The fabulously beautful planet Bethselamin is now so worried about the cumulative erosion by ten billion visiting tourists a year that any net imbalance between the amount you eat and the amount you excrete whilst on the planet is surgically removed from your bodyweight when you leave: so every time you go to the lavatory there it is vitally important to get a receipt.

Apparently you've never seen Caribbean beach sand. I hear it's supposed to grant you eternal life; as opposed to normal sand, which only adds 10 years.

Too bad Grenada's bankrupt. The former prime minister Keith Mitchell left less than $30 in the nation's treasury. They don't have any money to pay police or anything.

kiss it goodbye.

Shvetz 2008-10-26 11:59:35 PM
Let me clarify: Keith Mitchell stole all the money out of the treasury. Bush had some plans to extradite him, but apparently wasn't serious about it.

So the locals are basically shooting themselves in the foot. Stealing the sand from the beaches to build, to attract tourists to beaches that no longer exist. Nice.

So...they're not just stealing a few beaches, but from ALL OVER the Caribbean? But then where's all the sand going? How do you steal sand, and then how do you get it off the island?

This is just so weird. It's gotta be more than just a few guys with dump trucks. You'd need container ships, dredges, all kinds of shiat...something sounds like corrupt governments and connivance of the US.

Well, according to TFA:

"Caribbean round grains, favored in creating smooth surfaces for plastering and finishing, are being hauled away by the truckload late at night. On some islands not much bigger than Manhattan, towns and ecologically sensitive areas are now exposed to tidal surges and rough seas...."

So that meanst This:

But seriously, $200/cu yard? Just filling up a pickup would yield $600 right there. Yeah I see the temptation. You could pay for your house by carting away... a sand dune.

and no one hears heavy equipment doing this?

Great Gonzo 2008-10-27 08:58:24 AM
>>>One of the region's largest sand thefts targeted Jamaica, where nearly 100 truckloads were swiped from private property in the northwest, exposing protected mangroves and a limestone forest to wind and waves.

Roughly 706,000 cubic feet of sand were taken in late July, enough to fill roughly 10 Olympic-sized pools, said Jamaica Mines Commissioner Clinton Thompson, who suspects government officials were involved.

"I was surprised at the amount," he said. "This one could not have been stolen without persons knowing about it."

This is actually a huge problem in Jamaica, an island I frequent several times a year. The problem is the Spanish developers, in conjunction with the seriously corrupt Jamaican politicians, are trying to turn Jamaica into Puerto Rico... and it highly sucks arse. The huge abortion-looking resorts are not eco-friendly and are using up the last of Jamaica's public beaches. I would imagine that the sand is being swiped to make the concrete. Because the motto there is: Welcome to Jamaica, we love our concrete.

Pave Paradise and put up a parking lot.

Build a nice high rise to get a view of the missing beach.

Pretty normal human behavior.

why don't they just import some sand from beaches that don't matter like New Jersey?

I remember playing "Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego" as a kid, and wondering how she could possibly steal the Oklahoma Panhandle. Is this kinda like that?

Airwolf 2008-10-27 12:58:14 PM
The first time I visited Puerto Rico in 1972 the beaches were pretty nice. I've been back a dozen or more times over the years and the beaches are more polluted and have less sand each time. One of my favorite beaches was sandy with lots of seashells, but on my last visit there was little sand and no shells at all.

/Puerto Ricans are slobs.
