buzzvert: How is that sad? That cat lived a long life.

13 doesn't seem that old for a cat. A 15 and 19 year old cat own me.

It's sad because it's a reminder how typically animals are much more caring, loving and noble creatures that most people.

13 was a good lifespan for a cat who started out as a stray and went through what she did. But she had a caring loving family, and lived out the majority of her years in a happy home.

Lucky says if this story doesn't make you a little sad, he will bite you with the teeth he has left while you sleep. He's 18, that's about as much confrontation as he can stand anymore... ;)

I seem to remember reading somewhere (probably linked here on fark) about a housecat who was over 30. My oldest cat is 17, still trying to get it a driver's license. The state is being a biatch about it, but I've got my lawyers working on it.

Juliekins 2008-10-26 02:47:35 PM
Aww, good kitty. I'd say 13 is a nice long life for a cat that went through what she did.

Oh, come on. Saving your own is instinctual, but would a cat brave a burning building for a stranger or another species? I would guess, at the very least, 1/4 of all people would.

I remember the story of Scarlett the cat, her poor burned face and her little kittens she rescued. One of those stories that makes you sniff back a tear

Scarlet was such an inspiring, amazing cat. Good kitty. I hope she's getting a snuzzle, some cream and some nip on the other side. I don't believe in an afterlife, but I pretend really really hard when I read stories like this.

i am glad that i haven't been drinking yet or this would probably really make me sad. my older brother bought my mom the book about this. feels almost like losing one of your own.

Did you not see the story from yesterday about the dog who went back into a burning building for a litter of kittens? Or ever hear about all the different types of animals that will "adopt" babies of other species? Hell, there are tons of people who won't even take care of their own damn children under normal circumstances.

But to be fair, bad human parents don't usually eat their children. You're ascribing complex human emotions to animals- whose only emotion consists of caring for themselves and their offspring. The dog risked it's life for something it saw as part of the pack. It's a sad story, and I love my cat to death, but would never think of it as better than a person.

"The Scarlett Room is a fun and informative place where you can stay abreast on all the animals in the Sponsor Program - both cats and dogs - learn about their lives, their medical conditions, and perhaps share in their experiences."

This page is terribly depressing, despite the description.

I don't know your cat, but I still like him/her better than Hitler, Jeffrey Dahmer, pedophiles, etc..... Animals really only harm others out of necessity (defending territory, offspring, food, etc). Humans usually do it for greed, out of anger, and sometimes just beause they like hurting others.

My cat died at 23, probably because I never bought it alcohol for its 21st.

Well if you narrow it down to monstrous people, I'd probably agree. And animals do everything out of necessity or instinct, which removes them from both blame and heroism. People can be despicable, but they have the ability to be many things. And most choose to be somewhat less than evil. (except on the internet)

While I do agree with you Solchie, some predator animals are not above "toying" with a prey animal, and either letting it go, or killing it and not eating it (or at least not much of it) Have heard many stories about killer whales spending hours seperating a California Grey Whale calf from it't mother, only to toy with it for a while, and then only eat the tongue, leaving the rest to go. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples in the various animal documentaries out there.

Still like my cat better than some people.

You've never seen a housecat who has no worries about its next meal toying with a mouse, or bird, or bug. I've seen a cat spend two hours torturing a Palmetto bug (I was ok with this).

Solchie: . Animals really only harm others out of necessity (defending territory, offspring, food, etc).

that is so incorrect and naive that it's almost cute. humans are animals. our behavior did not spring, fully formed, from us. every animal species that supports enough neurons to do so exhibits what can only be considered deliberate cruelty on a regular basis.

*sniff* for the kitty....

...but on the topic of animals killing for 'fun' we used to have a dog (one of six at the time) who would catch a gopher on the property, then bite it to break its back and keep it around all day, unable to use its hind legs it was held captive and allowed to crawl a little bit away before being brought back and licked and cuddled then tossed about a bit....

Sick farking dog.

IMO, in animals, personality is what they display when their stomach is full. The scrabble for existence doesn't give wild animals much chance to be quirky. And even they still often show personality. It's not so much that we ascribe complex emotions to animals, it's that domestic animals become "like us" for the same reasons we became "like us" - we moved in out of the cold and started eating regularly and acquired some leisure time.

While the cold, biatchy, logical part of me thinks that she was just toying with it so she could eat it later, I still teared up at the apparent display of affection. Thanks for sharing this! *sniffle*

hollyhk 2008-10-26 05:31:30 PM
Cats and other animals sometimes toy with other animals, hurting them, for up to two hours before either eating them or moving on? Yeah that's way worse than anything people do ever.

Most people are the worst of all animals. Some people are the best.
