They were playing karaoke singers. She at least was supposed to be a total amateur. I liked that movie and thought the scene with the father and daughter singing and reconciling was pretty cool.

Going to have to agree. The movie wasn't really my thing, but the scene made a lot of sense in context of the movie, and the duet itself was fine.

And I used to like "The Girl Is Mine" as a kid. Wonder if it completely sucks now? Time to youtube it.

Man you need to get your facts straight, the best duet in history is:
WIlliam Shatner and Joe Jackson, Common People.

An easy mistake to make.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.

Yeah but Maya Rudolph and her brother wrote that movie. I think it was supposed to be more of a satire than it turned out to be. I doubt she could really take anything that seriously...especially Karoake. That and Paul Giamatti doing his "K speak" and picking up a "shadow." Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

THIS. Huey Lewis was excellent playing a traveling karaoke hustler who suckers people into betting against him in a karaoke contest and takes their money.

And I don't think the song was terrible. Paltrow also did a decent cover of "Bette Davis Eyes" in that movie, but the a cappella version of Freebird at the end was one of the best songs from that movie.

Outside of that movie, some my favorite duets:
- "Gulf Coast Highway" with Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson (that shiat'll make you cry)
- "I Won't Back Down" with Johnny Cash and Tom Petty. My wife heard this and was like "Johnny Cash is awesome, but that other guy who does the backing is terrible", and I had to explain to her that "the other guy" wrote the song.
- "Waiting for Tonight" with Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks

I have to agree about "Opposites Attract" being on the list. Also, "Crazy in Love" should be on there, since Beyonce can sing, but Jay-Z can't rap for shiat.

Bono and Frank Sinatra

Both of Sinatra's Duets albums were a disgrace. Pathetic that the first one was the biggest selling album Sinatra ever released.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics.

It was good enough that she was offered a record contract.

luckily, she was smart enough to say no.BoringNickName: - "I Won't Back Down" with Johnny Cash and Tom Petty. My wife heard this and was like "Johnny Cash is awesome, but that other guy who does the backing is terrible", and I had to explain to her that "the other guy" wrote the song.

I've been saying that for a long time. The original was a very good song, but Shatner's speech-singing added the necessary level of contempt and disgust at the girl to the lyrics that just didn't make it into the original.

I would vote that duet for one of the creepier ones out there. A father and daughter singing about having sex crosses the creepy line. Well, it could have been worse: they could have sung Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

mofomisfit 2008-10-29 04:54:41 PM
Maybe they weren't referring to the song in the context of whatever movie you're talking about, but in the context of a single. Because it was released as a single and that single is farking horrible.

This thread would be entirely meaningless to me if it were not for the chance to quote that movie, read other people quoting it, and seeing that above picture with the ax. If it were a Phil Collins thread, I'd hope that someone would post the pic of him pointing at the camera/mirror.

I'll stick up for Huey and the News forever.

Back in the 80's Bruce Hornsby and The Range couldn't make the double bill because they got snowed in at Seattle, so Huey said to the audience, "That's not fair for you guys to get shorted." so they played about every song they've ever done.
It was a 2 and a half hour concert. It was awesome!
That's class.

Whistler36 [TotalFark] 2008-10-29 06:36:28 PM
I think you have to define what makes a bad duet. It's a given that if one or both of the singers can't (sing, that is) then the duet is bad. Assuming that, then

a) The song doesn't fit one or both of their styles.

b) The song's content is creepy with both of them. You can't imagine these two people singing this song too each other.

c) The two's styles don't fit - Bono and Sinatra, e.g. Both fine singers, just not good together.

That being said, I like GP singing. Everying time I have heard her sing I really liked her. So no more GP hating, or I'll start singing. Then you'll hear pain.

/I Like Huey also.
