Slayer?

I think I almost remember them.

At first I read that as Sylar and got excited because it was about Heroes and then I reread it and got depressed because it was about a shiatty band.

I'd just like to say I have been trying to work Raining Blood into every conversation long before there was a video game where you can "play" it.

A Fark thread for favorite Valentine's Day Love song: Raining Blood.
Poll for most romantic music to play for an anniversary: Raining Blood.
A red-cross airplane explodes at 30,000ft: Definitely Raining Blood.

Everything up until Seasons in the Abyss was essentally the same album over and over. Granted it was a very GOOD album but I think a 'guitar god' needs to be able to play with a bit more diversity. The albums after SITA seemed really uninspired to me.

Slayer is a great band and certainly one of THE most influential bands in metal but I don't think they're the 'almighty metal gods' people claim them to be as far as songwriting is concerned.

slayer's new album to be entitled eternal deathness murder death spiral sorrow star of the agony abyss.

how seriously can you take a band that has cds titled--

1. hell awaits
2. live undead
3. south of heaven
4. god hates us all
5. divine intervention
6. christ illusion

if you are too see that thrash metal spewing off about death and atheism is the SAME shiat as emo kids whining about girlfriends... then well..you're stupid. being great musicians is one thing but CONSTANTLY, over and over hearing about god and how much you hate him in your music is farking pathetic.

Seeing as Slayer is one of the most influential metal bands ever, I'd say many people take them seriously. Yeah they talk a lot about God et al, but they do it to sell albums. Your guaranteed to get rich if you piss off the religious right. Slayer does it better than anyone else, plus they do play some great metal.

"REIGNING BLOOD" DVD with the actual blood raining on them ? My favorite part is Lombardo , you can see him struggling to keep up towards the end. That guy is insane. I can't even keep up a Slayer beat for more than 2 songs with my index finger against the table, and this guy does it for more than 1 hour an a half

Slayer-haters? That's very retarded. You either like the genre or you don't. Otherwise that's like saying you love red meat but think filet-mignon is overrated

Try it sometime. It doesn't make sense out of the context but if you're really into metal and at a concert and you're willing to try, there's almost nothing like it.

It's a result of the music. It gets in your blood and pumps you up. Now, multiply that by ten thousand other fans and you had better find a way to release the energy. Most pits are the perfect way to let it out in a somewhat constructive way. In other words, it's dancing for a bunch of metal heads that can't really dance.

The other band he was in (Grip Inc.) had some insane drum stuff thanks to him. Otherwise a rather so-so band. Definitely not Slayer.

I have ALL their albums up until SITA if that means anything. I rarely listen to them anymore. DIM and GHUA gave me the 'old Metallica vs new Metallica' impression of course it isn't quite so drastic. The newer albums seem like they're just 'phoned-in' to me. Boring.

nice attempt at a troll. But i'll bite. It was argued that South of Heaven was alienating fans who were endeared to their previous albums. SITA was more of a mainstream album yet they explored the heaviness/morbidity of their genre far deeper than any previous album (e.g. expendable youth, blood red, etc). Undisputed Attitude was a great break from their antichristian lyrics. Their other albums continue an antichristian theme. If you can penalize them for anything is for maintaining a theme. As for their influence and musical standard, they have NEVER failed to deliver an above decent album.

/so to summarize: fark you.

Peter_Veal 2008-10-30 02:54:59 AM
Well any album they did without Dave Lombardo is definitely "meh". Divine Intervention is definitely the standout of that period, but nothing can touch the Reign In Blood/Seasons in the Abyss combo. South Of Heaven has some stellar songs, and some crappy ones too, so I think they used the lessons learned on it to craft their masterful SITA.

As for Slayer's subject matter, yeah they're Antichristian in a way, but I have always associated Slayer with War. Their "satanic" lyrics are kinda done hamfistedly, like they watched too many horror movies. When they do the War songs, they really get the point across.

craigdamage 2008-10-30 07:08:11 AM

Which ones on South of Heaven are "crappy"?

For MANY years I have regarded Reign,Seasons and South as the high water marks of American metal. I certainly believe Reign In Blood is the most superb of the three but the other two are great but just not quite as perfect as Reign.

I would maybe go so far as to say South of Heaven has one or two "filler" sounding tracks but I really don't think they are "crappy"

This reminds me of something that happened to me this week. I'll share the story with you farkers. I hope you like it.

So earlier this week, I get talked into signing up for Facebook by my best friend from high school. So I do and I start looking for other people from high school that I knew. I find an old buddy of mine that, back in the day, was really into Maiden/Sabbath/Dio etc., but especially Judas Priest. I was not into the scene back then (I later came to my senses during my college/post college years). But even back then, I always suspected Rob Halford was gay (nttawwt) and even suggested so to my buddy, which pretty much resulted in him kicking my ass. So in later years, when Rob came out of the closet, I always wanted to vindicate myself. But I hadn't seen hide nor hair of my buddy since graduation. So now that I finally found him, I invited him for that dumb friend thing you have to do and sent him one message: "I freakin' told you Rob Halford was gay!" So a day later I get a response: "Yeah, well I told you Fine Young Cannibals sucked, so I guess that makes us even." Ouch. I forgot that I thought they were a good band back then, but 20 years later, my buddy still remembered.
