Dogs think of everyone in the house as part of their family and will fight and die for any one of them. Cats think of everyone in the house as potential sources of food and will refrain from eating you only so long as you provide it from another source.

Hence when an old cat-lady dies, there is nothing left of her face when the coroner gets there.

If it the other way around, the cat wouldn't have stayed with a litter of puppies, it would have left them behind. Although the cat may have gone back into the burning building if it thought it heard a can opener opening some cat food.

It makes me wonder:

Where the hell was the cat in all this if there was a litter of kittens?

Setting the fire?

I don't know if I see "hero" in waiting in the house to die with the kittens. If he had actually SAVED them, then that would be hero.

We are fostering a mother cat and her six kittens, plus five more that my husband found at work. Their feral mother moved two but left the other five because she was so spooked by the construction machinery. Our foster cat adopted the additional kittens as her own.

Anyway, they are now five weeks and three weeks old respectively. The older kittens get to spend time out loose in the house. Our border collie watches over them like they are his own infant children. He is particularly attentive to the runt of the litter. Not one of the kittens is afraid of him or the other dogs, and the mother cat expresses absolutely no alarm at these big dogs hanging out with her kids.

Here's Gianni:

Yes, the dog totally understood the concept of a house burning down, and that safety was only outside the door. All he had to do was carry each kitten out one by one. He wasn't standing there guarding them loyally from an unknown danger, but being lazy.

I'm not worried. We had a thirteen year old foster cat who suffered a stroke. The vet did not want to euthanize her, even though she'd gone blind and was accordingly agitated. Gianni and my other border collie positioned themselves in front of her so that no matter where she went, she did not bump into anything hard like a wall or furniture. Eventually she had another stroke, and the vet saw things our way, but until that happened, our dogs babysat that poor old cat.

Border collies work very hard to keep their flock together.

More likely it's just a border collies incredible urge to herd other animals. My sister has a pair of them and they have herded, at different times, ducks, cats, frogs, other dogs, and neighborhood children.

Article starts off "Sydney", then says it occurred in Melbourne. Only about a 10 hour drive away.

Again, dogs prove their worth. Cats too.

JayHawkWDS [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 02:30:13 PM
I was thinking the same thing CarrieWhite. Sydney people don't like Melbourne people, and vise versa. Kind of Australia's version of New York vs Los Angeles.

Agree with atomic-age , Border Collies are awesome. My sister has a border collie mix (with what we're not sure, but probably terrier of some sort) that is the most awesome dog of all time. She's really cute during family sleep overs we have during the holidays, she will spend all night going to each person sleeping and makes sure she spends a little time with everyone.

Very cool little terrier there in the story, deserves a great big steak!

and since I have both, I am all for both dogday and caturday. I am also un-opposed to bunday.

Cats are smarter than dogs, you can't get 12 cats to pull a sled. Still, whos a good boy? You're a good boy! A cutie hero puppy. Yes you are! Yes you are! Come have a bone.

YelpinFarkette 2008-10-26 06:09:14 PM
Um, the dog didn't rescue the kittens. He was just with them. That's loyalty, or whatever. But it's also stupidity and not heroism.

SpiderQueenDemon 2008-10-26 07:21:58 PM
Dogs, in my experience, will frequently raise orphaned anything. My cat Alexei was brought up as a small kitten by a Great Dane/Shar-pei mix named Duke and still has many dogly habits taught by his foster dad.

Leo deserves many delicious treats and his own soft bed.

Rockstone 2008-10-26 09:44:20 PM
My Dog/rat would laugh, my other dog would be too scared to help. My cat would probably end up saving both of them.
