Simon will always be very special to me, for reasons which are best left to the imagination.

Yay! First submission, first green-light! Happy birthday Simon!

I share a birthday with a Taylor brother.

That's all I can contribute to this thread.

I never could figure it out either, and same with Union of the Snake, and New Moon on Monday, but now I'm starting to think, maybe he has a reflex for a union of his snake in a new moon, and today happens to be Monday. Maybe we just had to look at that as some sort of twisted trilogy.

Anyway, happy birthday to Simon Le Bon, or as we call him here in English, Simon The Bon.

Lets look at the words ...

The reflex is an only child, he's waiting in the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover isn't that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does leaves you answered with a Question mark

I think "the reflex" is the nickname of some confusing kid in the park at night looking for treasure and four leaf clovers.

I'd always been told that the "reflex" was a euphemism for ejaculation by the TASCO guys who did the lights and sound for them in the 80s, but can ya' trust a roadie?

Who, judging by those lyrics, is smoking some DYNAMITE weed.

Maybe it means an erection. Until you get to the third line.
Nah, still doesn't make sense.

I was just thinking about him yesterday. Perhaps it was just a reflex.

Seven and the Ragged Tiger sucks donkey balls, just as it did back in '84. But the first LP and Rio are still dynamite.

Simon Le Bon, Madonna, Grandmaster Flash, Thurston Moore are all 50 this year...

Ok, now that was funny.

Liked singing his songs.
I always seems to be able to hit his notes.

And a bonus of their concerts,
always a ton of HOT girls around
and now, a ton of MILFS.

I'm sure Simon had his fun with them
as I did.

I know what "Hungry Like the Wolf" is about.

But I'm not telling.

He may be older and flabbier, but my goodness! I still want him to make me walk funny.

I have always hated Duran Duran with a passion. My little sister listened to both their albums plus the 347 remix versions non-stop through the 80's.

Oh Simon... I was so distraught when I learned of his boat accident! Almost as distraught as I was when he got married. How could he not have wanted to wait for ME???

And Limahl, man I had such a crush on that guy back in 1984!

February 1984--Duran Duran, fourth row, Brendan Byrne Arena (now Izod Center), NJ. I screamed for Simon so much that I had no voice for three days. Happy birthday, Simon.

My sis was at that show, however she was waaaaaay in the farking nose-bleed seats. She took pictures... they were absolutely worthless!

In The Reflex video? I, like, knew the guy in the crowd shot? Who was dancing on his chair? And it was, like, totally shot at Maple Leaf Gardens? In my hometown?

Sigh.

I miss me some '80s...

Anyone that calls Duran Duran ghey has no farking clue what they are talking about. Case in point: Their guitarist after Andy Taylor was Warren Cuccarullo. Not only was he with the band LONGER than Andy "The Quitter" Taylor, but he was also with Frank Zappa throughout the 70's and early 80's, not to mention a founding member of Missing Persons with two other Zappa alumni Dale & Terry Bozzio.

Duran Duran was an extremely important band, not just a bunch of talentless poofs. Just because they were stylized and pretty doesn't mean they weren't a great farking band. They had excellent timing by breaking in the 80's, and blazed the trail for several bands to come. Whether you like them or not, they made history and continued to make great music up until they let Timbaland get his paws on production.

Listen to the solo on Ordinary World and tell me Warren doesn't rip on the guitar!

I tend to agree. Duran Duran made every attempt to NOT be particularly masculine. But that was the style, and I would have done it, too, for that kind of money. "The world thinks I'm gay? WTF cares? Hookers! Blow! Tonight, I'm gonna wrap my Lamborghini around a tree lulz!"

/likes DD in doses. Union of the Snake, FTW!
//also, New Moon on Monday, for the extra point
///damnit, now I gotta find Duran Duran on the iPod. Thanks subby,. Also, headphones...no way I'm getting caught listening to it

Sebastian 2008-10-28 11:50:07 AM
I loves me some Duran Duran. Seen them in concert multiple times and each time was great. Simon always had lots of energy and stage presence.

I've seen them with both the original line-up and with Warren on guitar. IMHO, Warren is a better player, but seeing the original line-up again was fun.

Loud_Mouth_Soup 2008-10-28 11:52:48 AM
Yes, Warren is a guitar god, and sadly is now a 9/11 Truther Wack Job. So disappointed in him...

/Dec 9, Air Canada Centre
//at least the 11th time I can think of seeing them
///will now have seen every 'line up' of the band live

Loud_Mouth_Soup 2008-10-28 11:54:37 AM
Oh, and happy birthday, Simon John Charles.

kivelo 2008-10-28 12:29:49 PM
I always assumed "The Union of the Snake" was about male homosexual love, or at least the temptation to partake thereof. The pistol/penis/snake metaphors get a lot of play in pop/rock lyrics.

And "The Reflex" is, of course, a penis ("Every little thing the reflex does / Leaves you answered with a question mark" = in other words, did I really just bang that disease-ridden whore?).

Advanced Emo 2008-10-28 12:38:27 PM
Ah, Simon. Hard to believe I've adored him for over half his life now. I've seen him flub lyrics and trip onstage more times than I can count.

I wish I knew how to quit you.

/He claimed in concert that The Reflex was "about a little friend of mine WITH A REALLY BIG DICK"
//Which I guess means it's about Warren.

I recently saw a video bootleg of DD playing on New Years Eve 1982 for MTV. They were farking awesome.

/Martha Quinn was hot.

I always loved DD, but couldn't go see them because mom thought I was too young (late grade school). I saw them for the Astronaut tour and they were awesome. Really good performers putting on a great show.

my girlfriend got me to go to a Duran Duran show on their 'Astronaut' tour a few years ago. they were surprisingly good.

Also, there were plenty of cute girls (not just cougars) in the audience all dressed up, which I always consider a plus.
