First, the Slayer thread, and now this.

Are we going for a Sucktastic Bands from the 80's trifecta here?

I came here to post a picture of the kid on "Beavis & Butthead" who wore a Winger shirt. Can't believe it was the very f*rst p*st.

That would make sense if Slayer sucked, but they don't.

I think more people think of Stuart when they hear about Winger than Seventeen.

Headbangers never gave a damn about Winger or any of those big hair posers anyway.

Their third album, released as hair metal was on the wain, was actually quite good. This was the single from it, though there were several other pretty decent tracks as well.

I saw Kip Winger acoustic at the Rock 100.5 Kegs and Eggs St. Patrick's Day party this year and he was really good. I had VERY low expectations since I was never a big Winger fan but he totally won me over.

/Down Incognito and Easy Come Easy Go haven't left my ipod since.

Kip is actually pretty cool about it all; have you seen the youtube clip where he changes the lyrics and sings "She's only THIRTY-FIVE!!!"

puddleonfire 2008-10-29 11:12:29 PM
Headbangers don't give a flying fark about Winger!!!
Next you're gonna threaten us with Trixter unplugged or some gay shiat like that.

I went to see Kip Winger
He said in my day we knew how to party
Bands today... come on, not hardly
He had a backup singer (doo dee doo doo)
He said the metal scene is a disgrace
But I ain't got no dog in that race
Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy
Go near an open window and that'll be the end of me
Don't despair your mother loves you
Don't be proud because she has to

Winger took a lot of crap because they were the most visible.

But they all were good musicians. One (the drummer) is a associate professor at Berklee College of Music.

At least they weren't:

Trixter
Warrant
Slaughter
House of Lords
Kingdom Come
Poison
Danger Danger
Keel

who all should have taken the heat that Winger seemed to get in spades.

I think what hurt them initially was the theme and not-so-deep lyrics of their first hit (2nd single), Seventeen.

Otherwise as you said they are all great musicians. Reb Beach is an outstanding guitarist who has played with the likes of Alice Cooper, Dokken, Whitesnake and of course his solo work. Rod Morganstein is a hugely respected drummer that drummed for Dixie Dregs. Kip Winger is a diverse and talented musician who produces music as well. What happened to Paul Taylor?

Who the hell cares what happened to Paul Taylor? He played in Winger! Nuff said.

"Seventeen" only went one notch higher than their first single, the vastly superior "Madelaine"--#26 on U.S. charts per Wikipedia.

/still play the hell out of "Madelaine" on the iPod
//love the intro

Met Reb Beach in a guitar shop in Pittsburgh around 1990, just after they went on MTV Unplugged. Solos in Headed for a Heartbreak are awesome.

I had no idea Madelaine went that high, that is interesting I actually purchased the cd when I first heard Madelaine. They were relatively unknown at that point.

Maybe it was the Seventeen video that really broke them open (as oppose to the US chart rating). Madelaine was not aired on MTV nearly as much as Seventeen was.

I love Winger and love Slayer.
Figure that one out.
