At least it's more humane than a 43rd trimester abortion.

Omaha is such a shiathole of a town, I'm not surprised they put a law like this on the books without thinking it through very thoroughly. Just my opinion of course, but I've been more than once for some college baseball in the past. If it wasn't for Rosenblatt Stadium, I don't know why anyone would stop.

Bathia_Mapes [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 05:14:20 PM
I guess they haven't changed the Safe Haven law yet. They're supposed to be changing it so that the child can't be any older than 3 days. Frankly I think the limit should be 30 days, but what do I know?

baka-san [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 05:28:42 PM
Another example of "lests rush this law into effect, we haven't thought it out, but it will give us votes..."

In you can also drop off infants at police stations and some stores.

Frankly, I like it the way it is. Better to have the courts take care of a 17-year-old than parents who don't give a damn.

Though it may indicate the coming of Ragnarok, I am in complete agreement with you, sir.

People abusing this law is almost as hilarious as it is tragic... or as tragic as it is hilarious.

This is pretty much Fark in a nutshell.

If your kid is a fifteen year old gang-banger and you can't find him, can you just show up at the hospital and sign him over to the State of Nebraska?

This. I can't figure out honestly why people think this is a problem. If some asshole wants to dump their kid, good, let them, because that kid is sure not being helped in the home :-(

Some of the kids I have seen on "The Nanny" better beware now that Mom knows what to do.

NYZooMan 2008-10-26 07:47:24 PM
I'm tired of taking care of myself and am thinking of dropping myself off in Nebraska to let someone else take care of me for a while.

I don't see calling the Mom a dumbass when clearly her first interest was making sure her kid was taken care of.

I feel sorry for a parent who must be in such distress that they feel this is their only option.

Why would they want to fix the safe haven law? They'll be able to repopulate Nebraska! And maybe get another electoral vote or two.

Mentat [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 07:51:59 PM
On the plus side, this law will do wonders for Huskers football recruiting.

Now that's a damn good point! How desperate a parent must you be to

a. driuve so far to make sure your child is safe

b. be so desperate you want to give your child up

Kids, behave. Seriously. Nebraska can't take any more kids. They're full up.

I'm not sure what article you're reading, the kid was dropped off in the shiathole Lincoln.

Now I'm no way shape or forum a native to Omaha, but I'll defend its non-shiathole status to the death. Living in Omaha for over a year, I didn't get to experience its full finesse. There is a lot to Omaha that people overlook. I'd rahter live there then in Wichita, but that's another story for another day as to why I'm in the shiathole Wichita.

/Omaha needs a fark party, ASAP

gripdamage 2008-10-26 08:06:44 PM
BTW in all the hysteria about every single case, let's go ahead and mention that the total number of cases involving kids more than one year in age is 18. Advocates of the law said that the only people who would use it were those who really needed to, and this really proves them wrong, but not in the way the media would have you believe. Only 18 kids shows that not nearly all the parents who can't take care of their kids are taking advantage of the new law (even with it's coming expiration).

FormlessOne 2008-10-26 08:06:49 PM

If only they could trade their kids on the open market, in return for a full vocational education and their freedom once they come of age, for hard currency.

Indentured servitude: it's faaaaan-tastic.

I agree. Further, it's about time that we as a society admit that parenting often sucks, and kids are a giant pain in the ass.

Bathia_Mapes: Frankly I think the limit should be 30 days, but what do I know?

30 days is still too short, colic and tears (the parents') don't peak until after well that. I think it should be at least 12 months. What is the purpose of the law after all? A magical three day cut-off does no one any good.

After seeing your profile, and being in Axtell to watch my son play football, I'd have to agree with your description.

Brisketeer 2008-10-26 08:34:26 PM
FTA: In Nebraska, most of the children dropped off have been teenagers or preteens. No infants have been dropped off.

Just like with puppies and kittens, they start out cute, then mature into something much less fun.

I got the RW spin already. Why would someone who couldn't afford to have a kid in the first place put themselves in this situation?

jmayson 2008-10-26 08:37:40 PM
Don't worry Georgia. Some white-trash from Palm Bay, Florida will abandon their horde as soon as

1.) They find a car that can make it that far and back.
2.) Figure out where Nebraska is.
3.) Realize they don't need a passport to go there.

And having to pay child support.

In Maine you can dump the kid with DHS. But they are going to make you pay for the privalage. If they get dumped in Nebraska no one pays except the Nebraska taxpayers.

I still think the 3 day limit is wrong though. Should be 3 months. At 3 days everyone is still entranced with the little baby doll. By 3 months the kids have figured out that playing house isn't as fun as they thought it would be. That is when the abuse starts.
