Girls aged 15-17 not wearing seatbelts? And they died you say? Good riddance to stupid people. I'm 26 and even when I was a kid [omg like totally so long ago, teehee] it was a frowned upon to not wear a seatbelt. There is no excuse for their poor decision making.

That and I like how the article is started as "the tragedy of the cheerleaders killed [mumble mumble] and some other non-cheerleader type person in the car they hit."

Anyone else believe the crash was caused by giving 4 teenage cheerleaders an SUV?

politica 2008-10-26 09:52:47 AM
because the girls were not wearing belts the driver (lived and had a seatbelt on), might be charged with man slaughter, people under 18 that are passengers in tennessee, become the responsibility of the driver and he will incur all fines... this is true even if the driver is under 18, law was put in the books when i was 17. also they had what 6 people and an infant in the car... and why in the world if your pregnant dont you wear a belt..

4 dead teenage girls, 1 dead woman, 1 dead fetus, 1 serioulsy injured pregnant woman, 1 injured child, 1 injured guy. TFA implies most of the cheerleaders burned to death. A small community is grieving. Families are burying the mangled bodies of their loved ones. Those who survived and witnessed this will bear the psychological scars for the rest of their lives.

Yet, this horrifying event has resulted in some good. It has found its way to fark.com and been offered to the public as comedy. Some fark.com members have associated some of the words and context from the original, tragic article and posted lines from what was once an marginally popular song from a band called the Butthole Surfers.

Now, I'm going to leave this thread and listen to the Butthole Surfers, a band which is friggin awesome and I haven't listened to in years. So thank you, dead, injured, and suffering people. You have inadvertently made me happy!

eliasvict: Why wasn't the 39-year old driving?

scrumpox 2008-10-26 10:01:12 AM
If my sister were one of the cheerleaders, I would be saddened by the loss of a loved one. Of course, I'd also be really confused as to why my 36-year-old, mom-of-two sister was a) still in high school and b) a cheerleader. And I would be incredibly embarrassed that she would be stupid enough to ride w/o a seatbelt.

The way you deal with tragedy is to make it humorous. I deal with tragedy by thinking about what happened and how that affects my thought process. I don't feel the need to immediately mask my sadness and fear with jokes. Having said that, I honestly was not being sarcastic with my previous post. I was just thinking out loud about how this tragic event led to me currently listening to the Butthole Surfers, a band I really like but haven't thought about in a long time. I probably should have been more obvious about that. It was a thought, not a thread commentary.

So did I, and I was coming to say that they SUCK. So now I had to say it.

Seriously sad story though. But good headline, if only for the balls it took to be so inappropriate about such a sad event.

The Laughing Kookaburra: eliasvict: Why wasn't the 39-year old driving?

The article is poorly structured, but from what I can see the four teens were alone in their car. The 49 year old and others were in the car the teens slammed into. I came to this conclusion because the last names of the 49 year old and 22 year old are the same as the people in the other car hit.

vicejay [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 10:19:27 AM
A good samaritan probably saved a life or two:

McPherson said investigators believe passengers were still trapped inside the second vehicle when the SUV caught fire a few feet away. A passing motorist used an all-terrain vehicle to pull the Taurus away from the burning SUV, she said.

Difference being of course, that this was an accident. We are never going to be so insulated from the world around us that there is no chance of our enviroment killing us. Even if we could, where's the fun in that?
