Why are we getting all anti-consumerist over Halloween? for FSM's sake, let the kids gorge on candy once a year. You want to go after a blatantly consumerist holiday? Then do something about Valentine's Day!!

Didn't you hear? Attacking consumerism is the cool thing to do now. Even Republicans are going all out against people buying unnecessary things...

oh, wait... $150,000 for clothes? and she didn't even wear them? crap, nevermind.

Taking it back?? I thought they CREATED it, what with the competition and the spoiling and one-upman-ship in the subdivision, ng'hey.

Yes, because the barometer of economic success is measured on parking availability. My local shopping center has the worst parking situation, but yet, most people walk around there no shopping bags.

This is as good a time as any to brag up on my weird kid's costume this year! Farkers said so many nice things about her costume last year that she decided to be Zombie Tinkerbell this year.

She (and her rat) won the costume contest in our small town parade today! Her prize was $25, which was 5X what her cheap-ass mom spent on her outfit.

We don't call it 'going green' or 'anti-consumerism', but my kids have grown up with a tightwad mom. If we can't find it at a garage sale or Goodwill, we don't need it.

New pictures in my profile of the before and after.

Oh, it's about Halloween. Sure, a good dash of consumerism but not a shade of that real holiday for 80%+ of the population known at "Christmas".

I'm an atheist and I'd like to see the hijacked Saturnalia holiday get away from the excess spending. Screws with the economy for the rest of the year.

Lots of people do. There are 12 kids in my neighborhood. 3 of them are mine.

I get about 250 kids in an hour and a half. Then I turn off the outside lights... lock the door (they have been known to let themselves in) and go make dinner.

250 kids.. that is about the size of the entire elementary school. (Small town)

My house isn't all that great.. by I'm surrounded by really nice houses.. full of flatlanders...

IdleHands 2008-10-26 08:41:11 PM
Ok, we weren't driven to the wealthier neighborhoods...but once old enough the lot of us took the trek. Long, cold night...but more candy made it worth it.

Also, why does it have to be about 'going green'? Why can't it just be about saving money because it's going to be really tight this season so we all may as well enjoy it any way we can.

That happens our area. Mostly, it's that we're in a house which is near to a ton of condos. The condos won't let the kids roam around in there for Trick or Treating, so the parents drive them over to our neighbourhood and unleash them.

The end result is that we have a couple hundred kids every Halloween.

Seriously... handing out small "choking hazard"-type toys that resemble candy on a night when history and tradition have taught children to expect candy seems like an express pass to the defendant's side of the aisle.

Sure, older kids should be smart enough not to eat it, and one would hope parents are monitoring what their smaller children are eating, but that just seems like it's begging for a colossal fark-up to happen.

"A list of recommendations for Halloween and other holidays emerged: Hand out one healthy, sustainable treat; make or trade a costume; compost candy..."

Compost candy? WTF? Is there a candy surplus that is engulfing these people?

I've been faced with many dilemmas in my life, but too much candy is not one of them. I assert there is no such thing.

/hands out bushels of the stuff

Halloween is not about candy! It's about Pagans/Wiccans/Witches/Satan-worshippers celebrating the Devil's Night/Black Sabbath/Tree Solstice in the name of Mano/Yah/Moon Goddess/Harvest God/Great Pumpkin so that the Pagans/Wiccans/Witches/Satan-worshippers can be merry/love eachother/worship nature/drink blood/raise the dead and then blessed be/she walks/he's among us/Wiccans-dont-know-what-to-say-because-their-religion-was-a-1947-tax-scam.

Halloween is for women to dress like hookers and call it a costume. Thank you for that.

Or for goth kids to wear a pentagram in public because they're confused and mad for attention from the public at large and their christian parents. Not so much a thank you there.

You want to take it away from the market? Bring it back to Samhain... not back to cheap costumes and pencils instead of candy. You're still buying shiat.

cryinoutloud [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 09:43:53 PM
"Unlikely" is right. People think they're rejecting consumerism if they don't completely max out their credit cards during the holidays.

Cerebral Ballsy: Who the hell drives their brats to rich neighborhoods to get the "best" candy?

The cool parents, that's who.

Those 'cool parents' are doing it wrong. Poor people always have the best candy. The rich son of a biatches always hand out pencils, quarters, boxes of raisins, ect. One cheap skate even gave us candy canes from the year before! The dentist where I grew up gave out tooth brushes. We only went to his house once. In fact we only trick or treated in the rich part of town once. The poorer folks are the ones who go all out to give you good candy and turn their yards in to cemeteries. They also come to the door to give you the candy rather than leave it in a bowl on the porch.

Ben has a friend whose brothers are much younger and he took them out trick or treating one year. In the rich neighbor hood. It pissed him off to no end that they were to lazy to even come to the door and see the kids but rather leave a bowl of candy out side. Long story short some rich dude is missing a huge ceramic bowl that sits in the kitchen floor for the kitties to drink out off.
