If you own a Chinese restaurant, it's never a good idea to let the health inspector find employees butchering a deer in theanywhere near your kitchen.

FTFY, subby.

I have no idea why, but I died laughing at that headline. Just the mental image of a group of Chinese people in cook outfits wresting a deer while they kill it, and the health inspector walks in, and everyone just freezes, staring at each other. That's a classic sitcom moment.

Last year a couple of guys got pulled over here because their car matched the description of one that was reported to be firing weapons. Sure enough, upon checking the officer found two high powered pellet guns. In addition, they found a pile of freshly dead rabbits in the car. When questioned, the guys admitted driving around and shooting the rabbits. Why? Because they both worked at a local Chinese restaurant and were instructed to do it. To my dismay, the article in the paper did not mention the particular restaurant in question.

I guess if they had dressed it outside I'd pay more for some nice fresh venison than crappy standard "chinese" food.

They're simply trying to out Fresh the competitors.

submitter: If you own a Chinese restaurant, it's never a good idea to let the health inspector find employees butchering a deer in the kitchen

FTFA: "In general, you can't have a dead animal in a food services establishment,"

Why not? This is farking retarded. Why should a commercial kitchen be unable to dress its own game meat?

Also, venison is tasty!

LaChanz [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 06:40:57 AM
There are rumors that one of the local Chinese restaurants in my area will pay about 2 bucks a pound for yellow perch, which is a trash fish in my area.(If we catch them we usually throw them in the woods or on the ice in the winter.)

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 07:37:05 AM
Would they rather they'd do it in the john? At least it wasn't a cat.

FTA: "In general, you can't have a dead animal in a food services establishment"

So basically, they would have been OK to just cook it alive then, right?

mtylerjr 2008-10-26 07:42:37 AM
This would not be an issue in Montana

we have bunches of Chinese restaurants in town. almost as popular as chicken wings here. Nobody is gonna starve around here.

On a road trip across Wisconsin in 1983, we were stopping in every little bar we could find. Walked into one and started talking to the owner about what he was working on down at the end of the bar. Turned out to be a dear he was butchering...ON THE BAR...

I drank my beer with a straw. didn't want to touch the glass.

castufari 2008-10-26 07:58:02 AM
And-1: Why should a commercial kitchen be unable to dress its own game meat?

It's not prepped for it. Too many ways to contaminate the surfaces with whatever the deer is carrying. When I worked for a resort hotel we had a guy bring in a few rabbits for cleaning. He put them up on one of the prep tables...head chef walked in and blew a gasket. That kitchen was closed and cleaned top to bottom.

Yeah, that's too bad, rabbiatchinese style can be very tasty. I am in China and just had a big banquet yesterday. I got served rabbit, bullfrog, pigeon, duck-necks and fishhead soup just to name a few, aside from some regular dishes. I have been in China for a year and half year, and have been sick from the food only once. And the variety and quality of food here is just simply amazing, Chinese restaurant food in the West simply cannot compare to the amazing variety and diversity of regional cuisines here. And if you are in a big city like I am, you have access to an amazing amount of restaurants.

Sometimes indeed they take it a bit too far with the "exotic" things; weirdest thing I have eaten so far was deep fried cicada

Cornwell [TotalFark] 2008-10-26 08:06:57 AM
I really don't see the issue here. There are pieces of dead animals in there all the time. You might almost go as far as to suggest that one of the main purpose of restaurants, is to contain pieces of dead animal.

Slaughtering a deer in the kitchen? It only means that the venison is fresh when served.

FTA "What were they going to do with the meat?" Billittier wondered. "I don't think we'll ever really know the answer to that."

Seriously? What possible thing could the workers of a restaurant end up doing with the meat from an animal they are butchering in the restaurant's kitchen. Truly perplexing.

Next up police officers unsure what mechanics were going to do with stolen car parts.

DrBrownCow 2008-10-26 08:34:06 AM
Yep, game animals can be dirty and carry all sorts of parasites, diseases, etc. Especially when you don't know its origin.

(I had newly immigrated Chinese neighbors while growing up. The dad was a chef back in China. They got their hands on some weird stuff, and invited us over for dinner often. I remember cleaning some fish one day and the dad came over for the heads and tails.)

betona 2008-10-26 08:44:54 AM
Deer, I wouldn't worry so much about. It's the dog meat I fear.

moof 2008-10-26 08:47:56 AM
Meh. At least this restaurant is using fresh meat! And no cat or dog.. (Though tasty, some may have ethical concerns about eating cat or dog, even though it saves a bundle in burial costs)

I bet they get a whole lot of new customers when they reopen, if only from people going to eat there on a deer. On a dare.

In Bangkok's Chinese restaurants, dog is often listed on menus as "Local Deer".
So, it could have been worse.

I once saw two Chinese guys loading a roadkill deer into the trunk of their car.

UnFark 2008-10-26 09:24:04 AM
It's a trend in high-end NYC restaurants for them to do their own butchering. I'm guessing the white folks aren't getting shut down.

Officials don't know whether the dead deer at China King, 5999 South Park Ave., had been hunted or if it was road kill.

Authorities should be on the look out for Chinese guys driving bulldozers on rural roads.

A health inspector was quickly sent to the restaurant and saw the dead deer being butchered. The inspector also discovered a cooling unit at the restaurant was not at the proper temperature.

I bet they left the scoop in the ice machine too.

twfeline 2008-10-26 09:49:23 AM
Fleas. Ticks. Intestinal parasites. Intestinal bacteria. Fecal bacteria. Viruses. Maybe even rabies. The list is longer than I can imagine.

If my restaurant is doing its own buthering, I'm hoping that they are doing it in a shed out back, and they have lots of soap and running water out there to hose the place down with, both before and after.
