WATERLOO, Iowa - Republican John McCain on Sunday dismissed the sour poll numbers that show him trailing in his White House race against Democrat Barack Obama and said his campaign is "doing fine."

Damn...that just cracks me up.

I feel sorry for the guy. While never exactly being a fanboy, I liked the guy. Then he went full retard (starting with schmoozing up to the agents of intolerance he so rightly criticized) and the retard has just continued to snowball.

I once admired him, and thought of him as a tough SOB. Now, he seems like an old, confused, grandfatherly SOB, hence, I've gone from admiring, to reviling, to pitying McCain...I don't think this McCain's campaign reflects the guy he is (was?), but he's top dog and he hired the pundits/consultants/lobbyists that run his campaign, and seems to be playing their game willingly, so I'm not sure he deserves even my pity. (I CANNOT WAIT for the post-mortem insider accounts to come out - as obviously farked up as the campaign is, it's only the tip of the iceberg I'm sure).

QFT. But you know, what else could he possibly say at this point? It's easy to watch his demeanor and read between the lines, but he can't flat out say, 'OK, we're not going to win and we know it.' He has to try to remain optimistic and keep his head high until it's all over. I used to like the guy a decade ago and I do feel sorry for him. This is his last hurrah and I'm sure it's going to haunt him for the rest of his life that he blew this election by pandering to the extreme right.

I'm still saying that they're keep going to repeat this whole "this election is close" thing, despite the fact that all the polls indicate the opposite, because they have some kind of shenanigans in place for election night.

The Republicans will not go quietly into the night.

vanettej 2008-10-26 03:46:00 PM
Every time I hear a Republican talking head say the election is close, I'm reminded of a friend of mine, a diehard Lions fan who still thinks they can make it to the Super Bowl this year.

It's not quite the same, though, because the Lions haven't tried every dirty trick in the book to throw the game in their direction. Yet.

I'd give McCain's odds of winning this election at about the same as Obama's odds of breaking 400 electoral votes.

(barring some secret vote tampering/election fraud scheme that McCain is planning that we don't know about....)

I wouldn't go quite that far... Obama would need to flip Montana/North Dakota and Georgia (or, alternatively, Texas) to break 400, according to the polls at 538. McCain would need to flip every state Obama already has (NM, NV, CO, IA, OH, FL, NC, VA, and possibly IN, if you'd call that flipped) to win.

jebusfreak [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 03:59:55 PM
The so-called "battlegrounds" that McCain claims to be doing well in are Georgia, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and West Virginia...

If even one of these states were in play this election, that should have signaled the end of his campaign.

Sulfus 2008-10-26 04:01:53 PM
Donald_McRonald: Nothing to see here, move along.

Interesting. If you discount the polling of the Republican convention, all other polling since then seems like a continuation of the polling done during and after the Democratic convention. Obama's numbers continue to rise, while McCain's numbers are flat, maybe even slightly declining.

The Republican convention was just a small thorn in Obama's side.

The right wing media (notably Drudge and Fox) has been pushing the "the election is very, very close" message for weeks now . If they want to pull off a McCain victory, they have a lot of "evidence" to point to. "Hey, we told you it was close, but you only listened to the polls you liked."

I'm not saying the election is/will be fixed, just that I'm not discounting a sickening surprise on Nov 4th.

I hope he 1) loses, and that 2) he swings back to his former stances on many issues in about six months.

[took pysch class once] He had the slander attacks on his daughter and wife in South Carolina 2000, and an cancer operation in August of that year. Maybe the combination of the two created this swing to the right and lack of awareness of how he was tearing down everything he built up. And now a defeat would wake him out of that slumber. THIS, unfortunately

The 2000 McCain would have given Barack MORE than a run for his money with me. In fact McCain 2000 has the distinction of being the only campaign I have donated to. Being as I knew a lot about him then, the way he's completely sold his soul to the campaign advisors who kicked his ass in 2000 is pretty apparent to me. That right there...assuming the tactics that beat him in 2000 would beat Barack (or whoever) in 2008 has brought his downfall. It is amazing that he witnessed spectacular downfall of Bush II yet assumed the American people would not see him using the MO of Bush, or not penalize him for it. Amazingly obtuse.

This is what I am terrified of...PES (f.k.a. Diebold) can most definitely pull a fast one in some states, which, along with voter roll purges and voter suppression, could be enough to squeak out a "victory" for McCain. I know I will have a hard time sleeping on Nov. 4, no matter how far ahead Obama seems at bedtime.

I'm worried too. The United States should never have gone full retard in 2004. It makes it seem, although HIGHLY improbable, possible that American voters really are that farking insane.
