeing his guitar rig up close was the best part. That was some freaky shiat. Radio Shack parts, skateboards on strings, an assorted group of antique amps and crap. Pretty impressive in a low tech, Rube Goldberg kind of way.

His tour bus was cool too. I loved the old Studebakers mounted on top.

Meeting him was awesome but Jesus, how high can a guy get?

Oh, and he played your login which the crew all commented on. Aparently he does not do that often.

Overall the best concert I had ever seen played by a white dude.

Yes, it is. I don't remember what I spent on my Neil Young ticket last year, but I do remember I spent $100 on merchandise and it was more than my ticket. I was very close to the stage, the sound was great andI drove 2 hours to get there, blah, blah, blah

And Neil, if you think your roadies are being screwed, pay them yourself.

RIP, Bruce Berry

I saw Neil Young play in his hometown of Winnipeg the other day, the local newspaper, the Winnipeg Free Press was on strike, halfway through the concert he gets all grumpy mentioning how his dad used to be the sports editor for the Free Press and how things were simpler back in those days.
